Alvarez Artist Series AD90 Dreadnought Guitar (H78611)
Availability:

An affordable guitar with a hand-selected solid spruce top, Acacia koa back and sides, and warm tone.

The Alvarez Artist Series AD90 Dreadnought Guitar is at the top end of the Artist Series offering. It has all the same wonderful appointments as all Artist Series models, such as the advanced scalloped bracing and solid A grade tops. But the ’90 is made with Acacia koa back and sides, which adds that something special to its tone. Warm, rounded and alive, it’s hard to put it into words but this guitar sounds incredible.

The term “solid top” of course refers to the soundboard of an acoustic guitar being made of solid wood, rather than being laminated. However, just because the top is solid, it does not necessarily mean the sound automatically benefits from this feature. The tone of the instrument only improves significantly when the whole guitar is built correctly to really release the energy a solid soundboard can generate. The Artist Series is built to do exactly this.

Each model is designed to get the best out if its components, and for them to work together to produce a tone and player experience, rarely found in affordable instruments.

The sound is warm, open and powerful, and both the treble and bass registers are clearly present and balanced in relation to each other. These guitars feel right and are exciting to play and responsive.

The solid ‘A’ grade Sitka spruce tops are hand-selected from quarter-sawn wood. This ensures consistent quality, and its no secret better guitars are made from better wood. These tops not only look great but they are stiff and strong and finely grained. This allows them to be cut just that tiny bit thinner, which lets them dance a little more and produce a lot more vibration, and ultimately a richer tone.

New Artist Series guitars look stunning and all of their components are made of natural materials such as mother-of-pearl and abalone inlays, real bone saddles and nuts and rosewood appointments.

Case sold separately.

  • Older style AD-90 impressions

As reviewed by jay vinton on 8/8/2013

I've always been an Alvarez acoustic guy as far back as the early 70's. You usually see glowing honeymoon reviews of newly bought instruments, but hardly ever one of the instrument as it has aged, or it's predecessor. I own an Alvarez AD-90SCK, the former model. I've had it now 12 yrs. It is still one of my favorites to play and it has held its construction, it's electronics, and it's playability through 12 Hawaiian seasonal changes with absolutely no ill effects. No tweeking of truss, no changing of saddle height, basically just playing and changing strings is all that has really been done to the guitar and it remains perfect except for the dings and wear from much fun and many notes. This would be important for those considering buying one and keeping it indefinately. The newer model can only be better. Gone is the florentine cutway, the dao sides and back are gone, and while they are full of reds, and purples and beautiful figuring, the new Koa choice is better. The once almost pine white solid sitka top has now aged into a golden warm color that is just amazing. All parts of the guitar from inlay, to rosette, to headstock inlay have remained perfect. The grover tuners have held up very well and show no sloppiness at all even though the strings have been changed probably a hundred times and with a powered winder. The T-600 system does a very nice if somewhat sterile reproduction of tone and sound and through a quality acoustic amp is very nice. The necks are closer to electric necks than they are the stuffy and hard to manage acoustic necks on many. I would say that every now and then along comes a mid priced guitar that you think you will keep and pass on, and this is definately one that will remain in my family long after. I use lots of Slack key tunings and then tune them down a full step. All that movement from slack to one step under standard has never had any type of effect on construction, neck or bridge. It's solid. If I were in the market for yet another acoustic, this would be it. Frankly, I'm thinking of breaking my rule and getting one even if I don't need it.

  • Alvarez AD90 - Great Sound... Bold and Loud

As reviewed by Leonard Davis on 8/1/2013

The sound is nice and rich. Thick base and lows, brilliant highs, and great mids. The guitar sounds fabulous. I am very happy with the sound. I am also very happy with the details and extras that came on the guitar. There is very nice binding all the way around, and up the neck like on most of the higher end guitars costing much more. The neck feels like your playing an electric guitar because its thin and smooth, not like most acoustics that are wide and flat. There is mother of pearl accents throughout. Overall it looks beautiful and not overly done or gaudy... This model is made of Koa wood and it is beautifully figure. I would recommend anyone in the market looking for a high end acoustic.... You won't be disappointed. They sound great! They look great! And they play great!

  • Alvarez AD90

As reviewed by Leonard Davis on 7/24/2013

I just received the guitar. The guitar arrived in factory new conditions with no flaws. I just received it and can't believe how sweet it looks and plays. The Koa wood sings. There s a lot of punch, a nice tone and the look of the guitar is amazing. The binding and the mother of pearl accents make this guitar over the top. The neck is thinner than most acoustics, almost feels like an electric but looks like an acoustic. My AD90 is a fine instrument and I am extremely happy with it. I recommend it to anyone in the market for an acoustic On a 1 to 5 scale I give it a 5 with no hesitations..
