Chicago jazz alto saxophone

By Tom G

Comments about Allora Chicago Jazz Alto Saxophone:

I purchased the Chicago jazz alto a few months ago First of all, I was really surprised by the quality of the case. The sax looked really nice, I liked the dark gold color. It was packed so well it took me awhile to take out all the cork wedges. I tried a couple of riffs and jazz favorites of mine and it played great, no leaks at all. The only litle thing I didn't like, was the position of the neck strap ring which tended to twist the sax sideways, but got use to it.All in all, a great sax for the price.

Many innovative features with a low price point. Highly Reco

Comments about Allora Chicago Jazz Alto Saxophone:

I want to give a little background prior to my review of the horn. I did a lot of research before deciding on purchasing the Allora Chicago Alto saxophone. I am very familiar with the company that makes this brand of horn, and I know of their history and respect their continuous quality improvements as I have witnessed over the years. I recently was in the market for a new Soprano, and I was in a local affiliated music shop and tested out several brands. The Allora Paris Soprano held in there in terms of quality, sound and key work with much more expensive horns I tested that day. It wasn't better, but I could not find a reason to spend 1-2k more for in my opinion a very comparable product. I purchased the instrument and have been pleased with it ever since. I have been working with my sons elementary band class as a volunteer. My only Alto is a straight alto which is a great sounding horn, but the issue was portability (so long!!) and also familiarity when demonstrating for the kids. So based on many YouTube videos, online forums and the known quality of the Allora brand, I decided on the Chicago Jazz. I couldn't be happier. Ok now the review!! Mouthpieces used Jody Jazz Jet 7*, and my very vintage Otto Link Tone Master 7* (will upgrade to a JJ DVNY in the future). I did not even try the stock mouthpiece (the facing was too small for me, but it looked ok) 1. The key work is very good as the horn has a similar feel to Yamaha action. The abalone finishes are a nice touch. 2. I do seem to like the rolled tone holes as it puts a nice spread on the sound (this is my first horn with rolled tone holes so the jury is still out for me). I was getting a big FAT sound from the lower registers and the high registers played very well. 3. I got a great Bright crisp sound with my Jet, and a nice Deep mellow tone with my Otto. So this horn seems to be able to hold its own for multi purposes. The video on this page featuring Dustin Yoes is very informative and gives a good feel of how this horn sounds. 4. This horn has extra bracing which I like as I feel it will add extra protection for the keys and has a nice rugged build feel as well. 5. The finish is a nice color and the hand engraving was very good (I will say the Allora Paris has more engraving, but that's all about looks and does not affect the playability). 6. The case is very nice. It is a hard plastic exterior and a form fitted interior which really cuts down on the size making the horn very easy to transport. The Case also comes with a lock and key set as well for added protection. I will note that you have to really decide what you want to bring with you in this case as the small pull out compartment barely fits my gear (Mouthpiece, neck strap, cork grease, sax swab, cleaning cloth and neck cleaner) Sounds like a lot, but that's about all you can fit in it. So overall, this horn is much cheaper than the Big four in price, offers an exceptional tone, great key work, nice features, appears very rugged, and comes with a very nice case. Really the only item I would suggest you consider adding is a mouthpiece that fits your playing style and desired sound. I hope this review was helpful and insightful. Sometimes the world of musical instruments gets very clouded and confusing when making decisions on what to buy. From my observations, this is a very well made horn that I would recommend to a friend, fellow player, etc.

Truly amazing and beautiful

By Ashley

from Argentina

Comments about Allora Chicago Jazz Alto Saxophone:

I am a 9th grader and have been playing the saxophone for three years now. I love it, and playing in my school has always been amazing. I've always wanted a saxophone and decided to buy this one for my birthday. The case is small and super easy to carry around, the color of the saxophone and keys are super nice, and it comes with a couple of accessories: -Mouthpiece, cover for it -Ligature -Neck strap The case is a really nice size and has a small space in the bottom where you put your accessories which is very smart. You are also able to lock the case, it comes with two keys. If you choose to buy it, remember to buy anything else that's not in the list It sounds super nice, and has a really full sound when I play it. I would really recommend it to anyone that has been playing for a while but does not want to buy anything that is too expensive or pro for them. I did have some problems with the shipping, because they had not informed me beforehand that the saxophone was out of stock for a while, but it was all dealt with very well.

Great tone and intonation for the price

By Jon Hand

from Rochester, NY

Comments about Allora Chicago Jazz Alto Saxophone:

I teach a small saxophone studio (12-20 students) outside of Rochester for the last 10 years. Many of my students play jazz and classical styles, so I'm always looking for a horn that can do both. Don't let the name fool you - this horn can certainly do both sides of the saxophone. The rolled tone holes give some warmth to the tone and provide very fluid and natural key action. The red brass body gives an added color to the sound that most teachers, performers, and audience members will appreciate. The mouthpiece that comes with it however is garbage (as most stock mpc's are). I would recommend an Vandoren AL3 for classical or Meyer/Jody Jazz hard rubber piece for jazz. Surprisingly, the horn plays pretty well in tune. Most horns I've tried at this price point have major tuning issues in the extreme registers (high palm keys & lower stack). The biggest surprise is the case, just WOW! A very durable, hard case that has a hidden compartment for added space. The efficient design of the contoured case make traveling with the horn a breeze. I would recommend this horn for most any level of saxophone player. Teachers - I will be recommending this horn along with the other Allora saxophones to most of my intermediate and advancing students. Cheers!

Allora Chicago Jazz Alto Saxophone

By Jose Isaias DePaz

from Randleman, N.C.

Comments about Allora Chicago Jazz Alto Saxophone:

I just got the Allora Chicago Jazz Alto Saxophone March 12,2013. I opened the box and the first thing I noticed was the case, very stylish and fitted. Pretty good quality and it has four latches and they secure well. It also comes with two keys in a plastic little baggy, the latches have key entries so you can lock them, very nice feature and a must have for a case. I opened it and took the plastic off and wrapping paper and I was amazed at the saxophone and how it looked. The color is nice and so was the case from the inside. Before assembling just a note that the pads a shut and not open, you have to find the places that have pieces of cork and take them off. Picked up the saxophone and noticed the pearls on the saxophone look sweet on the Lacquer finish. The big bell is awesome and the engraving is something gives the saxophone a very nice look. Yes, this saxophone does have "Rolled Tone Holes," and the pisoni pads as mentioned. Also has a key guard. The feels of the keys is great, make sure to play the keys since its new you have break into it as I say, "SETTLE." The octive key is nice too. The neck nice as well, I wish the metal part that has the octive key pad would have a letter or logo on it that would be nice. Cork is already there on the neck. Now, the case has a hidden compartment that you take off by pulling the string. Inside, there should be a baggy with two keys for locking the case, a neck strap for the saxophone and saxophone mouth piece with metal ligature and mouthpiece with guard for it. I assembled the saxophone and mouthpiece, I noticed that the ligature was small for my Vandoren Java strength-4 reed maybe I'm just using a reed too thick or I need a different ligature. Put cork grease before putting on mouthpiece to neck and tune. I played the saxophone and the saxophone does have a great tone and the low notes do speak out and also the higher notes sound right where they should be.... the sound is not thin, its full and centered. Overall, this saxophone for its PRICE.... it cannot be beat. You get so many pro- features that won't be disappointed. I do recommend, maybe buying a new mouthpiece for a different setup option and sound and ligature as well to accompany it to get the best out of this saxophone. Maybe Jody Jazz Mouthpiece with a leather or something similar to that as a ligature. I Love this saxophone and I hope this helps to those who are you undecided or curious.
