Aphex 230 Preamp

A superior piece of equipment that meets all expectations, the Aphex 230 Preamp is now in use in recording radio segments of Digital Computer Talk with Benjamin Rockwell.

Not bad. Not good.

Noticeably better than the preamp on my MOTU but not really ideal for vocals. The big bottom would be great for radio broadcasts and what not. I thought it would help phatten up my rapping voice but I was mistaken. There is no way to cut the lows other than the low cut switch which is already activated and I STILL get too much low end on my vocals. Female vocals I've recorded have come out pretty clean because of the lack of low end in their voices but not good for male vocals. My other complaint is the compressor uses the gain to set the threshold but having the compressor on in ANY setting causes WAY too much compression. Maybe it's because it's automatically set to 4:1 and there is no way to change it. Because I am considering starting an internet radio show I don't regret this purchase completely but I wouldn't buy into the hype that it's good for vocals. The deesser is OK but seems to kill the vocals and deessing is better done in Cubase with a Waves R-Dess. I believe what Aphex boasts about this unit is ultimately their weakness which is simplified controls all the way around. You NEED a free threshold on the comp, a free attack on the comp and more control over the desser and the EQ in order to be effective. Otherwise you get a generic sound that is not finely tuned. After owning it and using it for a year and with my album set to come out in about 70 days I'm going to buy the Avalon today and pray that business keeps going well so financial hit doesn't totally screw me. It all comes down to pride in your music I guess. With a superclean instrument track, there is no excuse for vocals to sound less than perfect too. My advice. Pony up a few hundred bucks more (or even another thousand) and get something other than the Aphex if you're recording music. It's a great piece of equipment and solidly made. It's just not right for my particular application.
