I was called very recently to do Donizetti's "Don Pasquale." By the time I got the music, I had only two days to prepare an 82 page opera--more than 50% of which is in C. I'm not particularly proud to admit this, but my transposing chops are probably not what they should be. Forgive me Iggy. (God rest his soul.) Fortunately, I found a respected colleague who was willing to rent me his beautiful 105xxx series Buffet C clarinet. In the meantime I had been hearing some buzz about these Amati C clarinets--mostly about their affordability. Determined not to be again caught off-guard in the future, I decided to give it a try. Frankly, I never thought a horn this affordable--OK, let's not mince words--CHEAP could ever play very well. Man, I could not have been more wrong. I did a side-by-side comparison, and for me the Amati plays better than the Buffet. With the stock barrel, I checked it against a tuner at A441. The throat tones are beautifully in tune, and even though the notes above high A are a bit sharp, there's nothing that's unworkable. For me however, it was the way the horn blew--much more like my R-13 B-flat than even the Buffet C. Go figure. Also notable was the unexpected level of craftsmanship. By all appearances the clarinet is made of high grade wood: tight, even grain (can't say if it's granadilla or not). The excellent keywork felt comfortable under my fingers too. Finally, a special thanks to the person/s who put the clarinet in such outstanding mechanical condition. It arrived over night in absolutely perfect working condition, with well regulated keys and airtight pads. I used it that very night. I keep asking myself how they can sell a horn like this for so little. Hence the one line summary...

I've been playing this clarinet on and off on the rare occasions that I need a C clarinet (including occasionally substituting for a flute duing a wind choir or violin for a pit orchestra that I'm currently playing in). The craftmanship is really pretty good, and overall tone is competent, although unremarkable. Intonation is generally pretty consistent throughout the compass of the instrument's range-- except in the altissimo range. Notes above high D#/Eb tend to play extremely flat (almost a full half tone low). However, for the price, and unless you will be consistently playing in the extreme upper range of this clarinet, this C clarinet would be hard to beat.

Great instrument, easy to play, great intonation.

By Javier Mejia

Comments about Amati Model 351 C Clarinet:

I purchased my "C" Amati clarinet because my private instructor's "C" plays so well. The Amati came carefully wrapped, corked and felt wedged around & under most keys. Keys have excellent nickel/silver plating, feels and looks like sterling silver. It has very quiet action; pads are in good condition but a little thicker in the lower joint. It comes with an adjustable thumb rest. This is an all wood clarinet. The only adjustment needed is the LH C#/G# key. I play on a BPO2, but the horn came with an Amati 6 mouthpiece. The 6 plays quite evenly in all register and has an excellent response. Great intonation, even D3, E4, F4 & G4. This clarinet may be pitched at A442, which is fine, church organs and strings tent to be sharp anyway.

An excellent performing instrument for those on a budget

By John Holesha

from South Florida

Comments about Amati Model 351 C Clarinet:

Occasionally, I need to perform music written for a "C" clarinet in Church, orchestral, and chamber group settings. I have never been very confident at sight transposition and consequently always write out the transposed part for performance. This exercise gets old quickly. I was looking for an inexpensive instrument that plays well and in tune. I am amazed how well the Amati "C" clarinet performs. The adjustable thumb rest is an unexpected benefit. I have had several individuals that play with me comment that they cannot tell the difference from when I am playing the Amati "C" clarinet or the Buffet R-13 B flat clarinet. Overall, I am very satisfied with the value and playing pleasure this instrument affords me.

great horn if adjusted properly

Comments about Amati Model 351 C Clarinet:

I wanted a C clarinet to avoid transposing when playing in a group setting. I asked ww&bw to shop check the horn before sending it out. The horn arrived in perfect shape with a "shop check tag" and I am very satisfied with the horn.

Excellent rapport qualité - prix

Comments about Amati Model 351 C Clarinet:

Une clarinette d'étude assez soignée. (A quite well-made student clarinet.) Les mécaniques sont très souples. (The key movement), is very flexible / supple.) Les ressorts sont en acier bleu, les tampons sont de type classique, le clétage argenté. (The springs are in blue steel, the pads are of the classical type, the keys are nickel-silver.) Le son est très agréable dans les registres grave à aigue mais en sur aigue, à partir du do, les notes sont un peu basses, il vous faudra un bec adapté et une anche pas trop faible. (The sound is very agreeable in the low to high registers, but concerning the high registers, starting with C, the notes are a little flat, you will need to adapt your embouchure, and use a stronger reed.) Ne pas a avoir à transposer, puisqu'en tonalité de Do, à vue est un vrai plaisir, je vous l'assure. (Not having to transpose, since it is pitched in C, makes it a true pleasure, that I assure you.) Le fait que la clarinette soit plus petite apporte un confort de jeu notable. (The fact that the clarinet is smaller gives it a notable ease and comfort of playing.) Pour résumer c'est un très bon instrument pour un débutant ou amateur. (To sum up, it is a very good instrument for a beginner or an amateur.)

Surprisingly good instrument, a joy to play

By Rick Campbell

from Portland, OR

Comments about Amati Model 351 C Clarinet:

I first learned about the C Clarinet in the Cambridge Companion to the Clarinet, ed. Colin Lawson. All clarinet players should have a copy. I then found an old Holton C Clarinet which was indeed strange and difficult to play with cramped key work. So I was very gratified to find that the Amati C plays easily, has comfortable key work, although it has more of the early "clarino" timbre, and is very responsive. Mine is in very good tune. Throat tones are accurate, no need for right hand down. Tone is sweeter and lends itself to more emotion, with an especially effective p-ppp range, ideal for chamber music. It is too bad that the C Clarinet does not have more contemporary literature. I am using it when writing my own charts, and I note that others are using it to cover oboe parts. It would certainly be easier for a youngster to play than the Bb, both in terms of air stream and fingering, but alas, it doesn't fit very well in the school band. Just remember, it does not sound like a Bb in the Key of C-- it is an entirely different instrument with a sound all its own.

Excellent quality for the price

By Richard

Comments about Amati Model 351 C Clarinet:

After so many years of transposing "C." Clarinet parts in operas and symphonies I decided to purchse a "C" clarinet. I could not afford to spend much money. The Amati 'C" clarinet possesss fine wood and a solid key system. It plays well in tune. I use a Vandoren #3.5 V12 reed, slightly shaved down with the Amati mouthpiece that came with the clarinet. The mouthpiece is of good quality in my opinion. Overall the clarinet is of high quality for the money.

Great value clarinet!

By Harold Willhite

from So. California

Comments about Amati Model 351 C Clarinet:

For some time I've thought it desirable to be able to play with a piano without having to play by ear or transpose. Behold! There is an affordable solution. This little clarinet sounds terrific (especially in the lower register) and is very free blowing. I have had no problems at all and this appears to be a very good quality instrument. Don't tell any one, but I think it could sell for a lot more.

this amati c clarinet is tops.

By leif karlsson

Comments about Amati Model 351 C Clarinet:

This c clarinet is dynamite. Just got it today and it plays beautifully out of the box. I used to have one 3-5 years ago but was not totally happy with the tuning. I heard that they had made improvements and they sure have. The tuning using the mouthpiece that comes with it is great. I wished they made a hard rubber version. I use it in church to play the oboe part as we don't have an oboe player yet.
