MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY
On May 1st, 2009, the Mackie, TAPCO, Crate, Blackheart and Ampeg websites will be updated with the addition of warranty URLs (e.g. www.mackie.com/warranty) expressing new A Stock warranty terms. These warranty URLs will go live on May 1st, 2009. Formerly, warranty periods for these LOUD brands appeared in a variety of locations – in product manuals (for Mackie and TAPCO) and on warranty cards and hang tags (for Crate, Blackheart and Ampeg). In order to streamline and clarify this process, Mackie, TAPCO, Crate, Blackheart and Ampeg warranty periods and terms will be communicated in full on the warranty pages. Any LOUD products purchased prior to May 1st will bear with them the manufacturer’s warranty as predates the new policy. Moving through this transition, in order for customers to obtain warranty service, both the sales receipt and a physical copy of the (older) warranty statement will be required by our Service and Support departments in order to issue Service Requests, etc. If the product was purchased on or after May 1st, 2009, but a physical copy of the older warranty terms is not presented, the new warranty terms and periods will apply. Meanwhile, the products that bear with them the new warranty periods (as reflected in the box contents of each product) are being tracked by serial #, and contain new warranty content referring customers to the appropriate brand website. The information below reflects the product warranty periods that will be effective on May 1st, 2009 for the Mackie, TAPCO, Crate, Blackheart and Ampeg brands: Mackie: A 3-year, nontransferable, inclusive warranty on electronics and a 2-year, nontransferable, inclusive warranty on drivers (where applicable) apply to loudspeakers (active and passive), power amps, powered mixers, and HR studio monitors. Specific models under this warranty include all SRM, HD, SA, C and S Series Speakers, all FRS Amplifiers, all HRmk2 Studio Monitors. A 1-year, all inclusive, nontransferable warranty applies to all mixers, MR Studio Monitors, Control Surfaces, Processors (digital), MR Studio Monitors, Control Surfaces, Audio/MIDI Interfaces, other SR & Recording Products. Specific product models under this warranty include all Onyx Compact, 4-bus and 8-bus, all VLZ3, all PPM, all ProFX, all CFXmk2 Mixers, all MR Studio Monitors, Big Knob, Onyx 800R, all MCU Pro family. GC web site messed up my review. This is the short version. The pedal is excellent. Superior tone, awesome crunch distortion, heavy duty tank-like build quality. I don't own a bass amp, and now I don't need to. I use this pedal XLR-to-interface for recording. Wouldn't think twice about bringing it to a gig and directly plugging into the house PA. The DI itself is great, nice, clean tone (I use a 12V DC power supply for a little extra head room). The EQ portion (switchable) is good, nicely laid out and very functional. Easy to use and read dials. The Scrambler unit is perfect. Nice crunchy distortion. I use the Blend knob about 1/2 which mixes the distortion and DI sound about 50/50. This way when I enable the Scrambler I don't lose tone - the bottom end stays solid while the top end crunches up. Sounds AWESOME. You can get wild with the knobs but I keep the distortion 3/4 and the blend 1/2 and I get a sweet crunchy sound when enabled. I use the EQ portion for volume boost into my interface for recording. I don't use the Ultra Hi or Low buttons. The Hi adds 'something' but I can't hear it. The low removes a little low-mids and boosts about 40Hz. For my style of rock it doesn't make any tone difference so I leave them both off.
I really appreciate the XLR output (has 1/4" line out as well) with ground lift. I don't use the Aux input. The LEDs on the pedal are quite bright, you'll definitely see them. Overall build quality is top-of-the-line. This pedal will take a beating and keep on rocking. Mine did not come with a power supply since I bought it open-box, I don't know if a new one does. I used an aftermarket 12v supply (unit supports 9-12v DC). The only Cons I will nit pick about: Dials are very light - brushing them with your hand will change them. Also, I'd like a non-EQ volume control as well. As it is you need to engage the EQ to use the volume control. This is a must-have Ampeg Bass DI. If it were to break I'd buy another ASAP.

Used it for gigs a few times. It's great and powerful as it provides a lot of extra low end. However, it does affect the sound as the warm sound of the original amp is gone. The battery life is horrible and lasted 1 gig, and the unit should be used using an adapter. The unit made a very loud screeching noise due to the battery draining.

Ampeg Tone

By Mark

Comments about Ampeg SCR-DI Bass DI Preamp with Scrambler Overdrive:

It sure has the Ampeg tone and it should, it's Ampeg. Very sturdy and built for gigging. I used it with a generic power supply I had from another pedal. The power supply met the Specs of the FAQ (9v DC, Center Negative, greater than 500ma) and it was noisy with a lot of hiss. Tried a 9v battery and it was dead silent. Tried a Tech 21 power supply I had from my VT Bass (It meets the specs in the manual but not the FAQ because it is only 100ma) and the SCR-DI was completely silent and functions just fine. So power supply quality can play an issue with sound quality if you are having issues in that department. Still messing around with the scrambler to get that perfect sound from it. I really like that the scrambler has a blend knob. A great purchase I do not regret.

Comments about Ampeg SCR-DI Bass DI Preamp with Scrambler Overdrive:

First off, this thing is built like a tank. Solid as a rock. No sharp edges, has both a vintage and modern look to it.

Headphone and Aux in options are really nice. Great for late night playing in the home.

The moment I engaged it the tone difference was immediately noticeable. Very clear and high fidelity sounding. And unlike many preamp boxes that simply eq your instrument's sound, this unit colors the sound with Ampeg tone.

And speaking of that sound ... it's true Ampeg. Produces that nice fat, smooth, buttery tone Ampeg is known for. Perhaps lacks a bit in low midrange but that's based on my own personal preference. That's easily compensated by adjusting your bass or eq pedal.

The only negative I can think of is not having a compressor. If it did my rating would be 10.0.
As is my rating is 9.0.

This is a great tool for bassists because of it's range of uses. It is a great EQ pedal that provides classic ampeg tone. It is a scrambler distortion pedal and it is a d.i. for recording, performing, and practicing. without a Rig or for sending your great Ampeg tone to a board. Built sturdy and fits on a gig bag. Looks cool on the pedal board and sounds amazing no matter what tone you choose. Really impressed.

Comments about Ampeg SCR-DI Bass DI Preamp with Scrambler Overdrive:

Heavy, tank build with a few big misses. If you are one that will switch between active and passive basses, you're going to HATE the pin switching method buried inside the case to do this. (those that have been burning these up...be sure you know how that relates to your bass electronics!)

the headphone output and aux inputs are great for practicing, particularly with the aux level having it's own knob.

The main channel sound shaping and boost is very nice, the Scrambler channel, not so much. A small tuner would be useful.

Overall, it's a middling effort with some good uses, some bad ideas and still short of a couple of features that could make it great.

Comments about Ampeg SCR-DI Bass DI Preamp with Scrambler Overdrive:

I also purchased the Micro VR Stack with additional SVT 210 Cab.
It by it's self sound great, I also have the Aguilar TH500 head and 2 DB 112 bottoms.
I can't decide witch rig I like the most so I just switch back and forth so neither of them get jealous.
The Micro VR head doesn't give you that saturated Peg sound on its own, so I felt I should give this booger a try, Dang what a surprise I got! this puppy makes my Micro VR sound as good as my old SVT 350 with a 410 HLF bottom.
With no reservations my Micro VR can handle any gig the TH500 with the DB112 bottoms can handle.
I'm very pleased with this product. I can get a huge clean full sound out of it or I can dial up any thing from clean to a dump truck full of dirt!
I need to mention the tone stack in this unit is very usable with a wide range of shaping.
My Aguilar even gets the SVT sound happening
                IT WILL DELIVER!!!!!!!!!

Comments about Ampeg SCR-DI Bass DI Preamp with Scrambler Overdrive:

I'm a guitar player and a studio engineer/producer who decided to get a bass for the studio and some part time live gigging. Bought a Mid-90's Mexican P Bass and one of the early 2000's Peavey Max 115 bass amps. The P Bass is great and the amp was ok at first... Plenty loud but muddy midrange and somewhat flubby bass... Highs were ok but not moldable. This pedal made that cheap amp sound like a $1000 Ampeg with the flip of a switch!! Totally couldn't believe it. Once I kicked this thing on it was like a whole new amp. Absolutely an amazing product if you like Ampeg tones!! Scrambler side is cool too, so long as you use it for a subtle SVT growl... Not really an overdrive. If you want overdrive buy a RAT or something. The scrambler is meant to be used as a slight coloring that recreates the soft, pleasant clipping of an old tube amp. If you turn the drive and blend all the way up.... You're doing it wrong IMHO. Anyways, killer product. Would recommend to anyone. Can't wait to use it in the studio!!

The scrambler function seems almost useless to, more of a booster with a slight color of sound. I bought this item as we run DI w/o amps and I wanted to be able to tweak my sound independent of the board. We will see how it works.

Comments about Ampeg SCR-DI Bass DI Preamp with Scrambler Overdrive:

Used it for gigs a few times. It's great and powerful as it provides a lot of extra low end. However, it does affect the sound as the warm sound of the original amp is gone. The battery life is horrible and lasted 1 gig, and the unit should be used using an adapter. The unit made a very loud screeching noise due to the battery draining.
