A dog, cat, and alligator help kids learn guitar.

Alfred's Kid's Guitar Course is a fun method that teaches kids to play songs on the guitar right away. Each lesson is explained in plain language that's easy to understand, with 3 irresistible guitar experts leading the way: a clever classical dog, one cool jazz cat, and a friendly alligator who loves the blues. They keep attention focused by pointing out what's important on each page and they help students learn by making music fun! Students hear how the music should sound by listening to the included enhanced CD, which contains additional tools when played on a PC, including a chord dictionary and guitar tuner.

Book 1 teaches basic music symbols, how to read chord frames and strum 3-string chords, and reading the notes in 1st position on the first three strings to play simple single-note melodies. Ages 5-9.

When kids are ready to move on, the optional Book 2 will help enhance their newly learned skills while building additional ones. (See accessory box on this page.)

  • Not the easiest guitar method for children

As reviewed by Kelly Weeks on 4/17/2012

I used this book for about 5 years in my own teaching and then I decided that it was not a good method for children. The approach that this book uses is much too difficult for young children. For example the first song is called "Three Blind Mice" and its purpose is to teach the child how to play a C Major chord. I haven't had much student success at all with teaching chords to young beginners. It's almost physically impossible for a child to play a C Major chord in their first lesson. The interesting thing is that this book proclaims that it is the easiest method for children to learn the guitar. The approach of learning the guitar by playing chords may be appropriate for adults and teenagers but not for young children. So what does a parent or music teacher do when their child/student can't play the first song in the "easiest guitar method for children?" This question motivated me to create my own book called "Kasey's Guitar Jams for Kids." I have found that it is a much more engaging and fun way for children to play the guitar.
