Arturia's MiniLab USB Controller was designed to marry the style you love with the hands-on control and portability you need to take your studio wherever you are inspired. I bought this because I am just l learning how to use this kind of thing. I want to set up a basic home studio to record what I'm doing, and thought it would be fun to add some effects. The guy at GC was real good. I went home to do some research before I made the purchase. All though this didn't have the greatest reviews, I saw enough to make me want to start with this one. First the setup, dowloading and registering. I had some issues... I emailed Arturia support, expecting I was going to have to return this thing. In a few hours I received my answer, and it worked. I am not a key board player, but in no time I was rocking on this thing. Then I discovered one key wasn't working, dead silent..... the #12 key. Then it started freezing up, probably because I was test driving all the different sounds. Turned it off, let it sit a bit, got back on, and it was great again, and this time the key worked??? After a bit it started to freeze up, and it started to make some strange noise. Turned it off, let it sit, got back on, and I was rockinhg again, untill it happened again. It may not be the fault of the program, could be my laptop just can't hanle what I;m putting it through. I know as I learn this thing I won't have to be constantly searching for which instrument to play. Some are really good, some are ok, or very similiar to others, and some are just bad, but there are enough good ones to make me think it was worth getting. I'd suggest having a notepad near you when you play, so you can keep track of what you like. I've had it for a day and a half, and glad I bought it, so far anyway.....
I already own many MIDI controllers, but I really wanted a keyboard that could fit in my backpack, with the most features. I went back and forth between the MiniLAB, the Akai MPK Mini, and the Axiom AIR Mini 32. I spent hands on time with all of them. There are of course pros and cons with all MIDI controllers, but I wanted the best I could get for the size. MiniLAB pros: * More features than any other controller in its price range * Superior build quality in price range * Ribbon controllers are great - TIP: use your fingernail! * Regular USB jack and foot pedal switch input * Encoders instead of knobs - normally only in higher priced controllers * Analog Lab has huge library of usable sounds out of the box * Very flexible MIDI programming ability with little more to be desired MiniLAB cons: * Pads have adjustable sensitivity but don't feel as nice as Akai MPK Mini * Keys are a little hard to press, but still enjoyable to play * No serious mappings for DAWs, but at least minimal Ableton Live mapping * Certain Analog LAB presets can be CPU intensive, and act glitchy accordingly In the end, I chose the MiniLAB with no regrets. The Analog LAB software, the full size USB jack, the ribbon controllers, and the encoders really sealed the deal for me. I really like the encoders. They are very good quality for the money, with no jumping. The firmware update is imperative for good encoder results, so apply the latest update straight away. Endless encoders in general can be a pain for very quick precise movements; i.e., moving a knob swiftly from 3 o'clock to 9 o'clock and back. But they are a heaven send for using with Ableton Live, where I don't have to worry about jumping parameters from turning a knob. After having gone through 3 Novation Nocturns with horribly jumpy encoders (a bad hardware experience), I paid great attention to the encoder quality on the MiniLAB. They behave predictably without jumpiness, and in general, they feel like quality encoders that will last a while. Endless encoders on a MIDI keyboard in this price range is unprecedented, but you have to know how encoders work, how to assign them, and what relative mode to use. There are 3 relative encoder modes to choose from, and 3 knob acceleration curves. You can program the knobs to send absolute values if your software just can't handle the encoder modes for some reason. Certain people with have to have regular ending knobs or sliders no matter what, for exacting precision. I knew this going in, and I already own a nanoKontrol that can handle absolute those tasks when they're called for. This helped seal the deal for me as well for the MiniLAB. I like the ribbon controllers, but you have to press too hard with the flesh of the fingertip, and I found that using my fingernail with slight pressure gives me great instant results with both ribbons. This is a really good tip that will make the ribbons enjoyable. I am running a MacBook Pro with OS 10.6 Snow Leopard. I was disappointed to find out that Unified MIDI Control Center requires Mac OS 10.7 Lion, and that's all the product page will show you. However, I was able to find an older version here that works for Snow Leopard: http://www.arturia.com/downloads/minilab/mcc_mac_1.1.zip I have been able to program MIDI with this, and update the firmware as well. I have to admit that I really like the Akai MPK Mini pads. The saving grace for the MiniLAB was using the MIDI Control Center to make the pads more sensitive. Look for the pads button in MIDI Control Center to get to the Pad Gain Calibration page. I used MIDI Monitor for Mac (MIDI-OX can be used for Windows) to see the velocity data as I struck the pads. As soon as you hit the apply button in the pads utility, it instantly updates the hardware. A tip here, is to select the number under the first pad gain slider with the mouse, then type the number, then tab to the next, type, etc... this well make adjusting the pad sensitivities a faster chore. Some pads on my unit were more sensitive than others on a hardware level, and the pads section allows you to customize the sensitivity for each pad independently. I don't have to strike the pads with the force of a hammer to get full velocity now. Arturia calls the MiniLAB a "hybrid synth", due to the marriage with the Analog LAB software. Analog LAB sells for $89 standalone on the Arturia website, and is a huge factor in the value of this product. I personally like Analog LAB, and appreciate the library of sounds it contains. Once registered, the biggest benefit is being able to save your own versions of presets, as well as multi sound presets. Multi sounds consist of 2 regular preset sounds in tandem, with custom split keys, and 2 sends with your choice of 18 effects. You can save any preset or multi as a program change number, the first 8 of which can be recalled instantly by pressing pads 9 - 16 on the keyboard. If you own the full versions of any of the Arturia synths used in the presets, then you can use Analog LAB as a preset librarian, and edit the synth directly from the Analog LAB software. I have experienced CPU spikes on occasion with some of the presets, which makes sound glitches. I will be submitting some bug reports to Arturia if they will listen. But overall, I am satisfied with the software. When you buy the MiniLAB, make sure the box has never been opened. If it has, then make the employee give you another one. I would also open the box straight away upon purchase in the store and inspect the contents for any indication whatsoever of prior opening. This will help prevent hassles with activating your software. The MiniLAB hardware serial number is your Analog LAB software serial number. I went through 2 store boxes before getting a working serial that could be activated. This is pretty annoying, and I would recommend to Guitar Center that all MiniLAB boxes be sealed, and not available on the showroom floor for this reason. No MIDI controller is ever totally p
I purchased this keyboard because of the sofware included and for its looks, never crossed my mind that the brand could allow this kind of cheap manufacturing. From the first time it was evident that something were wrong with the keys. One of them (upper C) just "clunks", seems a bad contact or so. Then I discovered a couple of more keys with the same problem if you push it a bit harder. Another key triggered the adjacent too. The software is great but does not work with garageband 10 in the mac, only does with older versions. The brand new Arturia Mac configuration software module (midi CC) also fails unless you use the older version. They blame Apple but in their forums you can read that it is months that they have been fixing it and users complaining. I went to the GC store and they promptly exchanged the item for a new one. Guess what... it is worse than the first. Two more keys failing plus the same upper C key. So sadly am returning it today. Not funny to drive back and forth for exchanging things. Other than that it works fine, is impressively pretty and has a lot of functionality I like. Now, if it only worked as expected....
I was sceptical as to how good this would be for the price point. At the time a product review said the software was worth the 99 bucks. Well I am very happy with how well the MINILAB works. The keys and pads are great. The knobs are very good. It works great with Analog Lab ans my DAW. I have also spent some time using the included MIDI Control Center software to program my own settings and that also works very well. It is obviously not a commercial grade product but has been a great addition to my home studio.
This Keyboard is great for its value. for $100 you get a good quality keyboard AND a VST with 5,000 AMAZING sounds. The VST crashes sometimes when I try using it in FL Studio, but so far that has only happened about two times. I definitely recommend this to anyone who makes Hip Hop or RnB beats.
This may seem like a nice cheap alternative to an expensive keyboard, but it is definitely nothing that you would ever want to use live. After only a month of use the pads began to fail. Note, we don't even use the pads at all on any of our songs, the most we ever did was touch them a few times to see what they do. What started happening is that randomly a pad would turn on right in the middle of a song. you didn't even have to touch it. a simple tap to the side of the case would turn this thing on creating an extremely annoying sound. Other than that, they keys themselves are fairly low quality, more like a toy than a real instrument. The only thing good about this is the software, which i very much like, however without a well built controller the software is pretty much useless.
I went into GC with the intention of purchasing the Akai MPK Mini but the location was sold out. After some input from the salesperson I decided on the MiniLab. I had done my research on the MPK Mini but not Minilab. So I admit it's my own fault for impulse buying. Overall, the keyboard is good. Touch sensitivity is good. Octave up/down is very smooth. Works well with both AnalogLab and with my DAWs. The knobs work OK with AnalogLab (sometimes not responsive due to overflow when a key is pressed using some of the stock sequences). But the knobs are almost useless when trying to Map them from a DAW, either moving only slightly on some settings or having to turn them 2 to 3 full revolutions with jumpy results. The pitch bend and modulations.... actually as far as ribbon controllers go, they're quite good. But personally not very useful to me as I like to have more accuracy for pitch bending and modulation. Also, it turns out they have had issues with the AnalogLab software (1.0.0), which on my Mac crashes constantly. I might try the new version available in the Arturia Forums when I get a chance but don't have the patience for it right now. It does sound excellent though. In summary, a decent midi keyboard controller but the extras I thought I was paying a bit more for like the knobs, pads, pitch bend/ modulation and the software were disappointing. Honestly I had pretty low expectations knowing this is a low end product. But I have to say it would be hard to recommend this product but I do hope some of the issues can be fixed with software updates in which case I would be more than happy with this product.
I'm a guitarist new to the digital recording world. I was looking for a simple midi controller just for making drum loops a lot simpler. After looking at and trying a lot of more expensive products, this little gem caught my eye. Alas, I barely get to play guitar anymore, I'm too busy playing with the AnalogLab software with it, all the most amazing synth sounds I've ever heard. It's not cheap sounding software either, all very authentic and amazing. The amount of features this beauty offers is simply amazing. Highly recommended. It even works with Pro Tools SE, which I found difficult to find a midi controller to work with.
