I have used a pair of these Audio Technica ATH-M40fs headphones in my project studio for about four years now. They have an extremely flat response curve and I find that I can get a mix in the ballpark using these and then use nearfields for final tweaks and adjustments. I also use them for tracking and find that they work well as an all-around headphone set in the studio. The cables are truly field replaceable. I have stepped on the cable two different times while moving quickly around my studio in such a way that the cord received an extremely sudden tug that would have broken any cable. On both occasions I called Audio Technica and for a relatively nominal fee they sent me replacement cables that were easy to install. I would recommend these to anyone looking for a mid-level pair of all-around studio headphones.

I bought these 'phones to use when I needed to listen to a temporary mix while recording. While the frequency response curve is somewhat flat, there is a characteristic to the sound that I don't like.

The sound is boxy, with a touch of plastic. In other words, I don't hear the openness I do when the same tune is played through my Focal monitors, my Altec-Lansing loud speakers or even my car. There is a characteristic to the mid-frequencies that resonate with too much presence.

They'll do for evaluating intermediate mixes while recording, though.

I love these cans!!

By Ray Merriman

from Atlanta GA

I've been recording for over 30 years, and these are, by far, the best flat/monitor, headphones for the price. I often use these for final mixes. Then take it to the monitors. The phones are surprisingly close. And, they are nice and punchy if you like, with very little, if not at all, noticeable distortion at every level.

Sound is IMPORTANT!

By Soundtrack to Schitzophrenia

from Reno, NV

Amazing headphones! I didn't want to spend excesses of $100+ for a set of headphones. I tried several lower prices brands and found these to deliver more punch and sonic goodness where others fail. Every nuance of each instrument can be heard with amazing clarity...be it yourself jamming or listening to a CD. The price tag is excellent for the quality of Sound. If your like me, sound is EVERYTHING! Get these headphones ASAP!

Seriously, why wouldn't you get these?

By Robert B.

from Austin, TX

These aren't the best headphones I've ever worn, but for that price they're the best go-to 'phones I've ever owned. For nuanced, detailed collaborative work where playing over the monitors is not an option, it's good to have a pair of these (or two) on hand.

Good All Around Headphones

By iastateN8

from Austin, TX

These are good all purpose headphones for the money. I have used then for both tracking and mixing and they do work fairly well for both. Their flat response makes them a little unexciting. This should be noted especially when tracking since if you want the best performance you want your headphones to have an exciting mix in them. With mixing I more use them as another listening too. On detail they really can?t compare to some good near field monitors, but what do you expect!

My Review

By Chevy

from ATL

I am thoroughly pleased with these phones. They're well-constructed, comfortable and sit completely on top of your ears as advertised, they drown out nearly everything outside of the headphones! The one gripe, though its a minor one, is that I wish AT had a locking mechanism on the swivels for the ear cups. They don't, so, it may or may not annoy you a bit, but its a small con in the scheme of things. They provide a good clean sound, not too much bass, that you'll be able to mix your music off of or just jam out with! The gold plated 1/4" jack is great as most phones don't come stock with one!

Flat response headphones are the way to go

By Daniel

from Duluth, MN

wow I like these!! I didn't buy them for studio mixing or DJ use I just bought these to plug into my Line 6 Spider III 30W amp so I could play without disturbing anyone. If I wanted to hear my amp sound good I would have to have it up so loud that the neighors down the street would hear me. These phones allow me to hear my guitar amped the way I want but silent. I play with alot of distortion so if you do too beware dont blow your ears out with these things. Again I really like the flat frequency curve these are reported to have so you can plug into your stereo and hear your CDs, records, tapes!? exactly as it was recorded and intended to be heard. I am far from an expert but true sound is important to me and I think I bought the right phones. If you like bass boost these are not for you buy some dynamic phones.

Best Uses

i am a big music freak and since my computer is in my dining room often times i can't listen to my music using my actual speakers. these headphones are great. so far, i have had no problems. the audio sounds great and captures all ranges really well. the cable has a generous amount of length so i can go to the far end of my desk without removing my headphones which is a plus for me. one reminder if you are looking to get these is that they are using a 1/4 inch connector so if you want to use them for your computer or ipod(which is not what they were meant for being studio headphones) then you will need to get an adapter. luckily adapters are cheap and easily findable at radioshack or online. also be sure to check that you have a 1/4 inch port on your computer because that is not common on generic computers and you might need to get a sound card that supports it. for me i use the audigy sound blaster 2zs. my only complaint is that they are uncomfortable for extended periods of time but that might just be me since i often wear them for a few hours on end. in the end these are definitely a good buy if you enjoy listening to high-quality music on your computer or in a studio.

one last reminder is that these are NOT casual listening headphones. they are studio headphones meaning that they aren't notably portable and rugged, they are for people who sit down at a computer. so don't use these in the rain while you are at a sports game or something! if you want something that is a little more suited for traveling around then use the audiotechnica ath m35's because those fold and have a 3.5 mm adapter for ipods as well as good studio funcion too.

I have lots of head phones that I use and these are some of the best. I only paid about $60 brand new and they work great. If you need phones for tracking or light mixing these will work great. I find them a little "bassier" than my studio monitors and have to tweek my mixes if I use them before the monitors, but having said that for $60 you just can't beat them. They are also very strong and hold up well to road travels.
