Bought a pair of these about a year ago or so now and have been very pleased with their performance. Have used them to DJ events in houses, medium sized buildings and even in gymnasium sized spaces and they sound very good (even without a bass bottom added). I usually play music that has bottom to it (soul/r&b,funk,disco,hip hop, reggae and dance) so with a mixer that can provide some bass as well as the self powered speakers themselves I find that you don't always have to have a bass bottom! I'm gonna get a couple more!
I have owned two of these powered cabs. Purchased aprox 2 and half years ago. Started out using them alone for keyboards and vocals, then added 2 mackie sw1501 powered subs. They have been work horses for me in many venues. I have really pushed these babies.....so far so good. With subs they really perform great.........
As a mobile DJ (playing mostly hip-hop and pop) the American Audios work fine for small to mid-sized venues. For larger venues, I run them with the B-52 powered subs and the sound is very full at high volume. The powered Mackie 3 way speakers only power the highs at 150 watts so running these with subs actually produces a stronger sound.
They aren't Mackies, But they are decent monitors. I've also used them to DJ a small party and they are a little short on the bass. But as a floor moniter for my Southern Rock band they aren't bad 225 watts at your feet so all in all they're cheap at about $300 and a good value for the money you want great but $700 mackies you want serviceable buy these.
I had them for 3 years. My first speakers as I entered a Mobile DJ world. They sound good if you don't turn them up, but that's not an option for me. At half way the bass, and highs become hars, standard DJ mixer not able to correct it, I had to use equalizer. At hard use just won't sound right. They also break down, happened to me twice, in a middle of a party. Voltage regulator is the weak spot. Good for starters, has all the knobs and plugs you need, for the price is ok up to 50-60 people gigs, but this is not for picky ones.
These speakers are decent for mobile DJ's. They don't have the best tone or quality sound, but they are acceptable. I saw a DJ using them at a friends sweet 16, he was using top of the line Pioneer DJ equipment and pre-amps, but the speakers seemed to sound not so great. The sound was a little muffled when he turned the bass up, and the treble seemed to become very faded. When the treble was turned all the way up, the tone was very harsh, the speaker wasn't very accurate either. There aren't many speakers that are very good for mobile DJ's, and this is definitely isn't one of them. THis speaker is something i would recommend to beginners who need a PA system to practice with, other than that, i advise against it.
The American Audio DLS-15P powered speakers are my new first choice for mobile DJ events. They provide great sound, are easy to set up and eliminate the need for my extremely heavy amp rack. Convienance and price are what motivated me to purchase them but after turning them on and hearing the thump of the bass line and the clear high ends I was convinced that these were a great purchase from my Guitar Center.
