Ampeg SVT-2 Pro Series Amp Head

On May 1st, 2009, the Mackie, TAPCO, Crate, Blackheart and Ampeg websites will be updated with the addition of warranty URLs (e.g. www.mackie.com/warranty) expressing new A Stock warranty terms. These warranty URLs will go live on May 1st, 2009. Formerly, warranty periods for these LOUD brands appeared in a variety of locations – in product manuals (for Mackie and TAPCO) and on warranty cards and hang tags (for Crate, Blackheart and Ampeg). In order to streamline and clarify this process, Mackie, TAPCO, Crate, Blackheart and Ampeg warranty periods and terms will be communicated in full on the warranty pages. Any LOUD products purchased prior to May 1st will bear with them the manufacturer’s warranty as predates the new policy. Moving through this transition, in order for customers to obtain warranty service, both the sales receipt and a physical copy of the (older) warranty statement will be required by our Service and Support departments in order to issue Service Requests, etc. If the product was purchased on or after May 1st, 2009, but a physical copy of the older warranty terms is not presented, the new warranty terms and periods will apply. Meanwhile, the products that bear with them the new warranty periods (as reflected in the box contents of each product) are being tracked by serial #, and contain new warranty content referring customers to the appropriate brand website. The information below reflects the product warranty periods that will be effective on May 1st, 2009 for the Mackie, TAPCO, Crate, Blackheart and Ampeg brands: Mackie: A 3-year, nontransferable, inclusive warranty on electronics and a 2-year, nontransferable, inclusive warranty on drivers (where applicable) apply to loudspeakers (active and passive), power amps, powered mixers, and HR studio monitors. • Killer tone - but heavy!

As reviewed by greg on 7/29/2011

If you are looking for excellent tone then forget about solid state amps that weigh 5Lbs. - they just don't sound like one of these monsters. Solid state amps are many times cheaper to manufacture; are easier to ship (due to weight); are a little less delicate but do not come close to the tone you get from an all tube amp. Many amps that claim to be all tube are really just a tube preamp. The better amps will have more than one tube in the preamp - usually between 2 and 4 or 5 tubes but they produce power from a mosfet or other class D type amplifier. This is an acceptable alternative to all tube amps that use power tubes but there is something about the way tube power amps sound that you cannot get from solid state. The tubes have a subtle "click" that gives basses a real nice warm but crisp tone. This amp is really nice. I have one that was made in the USA - now I believe they are made in China so I don't know how that may or may not impact the quality. Be aware that no matter where they are made you need to be careful when moving these around, they are heavy - 70Lbs. and that is before putting it in a rack case so be prepared. Tube amps are a little more delicate to bumps and knocks - more so when they are hot so let it cool a little before moving if possible. You will love the tone you get from this amp. It has all the classic SVT tone plus a few great enhancements. I personally do not use the EQ because that is the only place in the amp that the signal moves out of the pure analog state but the EQ is very usuful to a lot of players. I like the tube drive control. I use just a little of it but it gives a great growl to the sound. That is one feature not available on the standard SVT and is a very cool feature. Like the other reviewer said "expensive and heavy but worth it" I completely agree.

  • The Growly Beast

As reviewed by Kevin Glenn on 9/20/2006

The SVT 2 PRO is for anyone who wants more versatility over the SVT Classic. The EQ controls allow more bass, mids, and highs for your tone. The Drive control on the 2 PRO allows the unit to do that famous Ampeg Tube Growl at low volumes. Sounds just like the Classic, but is much versatile tone wise. Heavy and expensive, but the tone is worth every penny.
