Alvarez Artist Series AD90 Dreadnought Guitar (H78611)

An affordable guitar with a hand-selected solid spruce top, Acacia koa back and sides, and warm tone.

The Alvarez Artist Series AD90 Dreadnought Guitar is at the top end of the Artist Series offering. It has all the same wonderful appointments as all Artist Series models, such as the advanced scalloped bracing and solid A grade tops. But the ’90 is made with Acacia koa back and sides, which adds that something special to its tone. Warm, rounded and alive, it’s hard to put it into words but this guitar sounds incredible.

The term “solid top” of course refers to the soundboard of an acoustic guitar being made of solid wood, rather than being laminated. However, just because the top is solid, it does not necessarily mean the sound automatically benefits from this feature. The tone of the instrument only improves significantly when the whole guitar is built correctly to really release the energy a solid soundboard can generate. The Artist Series is built to do exactly this.

Each model is designed to get the best out if its components, and for them to work together to produce a tone and player experience, rarely found in affordable instruments.

The sound is warm, open and powerful, and both the treble and bass registers are clearly present and balanced in relation to each other. These guitars feel right and are exciting to play and responsive.

The solid ‘A’ grade Sitka spruce tops are hand-selected from quarter-sawn wood. This ensures consistent quality, and its no secret better guitars are made from better wood. These tops not only look great but they are stiff and strong and finely grained. This allows them to be cut just that tiny bit thinner, which lets them dance a little more and produce a lot more vibration, and ultimately a richer tone.

New Artist Series guitars look stunning and all of their components are made of natural materials such as mother-of-pearl and abalone inlays, real bone saddles and nuts and rosewood appointments.

  • Alvarez AD90 - Great Sound... Bold and Loud

As reviewed by Leonard Davis on 8/1/2013

The sound is nice and rich. Thick base and lows, brilliant highs, and great mids. The guitar sounds fabulous. I am very happy with the sound. I am also very happy with the details and extras that came on the guitar. There is very nice binding all the way around, and up the neck like on most of the higher end guitars costing much more. The neck feels like your playing an electric guitar because its thin and smooth, not like most acoustics that are wide and flat. There is mother of pearl accents throughout. Overall it looks beautiful and not overly done or gaudy... This model is made of Koa wood and it is beautifully figure. I would recommend anyone in the market looking for a high end acoustic.... You won't be disappointed. They sound great! They look great! And they play great!

  • Alvarez AD90

As reviewed by Leonard Davis on 7/24/2013

I just received the guitar. The guitar arrived in factory new conditions with no flaws. I just received it and can't believe how sweet it looks and plays. The Koa wood sings. There s a lot of punch, a nice tone and the look of the guitar is amazing. The binding and the mother of pearl accents make this guitar over the top. The neck is thinner than most acoustics, almost feels like an electric but looks like an acoustic. My AD90 is a fine instrument and I am extremely happy with it. I recommend it to anyone in the market for an acoustic On a 1 to 5 scale I give it a 5 with no hesitations..

  • Alvarez AD90 Shines!!!

As reviewed by Jeff Rosolio on 4/8/2013

Recently tried the Alvarez AD90 at a local guitar shop and was immediately impressed. I was told that they could hold their own with equivalent Yamaha guitars, but was skeptical at first. A few strums of the AD90 made me a believer. The Alvarez fit and finish are a slight notch below Yamaha's, but the playing experience and tonality are much better IMO. The set-up is excellent with low action, a natural bone nut and saddle, and rosewood bridge pins giving it a leg up on Yamaha's plastic parts for these three tonal drivers. The Solid Sitka Spruce top is purposely made a bit thinner than the competition giving it the ability to move more, thus producing a very vibrant, warm full tone, with plenty of thumpy bass, and impressive shimmer throughout the midrange. The Koa back and sides are laminated, but are beautiful and give the AD90 good projection. I ended up ordering on line from Guitar Center days after playing it in person. Now I can't wait to get home at night and start playing. Comes with D'Addario EXP strings which are quite nice as well.
