A very good middle of the road priced unit

It is hard to find a great recording compressor under $800 but this unit accomplishes the task. Budget compressor can get the job done but sometimes you need something that provides a higher quality or more options. The Aphex 661 is an excellent compressor that gives you the best in the price range. The unit is nearly noiseless and that is essential when making critical recordings.

Adds fat bass, great for vocals too

I actually have two the older model Aphex Expressor Compressor/Limiter and use them soley for recording. Makes bass and drums (especially snare and kick) sound huge, and give the limiting/compression you need to keep the recording levels from peaking. I've also used them on vocals, not as a final compressor but with light settings during the recording. They add a little hiss to the recording, but not noticable during playback. All in all it's a very good home studio compressor.
