Few mistakes, good transcriptions

By Dylan Hoover

from Las Vegas, NV

Comments about Alfred The Drum Techniques of Rush Songbook:

Alright, so you don't have to go digging to find out what songs are on here, they are: The Trees and La Villa Strangiato from Hemispheres; The Spirit of Radio, Freewill, Jacob's Ladder, and Natural Science from Permanent Waves; Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, YYZ, and Limelight from Moving Pictures; Xanadu from Exit...Stage Left (yes, it was originally from A Farewell to Kings, but the transcription is of the track from the live album); Subdivisions and New World Man from Signals; and Distant Early Warning and Between the Wheels from Grace Under Pressure. Now, you may have noticed that I did a review for another Rush book not too long ago, and I thought that it was okay, but it had quite a few mistakes. This book is completely different. This book misses a few minor things like ghost notes and a few percussion parts like the opening and the glockenspiel parts of Xanadu. I consider Hemispheres to be Neil's greatest work in terms of drumming ability, and I was shocked to find out that the transcriptions of that were pretty much spot on. On Spirit of Radio, I noticed some things that the other book didn't cover, and they were right as well. This book is definitely a must buy if you want to learn some of Neil's more complex drum parts.
