Duet 2 builds on the incredible success of its predecessor by incorporating customer feedback, adding advanced new features, and delivering even better sound quality than the original. While the original is one of the most respected portable audio interfaces ever, receiving many industry awards, and instrumental in the creation of numerous Grammy-winning records, Duet 2 looks to take your music even farther.

Turn your Mac into a professional recording studio
Duet 2 is a great solution for capturing your music to your Mac. With Duet 2, you can make studio quality recordings of vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards, drums, and anything musical. Since Duet 2 is portable, you can take it anywhere your creativity takes you. When it's time to mix, Duet 2's output quality lets you hear your recordings with incredible detail and dimension allowing you to put the finishing touches on your musical project like a pro. Duet 2 sounds so amazing you won't want to listen to your iTunes library without it.

Better sound quality
Using the very latest technology and drawing upon the experience of developing Apogee's new flagship audio interface, Symphony I/O, Apogee engineers rebuilt Duet to achieve a difference you can hear. From the mic preamps to the AD/DA converters, Duet 2 offers the best of everything Apogee, allowing you to capture your audio with even more clarity and dimension than the original. This is professional sound quality you can, and will want to, take anywhere.

Smooth, detailed world-class mic preamps
The Duet 2 mic preamps feature a new design, all-new components, and seamless click-free transitions as the gain increases and decreases throughout the incredible range of 0-75dB. This unprecedented feature allows you to dial in the perfect level while delivering ultra-low noise and smooth, crisp detail. Most importantly, the Duet 2 mic preamps are optimized for any sound source, so no matter what you are recording you'll capture every detail.

Pristine, next generation AD/DA converters
Much like the mic preamps, the Duet 2 AD/DA converters are an all-new design and deliver pure recordings and an exceptional listening experience possible. This totally new design takes the personal studio to the next level with state-of-the-art components and next-generation conversion.

Full Color OLED Display
New to Duet 2 is a full-color OLED display. This high-resolution screen is the main control center for Duet 2, delivering visual feedback for multiple functions including metering, numeric value for input and output levels, input grouping, and phase, muting, phantom power, and Soft Limit indication. With this display you know the status of any input and output at any given moment without having to refer to Maestro or your recording software.

Configurable Touch Pads
Duet 2 also introduces configurable touch pads. The 2 touch pads, located on either side of the encoder knob, allow you to quickly access output functions such as "Mute Outputs," "Dim Outputs," "Sum to Mono," or "Toggle Headphone Source." Each are assignable using a drop-down menu within Apogee's new Maestro 2. This unique feature allows you to select the function you want and access it directly from Duet 2 without having to look at software.

Redesigned Breakout Cable
Duet 2's new breakout cable is greatly streamlined with 2 combination mic/instrument connectors (XLR and 1/4") built into a single connector and 2 balanced 1/4" connectors for speakers. The elegant single cable-to-junction design allows for easy cable management and the locking connection to Duet 2 is robust and stylish.

Made for the Mac, Core Audio compatible
Designed exclusively for the Mac and made for GarageBand and Logic, Duet 2 is the perfect centerpiece for any personal, Mac-based studio. Duet 2 is also Core Audio compatible making it ideal for other music creation apps like Pro Tools, Ableton Live and Cubase.

All new Maestro 2 control software
Duet 2 not only benefits from Symphony I/O's sound quality development, it has been integrated into the completely redesigned Maestro 2 as well. This full version update features a new look and familiar single window, multiple tab interface for quick access to all device and system settings. It also includes touch pad assignment, Soft Limit selection, output assignments, dim and mute output selection, sample rate selection, and an improved low-latency mixer. Now all Duet 2 parameters and functions are packaged into a single window design for the most streamlined and user-friendly experience.

Soft Limit for protection from digital overs
An Apogee technology first introduced in 1992 on Apogee's AD-500 converter, Soft Limit can be heard on countless platinum selling records around the world. Once a technology exclusively reserved for Apogee's most advanced audio converters, Soft Limit is now available in Duet.

This superior analog design prevents the digital clipping that causes distortion by instantaneously rounding off transient peaks before they
hit the analog-to-digital converter. Soft Limit allows several more decibels of apparent level to be recorded while subtly providing an analog-like warmth to the sound.

4 analog outputs - separate headphone and speaker outs
By very popular demand, Duet 2 includes 4 analog outputs. Stereo headphones or left & right mono speaker outs can be assigned in pairs to output 1-2 or 3-4 or the low latency mixer and each can be placed in stereo, mono, muted or dimmed modes.

It is now possible for a DJ to monitor a separate mix in headphones while sending a house mix to the club, a live performer to send a click track to in-ear monitors while sending a backing track to front-of-house, and a recording engineer to send a headphone mix to the performer while dedicating the main outputs to studio monitors.

Balanced Outputs
Duet 2 offers balanced outputs for connection to any studio monitor or outboard equipment. There are many benefits to balanced outputs, including the ability to run cabling long distances, reduced susceptibility to external noise, as well as simply offering compatibility to a much wider variety of audio equipment over unbalanced connections.

Multifunction Controller Knob
Along with its sleek aluminum chassis, the multifunction controller knob is one of the most recognizable features of Duet 2's design. This central control feature allows you to quickly and easily toggle thru Duet 2's inputs and outputs and set levels while looking at Duet 2's dynamic OLED display.

  • USB 2.0 Mac audio interface

To sum it up- the Apogee Duet 2 is a fine interface for any mac user. It's great for me (because I record out of a small personal studio- just Pro Tools 9, 2 Sony MDR-7056 headphones, Macbook Pro) So it's perfect, and it's portable if needed. I waited 3 1/2 months to get one- and now that I have one, I can honestly say it was worth the wait!
I'm not one that really writes reviews all that often, if ever, but I felt that Apogee's Duet 2 is a product that deserves one. The features that are included in the Duet 2 run deep- I personally really like the 'soft limit' feature that is within the Maestro 2 program. Way rad!! and the pre-amps are great- especially for the price you pay for this interface! Just read the specs that are listed, so many great options/features. The only thing is if you are looking to record drums- you'll have man up with the recorderman method- aka- 2 mics for the kit (only has 2 mic out) You can actually check out apogee's drum recording example of this as well. SO! it's doable. and the interface is amazing. 24bit/192kHz for the price is downright a steal (in my opinion).
It's got a nice aluminum casing- super sturdy! I bet you this thing could def. take some tour abuse- although I plan on buying a carrying case for it- for my portable recording purposes. But it's not going to break anytime soon! Solid!
As I said earlier- the price is pretty much a steal- but within that price you get a whole bunch of awesome. So I personally think the value is pretty great! I also can't see the price-tag going down anytime soon- if ever, because of how great of a product it is- and the demand as well. This is an interface I plan on using 6-8 years down the road.

My first unit would shut down from static when I touched it, and now my replacement unit is shutting down when I touch it. I contacted apogee about it, they know the units have static issues, yet they still ship them. What a bunch of "you fill in the blanks" I will never buy anything from a company like apogee with questionable ethics---ie: continuing releasing products with problems. Don't buy it.

Comments about Apogee Duet 2 USB Interface Regular:

Great quality and low latenency!

Good for both a recording interface or for just getting high quality DACs for listening. Solid drivers... allows for separate monitoring on headphones and monitors... integrates beautifully with Logic... solid construction with a great look and feel

It would be nice if there was Windows support, but I'd much rather take a high quality, focused product than a mediocre dual platform product

your sound quality will improve

About Me Professional Musician

Comments about Apogee Duet 2 USB Interface Regular:

I have been producing music (mostly EDM) for 10 years. Because I was on a budget before, my go-to audio interfaces always were the ones below 200$. Then I decided to switch to something that would integrate with my Mac (I was tired of having 3 different opportunities to change the volume and so on), so I made the investment and bought this thing.
The first thing that I noticed is that it is a little bigger than it looks, but it looks really shiny and feels very sturdy.
The OLED display is a very nice thing to have; i find myself trusting its meters and clip display more than my DAWs. The action of the two touch buttons can be adjusted to your needs (clear meters, mute, dim etc.).
The wheel feels very nice and it integrates perfectly with the Mac's built-in volume control.

BUT... the best thing really is the sound quality. I am not recording anything, so I can just tell you about the d/a conversion. I am amazed how clear I can hear mistakes that I made in previous productions which my old audio interface didn't tell me about. No problems here with Mountain Lion as well. Totally compatible with the Macbook Pro Retina, and I am even running it through a (powered) USB hub without problems (although Apogee tells you not to).

Note that other reviews on this site only gave 1 star when I understand they don't have any criticism about it (maybe they got confused with the star rating system). The only thing that I am missing is a built-in MIDI interface.

Buy this and hear your sound improving!

Got this after using a Firepod for many years. Huge upgrade! The lastest version of the drivers are extremely stable. Haven't had any issues there. The converters are so clear and open. The stereo field is unbelievably huge. I'm hoping to get a Quartet or Ensemble soon and aggregate them together for more channels. The portability is great for if I'm recording someone at their house. I'm really glad I got this. I'll be using all Apogee equipment from now on.

Died after third session. Software issues between Maestro and my Macbook Pro. Expect issue after issue with this thing. I've heard of people upgrading their macs to a newer OS. Shouldnt have to do that. This has great potential and sounded awesome, but way too much trouble. Going back to PC.

Comments about Apogee Duet 2 USB Interface Regular:

I am a recording engineer and I rely on tools that function well and can produce the desired result as soon as possible. The duet 2 does just that. In the studio I rely on apogee's fine line of AD/DA 16x for interface but at home on my desk I have the Duet 2. I believe the conversion in the Apogee duet 2 is on par with apogee's other AD/DA conversion products. I liked it so much that I bought a second one just to playback mixes for clients at the studio. The pre amps are very clean an transparent. The touch screen functions are perfect. I especially like the sum to mono function for checking phase relationships while editing. The breakout cable is strong and versatile. The ability to bus power the unit off USB is killer for laptop work. There are no "cons" to this product in my opinion.

          Hands down the best

          By KIP GROOMS

          from Seattle

Comments about Apogee Duet 2 USB Interface Regular:

I am running Apple iMac Mountain Lion and Apple Logic Pro 9. Hooking up and authorizing the Apogee Duet2 was seemless, painless and EASY. For me that was a big deal. I can use a computer all day long but when it comes to authorizing software and getting programs to talk to each other, it can get a bit dicey for me. The Duet2 sounds amazing and the controls were well thought out. (I do wish Apogee made a transport device for across the room control). If all you need is two(2) inputs this unit is hands down worth the money. If I need more than two(2) channels I have been recording onto my Korg D3200 and then tranfering through the Duet2. I was using PC windows 7 and presonus. I have since changed to Apple and gotten rid of all my presonus (that cost me some $$$$$$$$) If you can afford it, get the Apogee Duet2, you won't be sorry.

Once again, this thing is not cheap. Bought this March and still not working right.
The features are great. There continue to be software problems.
I've done the latest Apple and May apogee updates. Still have to unplug the Duet 2 to get recognized . Wheres the help? Is this covered by warranty?
This thing is not cheap. Wish i would have bought something else.

Great sound - wonderful integration with Apple

          By Robert Garlinghouse

          from Undisclosed

Comments about Apogee Duet 2 USB Interface Regular:

I recently swiched from PC to Apple and had to give up my old recording system. I've been using the Duet 2 for about six months. For weekender garage band types, you can't beat the combination of Apple + Garage Band + Duet 2. Like everything "apple", the Duet 2 is well integrated with the apple sound system, doesn't require a PhD. Initial set up? Amazingly simple. Nothing like the old days on the PC based system. Then, once configured, laying tracks and to mixing down to an MP3 ... super easy. The design of the Duet is quite elegant and intuitive. Hi quality pre-amps. The sound is great.

I'm looking forward to Apogee's break-out box that will help out considerably with cable management.

          Buy it.

          By ARON WRIGHT

          from Nashville, TN

Comments about Apogee Duet 2 USB Interface Regular:

The apogee duet 2 sounds amazing. If you only need two inputs this piece of hardware is a no-brainer. I was previously using a Digi 002 rack. The duet 2 has much more detail, sounds much more 3 dimensional, and is much more portable. I recorded my last record in a studio with Neumann mics through a Neve console and all kinds of outboard gear- I prefer the sound of My Blue Baby bottle or SM7b and Rode NT5s with the Duet 2. So far I've recorded Vocals, guitar, tuba, cello and trumpet through it. It's like I've heard my mics for the first time. Also, you'll hear things in recordings, even mp3s that you didn't notice before which must be the D/A conversion The Apogee Maestro software works great. Overall, best money I've ever spent on recording gear.

Duet 2 is Not Always Recognized By The OS After Reboots or Shutdowns

          By Uker

          from Texas

Comments about Apogee Duet 2 USB Interface Regular:

The thing is, when the Duet 2 IS recognized by my iMac, it sounds great! Plenty of headroom with a variety of mics. I've used the SM58, SM81, Rode NT1 through it and they all sound great. Its very clear and detailed and has a certain "airy" quality that's missing in some of the other audio interfaces I've used.

So in summary, once it's actually working, it is a very nice sounding audio interface. But having to deal with the interface not being recognized by the OS is aggravating and a workflow killer.
I'm having the same problem mentioned by other reviewers with my Apogee Duet 2 interface. Namely that when I shutdown my iMac or reboot, roughly 50-60% of the time, the Duet 2 fails to be recognized. The Apogee Maestro software will say there is no Apogee device connected, but it is. I've downloaded the latest drivers from Apogee that were supposed to correct this issue (Oct. 2011 version), but still have the same problem. I've uninstalled/reinstalled ad nauseum, same problem. The only way to get it recognized again is to unplug and plug back in the USB cable while sometimes also holding down the big volume knob.

This problem really puts a damper on your creative work flow. Seriously, who has time for this? When you want to record and make music, the one thing you DON'T want to have to hassle with, is your audio interface. This is not a cheap interface. For the price you would think Apogee could do better. Plus, they only have to test on Macs. Most all other audio interface companies have to test and QA on both Macs and PCs. Very frustrating.
Bad quality. Not sure if its the drivers or the interface itself, but either way, I shouldn't have to be dealing with these problems for this price!
Additional info: I'm not a big fan of having to use software for engaging phantom power and for switching between line and mic on the input connectors. Having dedicated hardware buttons for this would be much better, IMO.
