Overview

The Alvarez Artist Series AJ80 Jumbo Guitar is big, bright and beautiful. The solid A-grade Sitka tops with forward scalloped bracing lets this guitar really sing and the player experience is fantastic - you can really feel the energy of this guitar vibrate against your chest. Like most classic Jumbos the '80 has maple back and sides and all-natural, premium components throughout.

The term "solid top" of course refers to the soundboard of an acoustic guitar being made of solid wood, rather than being laminated. However, just because the top is solid, it does not necessarily mean the sound automatically benefits from this feature. The tone of the instrument only improves significantly when the whole guitar is built correctly to really release the energy a solid soundboard can generate. The Artist Series is built to do exactly this.

Each model is designed to get the best out if its components, and for them to work together to produce a tone and player experience, rarely found in affordable instruments.

The sound is warm, open and powerful, and both the treble and bass registers are clearly present and balanced in relation to each other. These guitars feel right and are exciting to play and responsive.

The solid A-grade Sitka spruce tops are hand selected from quarter-sawn wood. This ensures consistent quality, and its no secret better guitars are made from better wood. These tops not only look great but they are stiff and strong and finely grained. This allows them to be cut just that tiny bit thinner, which lets them dance a little more and produce a lot more vibration, and ultimately a richer tone.

All Artist Series guitars look stunning and their components are made of natural materials such as mother-of-pearl and abalone inlays, real bone saddles and nuts and rosewood appointments.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AJ80 Jumbo Guitar:

I was in the market for a jumbo after getting to record several tracks on a 1993 Gibson J-200. It belonged to the studio but it got me hooked on the look and feel of jumbo guitars.

Not wanting to drop 3k on a Gibson, I picked up an Epiphone EJ-200SCE. It was a beautiful guitar but lacked the acoustic tone I was hoping to emulate. The electronics were OK, but after three or four months of gigging 3-4/mo with it, I just couldn't get the live tone I wanted out of it. So a friend recommended I check out the Alvarez AJ80CE.

I got a chance to play one locally and while it absolutely sounded better acoustically than the Epi, I was underwhelmed with the electronics on it. I started thinking about how I could modify the electronics then I realized it would just be easier and cheaper to get the AJ80 and add my own electronics to it. So I ordered one.

First I'll say that while this guitar is not as ornate as the Epiphone, I'm floored by the fit and finish of this instrument. I loved the sunburst of the Epi, and the cool bridge and inlays, but what the Alvarez lacks in window dressing, it more than makes up for with it's tone and playability.

It came with light strings on it which sound quite good, but when I put a set of mediums (.013-.058) on it, it really came to life. After a few days of playing it unplugged, I put an endpin jack on it and added a LR Baggs M1 Active and it sounds awesome through my acoustic amp and into the PA. With only minimal tweaks of the EQ, I get a really robust and full sounding acoustic tone. I also swapped out the stock pickguard for a Taylor shaped one. I really love the look and sound of this guitar!

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AJ80 Jumbo Guitar:

I went to Guitar Center with the intention of buying the Epiphone EJ-200 Artist that was on sale. I was set on a "Jumbo" style guitar but was keeping the budget tight. The Epi was as nice as you could expect a low cost guitar to be, but I didn't think the sound was right probably due to the all laminate construction (including the top). After playing 1/2 the guitars in the store I really liked the Alvarez models I saw. I ordered my AJ80 sight unseen and am very pleased.
The sound is full and well rounded, the neck is comfortable, and the finish on the guitar is absolutely beautiful. The binding along the neck and body is perfect. When looking through the sound hole everything is sanded smooth, no excess glue.
I already own a dreadnought and a folk style guitar (both Seagulls) and this complements them perfectly. It is definitely louder than both with a nice full sound. Recommended if you are looking for something a bit different!

        AJ80

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AJ80 Jumbo Guitar:

My AJ80 has low-action with some high frets. Enough to turn a minor chord into a major. Installing an under-bridge pickup strip may be the answer. T will try to find an Alvarez Warranty Station close by. If no one is available I'll level the frets myself. Looks good, sounds good.
