Overview

Regardless of the application, give your mix a professional edge with 256 onboard 24-bit DSP effects designed in partnership with Alesis. Choose from room and space delays, small and large hall acoustics, plate and spring reverbs, flangers, chorus effects and more. The ZMX122FX offers 16 variations of 16 professional Alesis effects from which to build, tweak, and dial in your sound. There's even a footswitch input so you can bypass all effects at the touch, or stomp, of a button. (footswitch not included)

The ZEPHYR ZMX122FX accommodates dynamic, condenser, and wireless microphones in the first four channels, as well as keyboards, drum machines, and other instruments in the two stereo channel inputs. What's more, you can easily plug in your MP3 player, CD players, or audio from a DVD player into the CD/TAPE inputs. You also have two AUX sends that you can use to send streams of audio from your mixer to a digital effects unit, stage monitor, TV screen, or any number of sources. Choose the ZMX122FX as the audio central command for your live performances, home studio, or video suite.

High headroom, low noise
The ZMX122FX packs an enormous amount of features into a very compact space. This compact mixer brings the same standard of quality to your performances as Alto's top-of-the-line models. All Alto Professional ZEPHYR ZMX mixers are designed with high headroom and ultra low-noise, discrete mic preamps so you always get the full dynamic range of your mix every time.

Sometimes venues are dark and it can be hard to see what you're working with. Alto Professional solves this problem by not only color coding each section of the mixer, but also by using brightly colored knobs so that you can easily find what you need to adjust before you ever lay a finger on the mixer. Our blue, red, yellow and white pots are instantly easy to identify in dim lighting. LED indicators for output level, peak, and phantom power also assist in making sure that you have multiple visual cues that compliment everything you're hearing.

Features
  • 12 total inputs including XLR jacks with phantom power on channels one through four
  • Four mic input channels with gold plated XLR and balanced line inputs

I recently acquired a nearly new Alto ZMX122FX for a very good price, and I am really pleased with what it's delivering. Actually this was one of two options as far as small used mixers at my local GC. The other (a Beringer) was pretty dirty, but it did have more gadgets and a few more channels... Well, with a few months and some small gigs down, I can certainly confirm; I am very very pleased with my choice! Honestly the Beringer was alittle too featured (and I don't normally complain about such things). Lots of features on a big mixer handling complicated routings? Great! A small mixer with everything on it? Would have been fun years ago, but wisdom and experience tells me, the important features in a good layout generally makes for a much better experience, than all the features in a bad layout. In my mind, you only want to complicate a fist fully of channels so much, especially when you just need something quick. One thing this does have over the other is a power switch, kinda of a necessity IMO.

Well anyway enough rambling! To the point!
The Good:
-The sound: It it really clean and transparent, especially for the price tag.
Some hiss @ higher gains from the preamps, but not a problem if you set it accordingly. Still very usable; it's only a really high gain mostly
-Though clean and transparent, not stale and lifeless, doesn't flatten the imaging. Would be an excellent core to a budget studio
- the EQ is very well setup, and covers a lot of needs in just 3 bands
-The FX are very usable as well, they are tasteful and professionally executed. Not just a cheesy add-on to beef up the feature list. Clean and natural reverbs are always a plus in live sound. It really has a very nice quality FX, you might be surprised. I am so far. On a mixer this size the FX footswitch jack is going to be a useful addition.
-There is a nice balance between flexibility and simplicity here
-Includes phantom power (48v)!
-The size is great for small groups, sub mixing, and general tasks. It's compact enough that I often use it with one source just for the EQ alone , and a splash of effects.
-The layout is excellent in my opinion. Very simple, clean and to the point.
- Nice exterior design - Simple & classy. Doesn't look like a toy
- The design, to me, invites you to stick to making good music and clean sound, instead of juggling gimmicks and fighting with poor sound quality
-Durability seems good so far. I think it'll be around for the long haul. I transport it in a case (projector soft-bag) though. Has a nice solid feel to it on all counts. -Controls also feel smooth and solid
-I like the all rotary controls on a small mixer - keeps it compact, and also less prone to dust and dirt (a plus because this mixer doesn't really get coved because it is used quite often).
-One other thing I noticed, is there is no hum to speak of (a plus of the external supply). Also this mixer doesn't pick up a bunch of digital noise when using an internal laptop sound source.

The Bad:
-Wall wart. (does keep the weight and internal noise down in the mixer though)
-Made in China (quality control is good however)

Not the end all be all of mixers, but I bought this trusting that the look and feel would give me some indication as to the overall quality (hadn't even heard of Alto at the time). I have to say the purity of sound was not expected to this degree... I am pleased with this mixer. I will be keeping and eye on Alto for future equipment purchases...
Thanks for reading.

It just stopped working, I only used it once to test mic. positions for my conga set up, and I only used it at home inside. I only had it around a month and only the second time using it, it just stopped working. I first noticed when I first tried it that some of the effects weren't working, then I tried them again and they worked but some seemed to be kind of weak, I should have returned it then. Now I might be stuck with a broken mixer, I'm not sure if I've had this too long since the receipt has conveniently disappeared. I had smaller Alto that worked fine but I wanted more mic. inputs so I traded it for this one, and now that I need it for a gig it's no working.

This has good reviews, that's why I wen ahead and got this one. I'm thinking this is one of those hit or miss kind of brands.

      Well worth the money!

Comments about Alto Zephyr Series ZMX122FX 8-Channel Compact Mixer with Effects:

First let me say that I would knock off a half a star due to the flimsy power cord and connector, but there are no half ratings, so I leave at 5.

I started with a Behringer model similar to the specs of the Alto, which I used for several years, and always gave me good service. The down side is it did not have aux send, to adjust what channels go to the monitor send. Everything else about the Behringer was fine for my use (solo act - vocals, keyboard and sax). I bought a much more expensive Allen & Heath ZED10FX, but the high frequency response was not good enough, which required me to use the "shape" button on my Roland amp, which is what my mixer is plugged into. On a whim I bought the Alto, giving myself a 50-50 chance that the quality would be up to my standards. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.

Although I haven't used it on a gig yet, the tests at home show it to sound darn good. At less than half the price of the A&H mixer, and a smaller footprint, you can't go wrong with this mixer for an inexpensive mixer for live performance. As far as effects, I only use reverb, and found it to be as good as the A&H and Behringer (ok, maybe a bit better than the Behringer).

The pots have a little play when turning, but they seem to work fine, and hopefully they will hold up over time. The layout is easy enough to make quick changes at a poorly lit gig. Construction seems sturdy enough, with a blend of plastic and metal. Isn't very heavy, which is a plus for me, since I have this permanently mounted on my Roland amp.

Overall, I'm glad I bought this little mixer and wish I had tried it a few years ago.

Comments about Alto Zephyr Series ZMX122FX 8-Channel Compact Mixer with Effects:

I use this mixer primarily to record live musical performances, using four dynamic mics along with a direct line from the board. Works very nicely for that purpose. This is my second Alto mixer, and I am impressed with them in every respect. Nice and quiet, easy to set and use, controls respond as they should, and good solid construction. It's nice to have gain and level on each channel (4 mics and 2 stereo lines), and the eq and level indicators are superb. Haven't used the fx so far, however. Great mixer; very reasonable price.

Bought this (along with an Alto 10" monitor) for a series of band rehearsals at my home. Very happy with it so far. Good headroom and gain on both the mic and line amps. Clean sound and extremely intuitive. Effects aren't great, but for this price I wouldn't expect that. No way to know yet how rugged it will ultimately be, but at this point I can highly recommend it as a small format mixer.

I notice that the only negative comment was from someone using a BOSE system- the skinny tower? FACT: I have never heard one these that didn't sound awful. So, any mixer coupled with this system is not going to have a chance. Get rid of the BOSE and you'll fix your issue! I run mine with a pair of powered Mackie TH15 Thumps and people tell me it sounds crystal clear and beefy. I only wish it had one more XLR on it but otherwise it does everything I need it to do. I use it performing live with a duo which included 2 of us singing, keyboards and acoustic guitar. I also have a loop station as well so I pretty much fill it up. The effects are great to have too- especially outdoors.

We use this board for live performances. It's just two of us, we use 2 mics and several instruments. Acoustic guitars we use a di box to send to the board. Everything sounds good to me. We use the reverb for vocals and it works great. I will agree with other reviews that some of the effects don't seem to do anything, but for the price it's awesome!

Comments about Alto Zephyr Series ZMX122FX 8-Channel Compact Mixer with Effects:

I have owned about 10 (various sizes) of these so yes I did buy again and again. I currently have 3 as I'm winding down towards retirement.

I recently had reason to add one to someone elses Bose L1 system at an event. The owner told me it would not work because he had seen it on this site. He was running a Soundcraft SX and suggested I use that and re-rig our inputs during the breaks.
I pulled the jack plugs from his desk, plugged them into the ALTO and it was perfect.
To simplify the change over between our different parts of the event we ran his SX into a stereo channel on the ALTO and he was surprised he couldnt tell the difference. At the end of the event he bought it off me for his smaller jobs.

I have absolutely no idea how another user could describe it as anything but good. I know it's not a 'high end' unit but I have never been let down or been disappointed by them, otherwise I would not have owned so many.

I have included limited functions as there is no individual monitor function to aid setting up input gain but at the price I'm happy to accept it.
