The Grateful Dead's relationship with Alvarez began in the 1980s, when both Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir collaborated with Alvarez luthiers to create their own signature models. The team experimented with many shapes, from dreadnoughts to jumbos, and incorporated favorite attributes from both bandmates, like a Modulus neck and Tree of Life inlay. These designs culminated in Bob Weir's WY1BW, the result of years of fine-tuning, which Bob still plays today.

As part of Alvarez's 50th Anniversary they have created this special guitar (with two artwork options) to commemorate this long-time collaboration with the iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Famers. Grateful Dead enthusiasts will love the official artwork, applied to the cedar tops by an innovative screen printing process, and all guitarists will appreciate the fine construction, playability and tone of these instruments. The Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary acoustic features a solid A grade western red cedar top, screen-printed under a flawless satin finish.

Other appointments include custom mother-of-pearl "Lightning Bolt" inlays, the band's iconic Dancing Bear on the back of the headstock, a rosewood fingerboard and bi-level bridge and 12th fret lightning bolt inlay. Both models are constructed using the Alvarez FST2M hand-finished, forward-shifted, scalloped bracing system for optimal performance and response.

Inspired by classic Grateful Dead images, the custom artwork designs on these guitars have been applied using a custom screen printing process. Thanks to Mother Nature, each guitar top varies slightly in both grain and color, making every Alvarez Grateful Dead guitar a unique instrument, just like every Grateful Dead concert was its own unique experience.
Use the drop down menu to choose from Montage, with its psychadelic collage of some of the Dead's most beloved imagery, or Flag, which has a design inspired by the cover art from the out-of-print 2013 release, Dave's Picks Volume 8, a live album featuring the counterculture icons' performance at the Fox Theatre in Georgia in Novermber of 1980.

I don't usually buy guitars sight unseen, but I wasn't disappointed with this guitar by any means. As a piece of art, it is great; nice finish, cool graphics(montage). But it's qualities as an instrument are why I like to pick it up over my others. I did not have a guitar that was cedar topped, or a 000; this is both. Also, my other guitars all have pretty narrow nuts and necks, and this one is a little wider. I like that about it, it's thinner than say a Seagull S6,(haven't measured, but it feels thinner), but somewhat wider than my BR-160, CD-140SCE, or WP27SNS. It also has a little wider string spacing near the bridge; fine for strumming, or flat picking, but ideal for finger picking. The finish is top notch, good tuners, straight neck, good fretwork. It has a bone nut and saddle, but the pins on mine were plastic (now ebony). I was able to set it up with the action just right, and I have EJ16's on it, which sound nice. The tone on this guitar is very crisp and warm, just like you'd expect from a cedar topped guitar. It sounds great finger picked, under moderate attack with a flat pick, or moderate strumming. If you strum really heavy, you'll likely want to modify your technique with this guitar, it breaks up under heavy strumming, (typical for cedar). It is a stellar instrument for playing songs from Reckoning, which I play a few of on it. Anyway, buy it for the graphics, but I think you'll like playing it too, I really like mine! (I have a Silver Creek vintage 000 case for mine and it fits great! Fitting case for the guitar!)

Very well done screen printing and cedar top, makes the guitar. As a guitar, Alvarez could have used better hardware as the tuners and strap buttons are cheap. The neck is acceptable as the frets are fine, but the neck wood is a lesser quality and the rosewood is thin. The headstock is very plain. One neck inlay? Sound (due to cedar) and design are great. Acceptable guitar that they could have spent a few more yuan on and made great. You will have to set it up as it comes with truss and saddle needing adjustment.

Comments about Alvarez Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary Acoustic Guitar:

Love this guitar because the maker had small hands and built most of his guitars a little bit small to play for people with small hands like mine and I find it easier to play around the neck, allowing me to finger chords and do solos easier for an acoustic guitar. Do not know if guitar was actually hand made by Alverez like his early guitars he made but the quality of the guitar and design with logos really sets it apart from others and I like unique guitars. Bought this guitar to be able to show chord progressions with the student who has another guitar in hand and needs to see me show him progressions and fingerings while the student watches me and plays along with me and eventually reads what guitar tabs, chords in some structured arrangement I wrote down so he can play music on his own for a very long time. Kept running into problems and this little guitar will help give lessons easier and faster learning.

as a deadhead, I had to have this-and couldn't argue with the price. as a guitarist, I am pleasantly surprised at the ease of play and good sound. never will be mistaken for a high end acoustic, but does its job very well.

Comments about Alvarez Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary Acoustic Guitar:

I love this guitar. I have owned it since March. I would have given it 5 stars, but a week ago while playing I noticed that my bridge has cracked in a line across the peg holes. Needless to say I now have loosened the tension on the strings and can no longer play it. It had great sound and good playability. Not sure what to do about this hopefully it can be repaired.
