Overview

Alvarez dreadnoughts are powerful and rewarding. This acoustic-electric model is fitted with the L.R. Baggs StagePro EQ and Element pickup to optimize live performance. With a body of rosewood, the AD70CE will accent the bass and treble just a little more...perfect.

After 50 years of making guitars, continual improvement through the use of emerging technologies, processes, and materials is still at the heart of Alvarez's culture. Alvarez guitars are constructed correctly in every sense, from raw material preparation to construction and manufacturing processes. Their tonewoods are carefully cured; components such as neck blocks and wood joints are carefully designed. The painting, sanding and polishing techniques used are continually researched and developed, and the tone is impeccably crafted and married to a stable, consistent and lively sound box.

This caring approach to development comes from one simple goal: To deliver the best guitars in the market at every price point, instruments that are truly amazing value and offer a fantastic player experience. Alvarez believes the multi-award-winning Artist Series is one of the finest solid top guitar lines in the world today and demonstrates their commitment to design.

Artist Series
The term “solid top” refers to the soundboard of an acoustic guitar being made of solid wood, rather than being laminated. However, just because the top is solid, it does not necessarily mean the sound automatically benefits from this feature. The tone of the instrument only improves significantly when the whole guitar is built correctly to optimize the energy a solid soundboard can generate. The Artist Series is built to do exactly this.

Each model is designed to get the best out if its components, and for them to work together to produce balance, lively projection and great response. These components include Alvarez's FST2 bracing system, bi-level rosewood bridge, real bone nut and saddle, great quality tonewoods and thin finish.

FST2 is a forward-shifted X brace design which means the axis of the X is closer to the sound hole to create a larger soundboard area allowing for more energy and vibration to be harnessed. Both the X braces and asymmetric tone bars are carefully scalloped. The scalloping design was the result of years of continual development in their Yairi workshops. The Artist Series sound and personality is open and powerful. FST2 also creates very good balance so both the treble and bass registers are clearly present and balanced in relation to each other.

Artist Series feel right and are exciting to play; no matter if you are strumming hard or picking lightly, the guitar will do what you ask of it. For a more focused sound with fewer overtones, choose a mahogany top. For power, go for Sitka. For warmth and response to a lighter touch, choose a cedar top. All of Alvarez's tops are selected by their team and graded independently of their suppliers. If it isn't deemed worthy, they won’t use it. Top quality improves as you move up the Artist Series models but all are stiff and finely grained.

Along with a more angled headstock, the Alvarez bi-level bridge increases string tension by making the break angle of the strings from the saddle to the top more acute. Improved string tension adds to the sound, feel and response, which are also heightened by the use of real bone nuts and saddles.

Artist Series also demonstrates their great finishing capabilities; the gloss models have a clear deep shine from a finish that is applied as thinly as possible, again to help optimize tone.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD70CE Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I got this guitar on a trade and I absolutely love it. I was looking for a new acoustic for a while and was looking for something like a Taylor, a Guild, or a Martin. However, this guitar has proven to be far better than what each of those brands have to offer in this price-range. I like the intermediate priced guitars that Martin, Taylor, and other big-name brands offer, but I don't like how none of them are made with solid woods or any authentic materials. They're all just laminates and other fake materials that just didn't feel right even though they sounded good. However, this Alvarez guitar is made with high-end, authentic materials. We're talking solid wood, well-working tuners, bone-nut & saddle, and other little perfections. Also, referring back to the big-name brands, the pickups weren't the greatest. However, the LR Baggs "Stage Pro Element" that's built into this Alvarez AD70CE is one of the best pickups I've ever heard. I still remember grinning ear-to-ear when I first played into a large sound-system. The signature Alvarez reinforced bridge is both practical and slick-looking. The little artistic details - such as the headstock logo & 12th fret inlay- give this guitar a particular beauty unlike any other. And yes, even though the guitar is Chinese, the craftsmanship is still outstanding (not just for a Chinese guitar - this thing is a beauty across the board). It sounds great - both acoustic & electric - it uses authentic materials, it looks beautiful, and I just can't put it down. Alvarez has really outdone themselves with this guitar and I am so blessed to have it.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD70CE Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I was searching for a Blue Ridge guitar but the
"open box" listing for this enticed me. It is exactly as described. It is brand new, same as
unopened quality. Everything about this instrument is exceptional. I do not believe the tone of a blued ridge or any other make could be
      any better.

7th Fret Buzzing on G and D strings

      By OrangeSmith

      from Columbus OH

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD70CE Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I originally gave this guitar 5 stars. I still like the feel and sound of the guitar, but about 10 days after my purchase the instrument started buzzing on the 7th fret of the D and G strings. Those are the only two frets that buzz. I submitted a message to Musician's Friend technical support and I'm waiting to hear back. In the meantime I've read the FAQ sheet on annoying fret buzzing. The strings are new. The guitar is new. I should not need to insert shims or spend additional money to fix a new guitar. Very disappointing.

      Bad frets...Two times...

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD70CE Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I got the first one and high E fret 13 was dead. I thought, this was a new guitar, I shouldn't have to fix it so I returned it and they sent another one. The next one came with a hump in the neck and 6 bad frets...

I adjusted the truss rod and put a shim in to raise the action which got me up and running, but I don't think I should have had to do that.

I've been buying sound equipment and basic hardware from Musicians Friend for years and have NEVER had a problem with any of it. This was my first guitar from them and because of this experience, I don't think I'll be buying another guitar from them. Hardware, absolutely! But not guitars.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD70CE Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This guitar felt great right out of the box. The neck is wider at the nut than other guitars that I've played, which for me was a good thing. The action was nice without needing to adjust anything. It's easy to get up and down the neck. The frets could be a little smoother at the edges, but it's really not a problem. I like the full sound, and it sounds acoustic when plugged in.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD70CE Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This is a nice guitar for the price. It was a re-stock and has some minor blemishes. The highs and mid come through strong however, the lows are a bit weak for a dread. Other than that, it's a well constructed guitar and will make a nice addition to my collection.
