Far Exceeds expectations

When first told about the Audio Technica ATH-M50, I had to order simply to see if a pair of headphones were truly of this quality and clarity. However, I was not surprised to find the descriptions from friends and colleagues such as Master Recording Engineer Bruce Hensal, and comments from Bob Clearmountain, accurate. You can mix on these!!@ A worthwhile investment for any studio or project studio. The performances far exceeds the very affordable price tag.

I can finally hear it!

I never thought that I would enjoy mixing and mastering on a pair of headphones. Never has a pair of headphones given me the response that my studio monitors give me. But, the ATH-50 headphones have made me enjoy listening to music on headphones again. And, I can actually mix and master my own recordings using these. I can finally hear the attack in the kick and its separation from the bass on a pair of headphones. Awesome.

The Headphones to get.... PERIOD!

I've owned this particular set of headphones for over a year now. I bought these with the expectation of being able to construct quality mixes that would compare closely to near-field monitors. At the time of purchase I was working with a less than desirable set of near-fields due to my budget, and needed something of much better sound quality. With the price of a decent set of monitors being way out of my range, I opted for a nice, professional set of phones to get by. After owning a pair of M30's for a few years and being pleased with the sound quality and isolation, I figured I'd give the M50's a shot. The price to me seemed a bit steep, and probably does to some others, but I have to say... these are the phones to get! Hands-down! Completely blew the M30's out of the water! They are extremely accurate, clean, crisp, and have very nice bass response. I never thought it was possible to mix so well on headphones. You're going to hear so much more in your mixes that it's almost ridiculous. The cups are nice, big and super comfortable, though they do tend to get a bit heavy after several hours. The ONLY problem I've had with this pair was because of my earrings. I had 7/8" plugs when I bought them and they didn't quite fit comfortably, so I had to sacrifice them (Small price to pay for an accurate mix). The isolation is amazing! They almost completely silence the drum kit while tracking. After using them for close to a year to monitor all my mixes I was finally able to buy a pair of KRK near-field monitors, and I have to say, these phones were pretty much on key. I find they do tend to color your mix slightly, so don't over EQ. But once you get accustomed to the way it reproduces the sound, your mixes will sound AMAZING! Bottom line... Buy these headphones! PEACE!

Mix with confidence

For years I've used other headphones while mixing in unfriendly situations (live shows with screaming audience members, back of a tour bus, noisy hotels rooms). Always I was second guessing myself about how my mix would translate in the "real world" and many times i've been disappointed and have had to remix several times. WELL NOT ANY MORE! The M50's are extremely accurate and have excellent rejection. My mixes now translate between my dynaudio monitor, the old faithful NS10's and my car. I now save a ton of time especially when traveling by knowing that what I'm hear is true!

Excellent Flat Response

Each year it seems another musician friend recommends upgrades to my equipment and the one I'd resisted longest was a set of high quality headphones. I finally broke down and spent the money and it has made a huge difference in the sound quality of my work. Be warned, these won't make listening to your favorite CD's or MP3's sound great, unless they already are great. That's simply because these cans don't color the sound - you get a straight out flat response, so you're hearing what is really going down. If you make the mistake of buying say the Bose Tri-Ports, well you may enjoy The Beatles' White Album a lot but you'll make mistakes in your own recording work since Bose purposely changes the sound contour to make it more pleasing. So - end of ramble - you want accurate flat response - use these. They're comfortable for long sessions, the cord length allows you to roam your studio and I even like listening to The Beatles on them. But if you're looking for cans for simple music enjoyment, you'll do better with the types that are designed to do that.
