Thoughts from a rookie

I'm just starting to do voice-overs, and this is my first experience in learning to record the best quality of sound possible. I researched many hours before choosing the AT2020 USB, and am VERY pleased. My criteria were 1) professional-level microphone, 2) simple to use, and 3) low price. This mic fit all three. Plugging directly into a computer USB port is very simple. Also, since the mic produces digital output it by-passes the sound card so there is one less piece of equipment that can affect quality. I had read about the microphone's tendency to pick up ambient noise, creating a slight "sshhhh" whisper since it is not designed to pick up only from the front of the mic. I have no experience with other top-grade mics, but I found this to be true. I'm still experimenting with the mic and the recording environment, but I believe that by creating a good recording studio, and turning the mic volume down so that I can get my mouth close to the mic without overmodulating, I get great results! Also, the slight noise is very easy to filter out with software, such as Audacity. I definitely am satisfied! The quality of this microphone - you can just feel it when you hold the mic, and it picks up the slightest sound - is far better than its price would have had me believe.

Studio Quality Without The Money

This microphone is perfect for anybody that has a home studio. It's catches a few clicks and pops but other than that the quality is unmatched. I'm able to record local bands and myself for national recording CDs and with just a few EQ adjusts, it sounds like a top dollar studio

2nd purchase, good product.

I purchased the first one to use for a quick solution to a voice over class. A laptop, the AT2020 USB, a stand w/ a pop screen, and you have a very portable vocal recording solution. It has pretty decent sound (especially for the price), and the look that helps in the training of college vocal talent. I bought a second set-up because I was so pleased.

Amazing at first, but...

... I bought the AT2020 mic in the middle of this year (2008) and used it for lots of voice-work. My number one concern is being able to do high-decibel recordings, and this one peaks after using it for half a year. I'm buying a new one by Shure because they make products that are second-to-none. Audio-Technica is good, but I would recommend either buying a higher-quality mic or not yelling loudly like I do. :)

totally not for my purposes apparently

I picked up this mic earlier today, and was told it would suit my purposes fine. First off, the mic is supposed to need to just be plugged in and it'll be recognized and you'll be all set. No such luck. After a few hours of messing with setting and trying everything under the sun, no dice. It does, for some strange reason, work on my little netbook. So oh well. I install audacity on there and give it a whirl.... what awful sound. I was planning on using it to record some practice sessions (I play trumpet), but no matter where I put the levels, where I stood in the room, or what direction I faced, the mic was overdriven. But even just speaking into it normally caused the same problem, so unless I missed something, or I'm doing something drastically wrong, this mic either broken, or the worst product ever developed. I really don't feel like going through this again, so I'll try a different brand if/when I decide to get another usb mic. I've never had this many problems with any of my recording equipment, computer based or traditional.
