Overview

The ˜66 models are beautifully finished and have a deep glass-like shine. The vintage sunburst on mahogany brings out the grain to create a warm look to match its tone. These mahogany top guitars have a focused sound with strong mids, great for recording and live work.

Alvarez's Artist Series is now "The Award Winning Artist Series" - winning competitions and receiving rave reviews in the States, Europe and around the world. It's a truly designed line of guitars that stands tall and sounds sweet in the solid top guitar market.

Hand-selected solid tops; forward shifted scalloped bracing, awesome tone and player experience¦.

The term "solid top" refers to the soundboard of an acoustic guitar being made of solid wood, rather than being laminated. However, just because the top is solid, it does not necessarily mean the sound automatically benefits from this feature. The tone of the instrument only improves significantly when the whole guitar is built correctly to really release the energy a solid soundboard can generate. Artist Series is built to do exactly this.

Each model is designed to get the best out if its components, and for them to work together to produce a tone and player experience, rarely found in affordable instruments. These components include the FST2M bracing system, bi-level bridge, real bone nut and great quality tonewoods.

FSTM is a forward-shifted X brace design. Both the X braces and asymmetric tone bars are scalloped. Moving the system forward allows for a larger soundboard, which is optimized with a solid maple bridge plate for both strength and energy.

The sound is warm, open and powerful, and both the treble and bass registers are clearly present and balanced in relation to each other. These guitars feel right and are exciting to play and responsive. Dig in and they shout right back at you, treat them gently and they whisper and respond instantly to the lightest strum or pick.

The solid ˜A' grade Sitka spruce and cedar tops are hand-selected from quarter-sawn wood. This ensures consistent quality, and its no secret better guitars are made from better wood. These tops not only look great but they are stiff and strong and finely grained.

Comments about Alvarez AP66 Parlor Acoustic Guitar:

This little guitar is fun! Sounds good, easy to play, seems well made, it will be great to see what tones can come out w/experimentation over time. Lends itself well to blues, folk and old time music. Don't expect expensive boutique guitar sound, but if you love good hogs, this is a fine choice in a parlor-sized instrument. Laminated back and sides seem not to affect the overall sound. Alvarez is a much nicer guitar than I'd once thought. Good stuff! Bought it myself and would do so again. In fact, I already did. Hint: Measure your guitar carefully for best case sizing or bring it in to your local shop to save time and aggravation. Some classical cases will probably fit; others not so well. Good luck!

Comments about Alvarez AP66 Parlor Acoustic Guitar:

I was looking for an all mahogany guitar, preferably in a smaller body, and this seemed to fill the bill. I started becoming more familiar with the Alvarez brand and their association with quality. While most of the Alvarez legacy lies with the Alvarez Yairi instruments, the Artist series which the AP66 is a part of, share many of the design features. This guitar did not disappoint.

The first thing noticeable is the caliber of the finish. The burst is beautifully done and as nice as any I have seen. The finish, while quite glossy and accentuating the wood grain, is also desirably thin. Many Asian imports tend to overdo the gloss, but the Alvarez has a degree of finish that I would expect on a higher priced instrument. Appointments are tastefully done, resulting in a very aesthetically appealing guitar that is not overly blingy. I also happen to like the clean fretboard, without markers other than the inlay at the 12th fret.

Tonally, this guitar is also very satisfying. Perhaps owing to the all mahogany body, the sound has a glistening quality, which I have heard on the Yairi instruments as well. Tone is well balanced with nice bass response relative to the body size. The neck is quite playable as well, with a satin finish. Alvarez calls this a parlor guitar, but I would liken this to a 00 body, which may be more alf a standard designation.

The only issue I encountered, for which I deduct one star, is that there was some fret buzz on the low E string. While I was able to tweak that away with a truss rod adjustment, I would have expected the US factory inspection to have set the guitar up a bit better. Perhaps the neck changed in shipping and storage, as there was no setup apparent from Guitar Center. However, I understood this to be the case when I made the purchase and, giving credit where due, Guitar Center shipped the guitar out super fast, even during the holiday season.

Overall, this is a great guitar to add to one's collection, regardless of experience level, For those who like the neutrality of mahogany, this guitar should be on your short list. Value for price is outstanding especially given how this guitar embodies much of the higher end Yairi line. I have only had this guitar for a few short weeks, but I have been drawn to it over several other classic American guitars, finding that this Alvarez holds its own very well. It is somewhat unique in its design and implementation. I have a newfound interest in this brand.
