I have owned this amp for 3 years and have used it for small gigs and jams of all types. Performance is good and it sounds very nice. It has that typical Ampeg SS tone that seems slighlty fuzzy and mid-range heavy. It's nice and round but not vintage like. I hope that doesn't confuse anyone. I like it... Volume wise I have the same problem as the other reviewer. It's loud enough in small gigs and jams with a couple of 65 watt guitar amps and a drummer. When you add keys and another guitar you start pushing this amp at moderate volume levels. I will run the gain at 8 and the volume at 8 to stay in the mix on stage. I also will dial in some more mids on the EQ to cut through. In side by side copmarison w/my Peavey Combo 115 (200 watts)the Peavey flat out blows the Ampeg away in sheer volume. It sounds huge compared to my BA115HP. It does hang in there though and can be used as a gig amp as long as your stage volume isn't too high. I would have liked to have had an effects loop because some pedals I like to to run through the loop instead of directly into the input and the ability to run an extention cab would have been nice. The D.I. is nice and quiet and sends a nice clean signal to the board. The built in tuner is handy as well. I have had some problems with the tweeter on my amp and it required a 6 month stay in two different repair facilities before it was fixed. I don't think the long repair times was caused by Ampeg so much as it was just bad repair shops in my area. Everything was covered under warranty though. Over all it's a nice amp and has features that make me keep it. I use it as a practice/jam amp more than anything these days and I still really like the way it sounds.

I purchased this BA-115HP amp online because local stores had only the demo in stock. This amp is a little pricey but has great tone and features. The tuner is a nice touch for quick approximate tuning. I also love the variable level control for the true horn unlike the piezo-electric horn in the cheaper BA-115. The fact that this amp is passively cooled is also nice while practicing in the house because there is no fan noise. What is NOT great is the quality of construction. There appears to be a severe problem with these amps rattling! At even mid volumes, I had a severe rattle over a 3 note range near the front upper side of the grill. Seeing other reviewers with similar rattles, I called Ampeg's support line to see if there was a service bulletin on this problem like recalled grill mounts or something simple that could be easily fixed. They denied any problems with this amp and recommended that I exchange it with the vendor. After finally traveling 50 miles to the nearest Guitar Center that had one in stock, I was very suspicious about this problem so I asked to play their demo unit. It was a brand new just unboxed demo that had not yet been plugged in. It rattled worse than mine! This one in the rear of the cabinet. At this point I realized that even though Ampeg built their reputation on great tone and amps that were built in the US, they have compromised their quality by having these amps built in China. Unfortunately, I cannot afford one of the very few amps they still manufacture here in the US, so I decided to exchange the amp for another brand. Letۡs hope Ampeg gets their head out of the sand and makes a radical change in manufacturing process before they become a legend of a company that once built great amps.

This isn't the Ampeg I know!

By Troy Falciani

from Spokane, WA.

This amp had all of the tone that I wanted and was the perfect size for the small gigs I was playing. The problem was that the first one had a bad driver straight out of the box, so I took it back to G.C. and they set me up with another. A day later I played an acoustic show in a small venue. The amp didn?t even make it through the first set before the same driver problem started. I?ve never had any problems with my Ampeg amps before, but it seems that Ampeg really dropped the ball on this one.

Great Tone!

By JULIAN ROUSE

from Cairo GA

I was unsure about what brand of amp to buy, but I knew I really wanted that Ampeg sound. Reading some of the reviews was a little jarring, but I decided to go for it, after tech support at Ampeg suggested this model. I am a novice, and not a gigging bassist at this point. But I have been a drummer and involved in sound for over 25 years. I know what sounds good. THIS sounds good! No disappointments. I bought the service plan, too so that if I manage to rattle it apart while shaking my home to pieces, I am covered!

Great Amp!

By JULIAN ROUSE

from Cairo GA

I bought this amp despite some negative reviews I read. I knew that I wanted that Ampeg sound, and anything else would be cutting corners. It's a heavy amp, (thanks for including rollers) and it sounds great. am using it in a small room and not gigging with it, so I cannot attest to it's use at the club, but the tone is great with my SBMM Ray 34. I am keeping the tone flat on the amp and boosting the low just a bit on the bass' preamp. Boost it all the way and the thing could do structural damage to the house. All in all I am very and have no complaints with the rig at all.

Ampeg Tone!

By julian rouse

from Albany GA

I just got my amp last night and though I haven't really put it through the paces yet, I am thrilled to pieces with the sound. I almost went for a Peavey, but even though it got stellar reviews I just didn't think I'd be happy if I didn't go for the Ampeg Sound. The built in tuner wasn't a factor in deciding to buy this particular amp, but it is tremendously convenient and you won't misplace it. I bought this model at the recommendation of Ampeg's the support department at Loud Technologies. I also got the 3 year plan so I won't have any worries along the way. The amp is loud and powerful and I have a Ray 34 and they are a match made in heaven.

EXCELLENT AMP... When you get one that works....

By Steve

from Aliso Viejo, California

I've been a BIG fan of Ampeg since a guy in my band bought one for me to use in 2002. 2 months ago, I bought a BA115hp for our church, got it out of the box, and it was making a small buzzing sound. I took it back to Guitar Center and got another one and it was great! Then a month ago, I decided to get one for myself. I bought the floor model from Best buy and it was making a weird air noise so I returned it and went to Guitar Center and bought one in the box. Unfortunately, it was lightly distorted! I took it back and went to ANOTHER Guitar Center and got another new one in the box and it sounded beautiful! This is NOT typical of Ampeg amps! One of the guys at GC said that they recently outsourced to China! I highly recommend this amp! It sounds clean and low! But get a warranty and test it thoroughly as soon as you get it home! Replace it immediately if you hear something that shouldn't be there! I gave it 4 stars only because 3 out of 5 amps I went through were defective! The amp really does sound amazing when it works!

It Is What It Is

By Brian D

from Flagstaff, AZ

I've owned this model for going on five years and it's held up very, very well. Being said, I have used later models at GC to try out new basses over the years. The newer models have some minor cosmetic differences and don't seem to be as high quality or as well put together as mine. That's why I gave it 4 stars. All of my basses have active electronics, but I never use the padded input on the amp. That is the secret to getting some volume and a slightly fuzzy tone out of this amp. Otherwise, it sounds anemic. If you need more volume than that, then Ampeg makes the BA 300 and 600; however, those amps are overpriced and completely lacking in quality. This is not a substitute for a strong head and 4 10's, either. This amp has beautiful tone with crisp highs and thunderous lows, but it can get somewhat boomy depending how you set the EQ's. The shaping control is nice. I usually have mine set right on 3, though. I'm not afraid of mids, so I'll put it on 4 to get somewhat of a Seattle grunge sound. I like the slap and pop tone, but I think it's best suited to rock and metal slap than to funk. I've played everything from bluegrass to death metal on this amp and it all sounds great. The tuner works great. A nice trick that you can do with this amp is to connect a guitar processor to the line in to jam with a guitarist with one amp. My drum machine sounds great through it, too.

Good Amp

By The Hulk

from St. Paul, MN

I picked up this amp about a month ago. I originally had picked up a smaller Line 6 Studio 110 but found out the Line 6 model was just not enough. I tested out an Acoutic 200 Combo which had a great punch to it but the salesman recommended the Ampeg instead. I've mainly used the Ampeg for practice and it has been providing a solid sound without any issues. I'll play my second gig with it this Friday. I'm looking forward to using this amp, it has a warm sound to it and makes my bass sound great. The only downfall is there is no effects input to the amp and I could use more juice (boost it up another 150 watts). However, I've been searching the past three months and have yet to find a better amp for the same price. I am satisfied having bought the amp new at this price.

nice amp

By Ron

I bought a BA115HP recently and I have noticed also that you have to have the master vol max and the pre on 7 or so even for a country band. but it does sound great....I just wish there was a little more headroom......ron... my other amp is a svt.

Amazing amp

By Nick

from Cincinnati, OH

This amp is one of the best amps I've ever played on. It's simple, but so versatile. I play metal with my Schecter 6 string and it sounds amazing, deep and clear. Then I switch to my Fretless jazz bass and the tone is so pure and smooth. I don't have a complaint about this amp at all. The speaker never gets floppy or anything at high volumes, which I never have to turn it up to. I've played this on rock gigs, jazz jams, and even with a marching band, it could clearly be heard on 6.This amp is great for the money and a great choice for any bassist.
