  • The Headphones to get.... PERIOD!

As reviewed by Aaron J. Hamilton on 1/27/2009

I've owned this particular set of headphones for over a year now. I bought these with the expectation of being able to construct quality mixes that would compare closely to near-field monitors. At the time of purchase I was working with a less than desirable set of near-fields due to my budget, and needed something of much better sound quality. With the price of a decent set of monitors being way out of my range, I opted for a nice, professional set of phones to get by. After owning a pair of M30's for a few years and being pleased with the sound quality and isolation, I figured I'd give the M50's a shot. The price to me seemed a bit steep, and probably does to some others, but I have to say... these are the phones to get! Hands-down! Completely blew the M30's out of the water! They are extremely accurate, clean, crisp, and have very nice bass response. I never thought it was possible to mix so well on headphones. You're going to hear so much more in your mixes that it's almost ridiculous. The cups are nice, big and super comfortable, though they do tend to get a bit heavy after several hours. The ONLY problem I've had with this pair was because of my earrings. I had 7/8" plugs when I bought them and they didn't quite fit comfortably, so I had to sacrifice them (Small price to pay for an accurate mix). The isolation is amazing! They almost completely silence the drum kit while tracking. After using them for close to a year to monitor all my mixes I was finally able to buy a pair of KRK near-field monitors, and I have to say, these phones were pretty much on key. I find they do tend to color your mix slightly, so don't over EQ. But once you get accustomed to the way it reproduces the sound, your mixes will sound AMAZING! Bottom line... Buy these headphones! PEACE!

  • You Hear What You're Doing

As reviewed by Zelig504 on 5/15/2009

Each year it seems another musician friend recommends upgrades to my equipment and the one I'd resisted longest was a set of high quality headphones. I finally broke down and spent the money and it has made a huge difference in the sound quality of my work. Be warned, these won't make listening to your favorite CD's or MP3's sound great, unless they already are great. That's simply because these cans don't color the sound - you get a straight out flat response, so you're hearing what is really going down. If you make the mistake of buying say the Bose Tri-Ports, well you may enjoy The Beatles' White Album a lot but you'll make mistakes in your own recording work since Bose purposely changes the sound contour to make it more pleasing. So - end of ramble - you want accurate flat response - use these. They're comfortable for long sessions, the cord length allows you to roam your studio and I even like listening to The Beatles on them. But if you're looking for cans for simple music enjoyment, you'll do better with the types that are designed to do that.

  • Absolutely Fantastic.

As reviewed by Logan C. on 4/27/2009

These headphones are everything I could ever ask for and more. Cliche, yes. But true nonetheless. I use these headphones for everything nowadays. Since they come with a screw on adapter, you can use them in the studio, as well as anything that uses a 3.5mm connector, like an iPod. When I bought them, they were saying that they would drain the power from an iPod very quickly since the larger drivers need more power to function, but I haven't had any problem with that. The response is unbelievable. I can now hear things in the music that I listen to that my previous headphones didn't pick up at all, even at full volume. The bass is another highlight. Incredibly full, rich, and mind blowing. with the more heavy bass songs, the headphones visually vibrate, and the sound still stays unbelievably clear. All around, the best you can possibly get for the price. they also work well as impromptu speakers. : )
