Comments about Arturia KeyLab 88 Keyboard Controller:

The Arturia 88 is AMAZING!!! As a university student of music (classical piano major, music technology minor) I can say this is the best midi controller I have yet encountered. The keybed is incredibly realistic. I went to about 5 shops around Melbourne and tried all the digital and stage pianos as well as midi keyboard (priced 500 up to 8k) (including the roland A-88) and this has by far the most realistic piano feel!!! The A-88 was my second choice, but this was the best hands down. Chopin's Aeolian Harp sounded incredible on it! The keys are heavy, but no heavier that a heavy piano. The software (Pianoteq 5 and Arturias own synth plugin) it comes with is worth almost 500 in itself. The board is 12 kg, making it extremely portable. It comes with a detachable stand, and a detachable rubber extension of the board on which to sit your computer (a major help if you're planning on playing live sets from your DAW while playing piano.) Looks beautiful Buy it!

Comments about Arturia KeyLab 88 Keyboard Controller:

great unit, and i have always loved fatar boards. arturia adds a ton of live control functionality with the keylab 88. as a female, its light weight is a very welcome feature, and at under 30 lbs, it's no problem to gig with.

the software editor is great, but the manual could use more in depth descriptions of functions and options. it's not a "beginner" board if you've never dealt with midi and sys-ex before, but the learning curve is easy, and i'm a rare "deep programming" kind of girl. this board offers a healthy balance of ease and function.

9 faders is a must for me (8 just doesn't cut it), and the dual bank feature doubles everything in front of you per preset.

as i stated in the "cons", the rotary encoders increment way too slowly, even at the "fastest" setting, but i have been led to believe this can be fixed via firmware. hopefully they will address it soon. for now it's totally not a deal breaker. the sensitivity of the pads could be greater, but i use them as function buttons, not as dynamic triggers. i have another unit for that, and i'm a full time drummer anyway, so again, not a deal breaker. possibly firmware as well?

every other aspect is top notch!!! i'll be grabbing a second one for a backup soon.

Comments about Arturia KeyLab 88 Keyboard Controller:

This keyboard is a great value. It is very solidly built. I love the keyboard action. It works well with Reason 8. The plethora of adjustment knobs makes it easy to tweak the various Reason instruments. Also, I love the ability to control play/record from the keyboard. I previously used an Alesis QS6 which I have had since the early 2000s. I am an amateur keyboardist who just plays for the enjoyment of making music and playing sheet music. I have been wanting to upgrade to a full sized controller with weighted keys for a few years and I could not be happier than with the Keylab 88.

Comments about Arturia KeyLab 88 Keyboard Controller:

I honestly do not believe that there is another controller in this price range that can beat this one. Even those twice its price would have a hard time claiming to be better. It is built like a tank and all of the controls are top notch quality. I know that actions tend to be a subjective topic but being a concert level pianist, I find this action very, very good. The software that comes with the controller is excellent as well. I am using it with EWQL Pianos and it works with these pianos very well too. Additionally, all of the pianos that come with Native Instruments Komplete 10 Ultimate work equally well too.

I have a Roland DP-10 plugged in to the expression jack and a M-Audio SP-2 plugged in to the sustain jack. I have the expression jack configured for CC67 (soft) and this setup works quite well. I may get another DP-10 for the aux jack so I can do half pedaling.

For those who care to compare, I owned the Kawai MPK88 prior to this controller and really did not care for the action. I thought it was stiff and non-responsive at best. I will say that the Kawai had more control options which is good if that is what you are looking for. I just got so tired of the action that I wanted something better and opted for this one. I am glad I did. I won't be looking for another 88 key controller in my studio. This action is top notch IMHO.

It excels as an all purpose VSTi synth controller and also controls the Analog Lab software that it ships with very well too. The only thing I would not do with this controller is mix in a DAW. I will reserve that function for a dedicated controller that I will happily place on the top right of this unit.

            88 Key Heaven

Comments about Arturia KeyLab 88 Keyboard Controller:

I'm a piano player, so 88 keys is a must for me. Unfortunately that limits the number of controllers I can choose from. No worries, though because the Keylab 88 is the perfect controller. I picked this up on Memorial Day and have been in love with it. Arturia pays very close attention to detail and it shows. For example, the extension on the back allows you to place your laptop right on the board. Also, it comes with a music stand with a slot for your tablet's USB cord that clips on the back. Small things that make Arturia a forward thinking company. As for the controller itself, the Fatar made keybed is awesome. The hammer action weighted keys have a great feel to them and have really nice action. They are comparable to a real grand piano. The sliders and knobs feel solid and automatically map to my Arturia softsynths. They also easily map to other software I own. I don't have much use for the pads, but I have played around with them and they feel solid and responsive. Finally the software it comes with is really solid. The 5000 presets from their vintage synth line sound beautiful. Easily overlooked is the Pianoteq software that is also bundled in. This softward pack comes with a Steinway D4 and their won piano, the K2. Both pianos are brilliant. Their is also a UVI Steinway D4 bundled, but I like the Pianoteq better. I use this board in my studio and live with my band and it has lived up to all of my expectations. I especially like that it's light enough to carry to my gigs. They could easily sell this package for over $1000, so the price point is a huge bargain in my opinion. If you need 88 keys like I do, then you'd be foolish not to go with the Arturia Keylab 88.

Make sure to upgrade the firmware

Comments about Arturia KeyLab 88 Keyboard Controller:

I was looking forward to this controller for months based on the feature set and how light weight it is, however after trying it at NAMM I was a bit unsure about the action... it felt a little heavy and bouncy to me. I ordered one from guitar center anyway to see if I could make it work out. No amount of programming could make the velocity curve work out on a number of piano software instruments. I was about to return it when on a whim I checkout out various forums and found out that Arturia recently released a firmware patch. I installed the firmware and it was like night and day and instantly became very playable. Now, I love this controller! Long story short -- if you buy this, make sure to install the latest firmware. Note to guitar center -- you'd probably save a bunch of returns on this product if you'd install it before selling.

Comments about Arturia KeyLab 88 Keyboard Controller:

Received just in time for Christmas after watching availability for 6 months or more. Light enough to gig with, but a sturdy aluminum frame. Using MainStage 3.x for my DAW, and the KL88 gives me plenty of controls for multiple voices.

Had some difficulty getting the sustain pedal to work correctly, but once I found the proper setting, it's been flawless. Working on getting the touch sensitivity set the way I want now.

Action seemed a bit heavy out of the box, but playing heads up against my Korg SG-ProX, (also a FATAR bed), the KL88 is comparable. Key bounce is a bit noisy, but not a problem in a gig situation.

The synth voices (downloaded from Arturia) are ok, but I prefer the MainStage voices. The UVI grand piano voice is top notch.

I wouldn't recommend the KL88 for novices. You have to be a bit of a gear-head to appreciate the customization options.

Have had board for about two weeks now. This product is amazing. All buttons have a good solid feel and the pots are smooth and fluid. The action has a great feel, plus the added bonus is its appearance. I use it with Apple Logic Pro with my main sound banks being Spectrasonics, Garritan, toontrack, Camel Audio. Works seamlessly with all of them. Very solid unit.
