Comments about Alfred Teach Yourself to Play the Guitar Book/CD:

I'll start off by saying I'm a very tolerant person, one who keeps his mind open for all things and tries not to immediately reject something. Even then, I have had a hard time liking this book. The book's first section was probably the most useful, though not terribly in depth. It explains some background on guitars such as origin of the instrument, then the different types of guitars like classical, accoustic, electric, etc. It also shows the correct hand positions for playing. The only problem is, this is a book, not a teacher, so if you're doing something wrong there's no one to correct you. The book is very long and boring. Each new section introduces a new string until you have played on all 6 strings. This is very frustrating and tiresome, as the exercises consist of "pluck, pluck, pluck, pluck" of one string, then later adding fingerings. Not only is it boring, it is also rather difficult for a beginner to play like this. The correct way to start guitar playing is chords, not picking individual notes. This will only confuse and frustrate the student. There is a chord chart in the back of the book, which would be okay if not for the fact that half the chords are incorrect or incomplete. I definitely do NOT recommend this book. Get a teacher, that is the best thing if you are a beginner.
