Dont get me wrong, it is a great all around condenser/cardiod, but for some reason it sounded particularly better for lower frequency vocals. Of course for its price and class it gets the job done flawlessly. Nice, accurate sound.

The build quality of this microphone seems very sturdy and solid.

For sound quality, on the good side, this microphone works very well for high pitched instruments / bright formants. It adds more body to the lows and helps high instruments have more dynamic range. If you were just recording high pitched sources, then this is a great option.

On the down side, this microphone does not handle low instruments / low formants at all. That low boost it gives will ruin the sound for low instruments. It's rough sounding and adjusting the microphone angle doesn't seem to help anything.

So in all, this microphone is good for certain applications but definitely not low pitched sources.

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4040 Large-Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

Product is amazing for this price. Well thought out. Great for voiceovers and recording. I am a live streamer on Twitch and I use this as my daily driver for my weekly streams. I have never had a problem with it. Bass is great, and all other sound sounds crisp and clear. A LOT better than my previous, clip-on mic. Top of the line for under $500 - $800 I would say

I use this often with a shield as while a cardioid mic easy to get bleed over and cause feedback. But really works well for choirs or large singing groups.

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4040 Large-Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

I have tried out the AKG C214, AKG P220, AKG P420, AKG C3000, RODE NT1-A and the Audio-Technica 4040 microphone. The AT4040 is by far the best of the bunch. With a flat response and transparent sound across the board this microphone is a graet choice for vocals and acoustic guitar tracks. I would highly advise this well built and sturdy unit from Audio-Technica.

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4040 Large-Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

This has become my favorite mic in it's price range, for sure. I started using this for vocals and haven't looked back. The response is very crispy, a great high-mid responsiveness and it's high-end is a makes it sound just the perfect amount of airy. If you don't like that, you can always dial back the the highs using an EQ. All-in-all it makes a great vocals vocal mic. If you get a pair, it makes for a great spaced pair set for the drums or even piano. It captures the low-end nicely, as well. Versatile mic. Recommend for any studio.

Flat response, multi-purpose cardiod pattern mic

          By DAVID

          from Brooklyn, NY

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4040 Large-Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

Best used as a close-source instrument mic (acoustic guitar, piano, voice) It has a generally flat response that makes it handy for a wide variety of tasks. There are switches for a -10dB pad and high pass filter which could come in handy when capturing high SPL sources or to clean up mud. It is a massive step up in quality from the bargain condensers so if you're looking for an upgrade from one of those, you will not be disappointed. That being said, $100 more will get you the AT4033, which is, in my opinion, the best bang for your buck condenser on the market today.

with my voice I need all te help I can get, and this mic is just right! Hearing myself clearly while singing and keeping my true vocal tone intact, for me, is not easy, I suck at studio singing!! This mic makes it work for me. I can just sing and not think, and not worry about how I am hitting notes, and the clarity and responsiveness of the mic does the rest!

                Fantastic Quality and Personality

                By Michael Pearce

                from St. Louis, Missouri

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4040 Large-Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

I love this mic! As with other microphones in Audio-Technica's 40 series, this microphone is very sensitive and has very low noise. It has a frequency response curve that gives it a beautiful personality for vocals, both male and female. This is also my favorite mic to use for voice overs and narration on film and video projects. This microphone costs much less than the AT4050, and in my opinion it is a much better value. Multiple polar patterns are just not that useful, at least not for studio vocals. Heavy, durable construction (for a condenser). Includes a shock mount that works. Sadly, the case doesn't hold the mount.

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4040 Large-Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

My first mic was a 1999 ADK A-51. As much as I liked the sound (and still do), I purchased my AT-4040 from GC in 2007. It has since become the workhorse for my recoding. I continue to use the A-51 in my secondary studio, but the studio that I spend the most time in, houses my 4040. No selectable pattern, but the low cut filter and -10db option makes it a great buy.
