I was called very recently to do Donizetti's "Don Pasquale." By the time I got the music, I had only two days to prepare an 82 page opera--more than 50% of which is in C. I'm not particularly proud to admit this, but my transposing chops are probably not what they should be. Forgive me Iggy. (God rest his soul.) Fortunately, I found a respected colleague who was willing to rent me his beautiful 105xxx series Buffet C clarinet. In the meantime I had been hearing some buzz about these Amati C clarinets--mostly about their affordability. Determined not to be again caught off-guard in the future, I decided to give it a try. Frankly, I never thought a horn this affordable--OK, let's not mince words--CHEAP could ever play very well. Man, I could not have been more wrong. I did a side-by-side comparison, and for me the Amati plays better than the Buffet. With the stock barrel, I checked it against a tuner at A441. The throat tones are beautifully in tune, and even though the notes above high A are a bit sharp, there's nothing that's unworkable. For me however, it was the way the horn blew--much more like my R-13 B-flat than even the Buffet C. Go figure. Also notable was the unexpected level of craftsmanship. By all appearances the clarinet is made of high grade wood: tight, even grain (can't say if it's granadilla or not). The excellent keywork felt comfortable under my fingers too. Finally, a special thanks to the person/s who put the clarinet in such outstanding mechanical condition. It arrived over night in absolutely perfect working condition, with well regulated keys and airtight pads. I used it that very night. I keep asking myself how they can sell a horn like this for so little. Hence the one line summary...

I've been playing this clarinet on and off on the rare occasions that I need a C clarinet (including occasionally substituting for a flute duing a wind choir or violin for a pit orchestra that I'm currently playing in). The craftmanship is really pretty good, and overall tone is competent, although unremarkable. Intonation is generally pretty consistent throughout the compass of the instrument's range-- except in the altissimo range. Notes above high D#/Eb tend to play extremely flat (almost a full half tone low). However, for the price, and unless you will be consistently playing in the extreme upper range of this clarinet, this C clarinet would be hard to beat.

Wonderful, warm little clarinet

By Syrena Gatewood

from Belfast, ME

Comments about Amati Model 351 C Clarinet:

I waited months for this C Clarinet and it was well worth the wait. It as a beautiful, warm tone that works perfectly with the string group I play with. It plays easily and changes register with no problem. I'm only an amateur player but it makes me sound good. I would recommend it to anyone seeking a C instrument for chamber use.

Surprisingly good

By Jeffrey Huntington

from Yellow springs, OH 45387

Comments about Amati Model 351 C Clarinet:

Real wood, excellent keywork, well regulated. An interesting tone, not unpleasant, but below professional orchestra standards. Some intonation problems, and almost unusable above high D--trick fingering required for every note. Don't buy this instrument to save your lip on the high notes. Still, a lot of instrument for the money and better than I had expected from a Soviet-era factory.

C clarinet

By Bj right

from Honolulu, Hi/ and many more!!!

Comments about Amati Model 351 C Clarinet:

I purchased one like this over three months ago now and I am hesitant to write anything about instruments especially ones in the upper level range!!!! Yes you read this correctly. I bought this one to cover for my main horn you know use it for the out going places not to worry about the main piece. WELL this one is my main peice now and to think of how much this one cost I'd pay three times as much and not look back at all. check it out you won't be sorry.

Amati 'C' Update

By Randy Glasner

from Arlington, VA

Comments about Amati Model 351 C Clarinet:

I have had mine for two years now. I play on it with my new Pyne ~M mouthpiece and recently had a barrel custom made for it by Wes Rice. The horn is awesome. I have played "Russian Easter" with it as well as several Mozart arias all with ease and people have commented on the appropriate tone quality particularly for the Mozart arias. The custom barrel has made the extreme high register so much easier to play and even better in tune.(it was pretty good before the barrel!) The custom barrel I am using is 1mm longer than the stock and is a composite material.

Where has this horn been all my life?

By Randy Glasner

from DC/VA/MD

Comments about Amati Model 351 C Clarinet:

I am thrilled so far with this little horn. I had never played a 'C' clarinet before. It came in great playing shape, good tight tenon fittings(metal caps)nice solid key action. So far I am using my Vandoren M-30 profile 88 A-440 mouthpiece and am pleased. I will know more in about two weeks when I play with an opera festival. Great buy for the semi-pro like me!

GOOD VALUE FOR THE PRICE

By Richard Holloway

from Pasadena, California--USA

Comments about Amati Model 351 C Clarinet:

I needed a C clarinet and an E-flat but did not want to pay a great deal of money on my budget. I purchsed (from Woodwind-Brasswind) the Amati C and E-flat Boehm clarinets (intermediate models) and am very happy with them. The C Amati plays well in tune with my Vandoren B45DOT mouthpiece. The E- also from Woodwind Brasswind. I use the Vandoren Rue-Lepic #3 1/2 with the B45 and the standard Vandoren E-flat reeds (strength #31/2). Tone produced on both clarinets is very good. I recommend both instruments highly. I received excellent service when ordering the clarinets using my credit card.

great horn if adjusted properly

By Ken

Comments about Amati Model 351 C Clarinet:

I wanted a C clarinet to avoid transposing when playing in a group setting. I asked ww&bw to shop check the horn before sending it out. The horn arrived in perfect shape with a "shop check tag" and I am very satisfied with the horn.
