Overview

The compact Alesis iO2 EXPRESS audio-recording interface is ideal for home studios and portable recording setups. The 2-channel USB interface for Mac and PC-based systems enables you to record at up to 24-bit resolution for input into virtually all DAW, recording, and performance software.

The Alesis i02 EXPRESS recording interface is small enough to comfortably fit into your mobile recording rig, laptop bag, or backpack, yet it contains high-quality components and circuitry suitable for the studio.

Flexible recording and playback
The i02 EXPRESS interface's discrete-design preamplifiers and true 48-volt phantom power ensure that you capture microphones' complete signal. High quality analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters ensure that every detail of your session or performance gets recorded - and played back on your monitoring system. It's class compliant, so you can use the plug-and-play Alesis iO2 EXPRESS with virtually any computer.

The iO2 EXPRESS is USB bus powered so you won't need to carry a bulky power supply, and its performance is optimized for minimal laptop battery drain so you'll be able to track long sessions and gigs remotely.

Complete iO
The iO2 EXPRESS has 2 input channels. Each channel has an XLR microphone input, a 1/4" TRS insert for external effects units, and a 1/4" TS jack that works with line-level sources and can accommodate direct connection of guitars.

The Alesis iO2 EXPRESS sends and receives 2 audio channels on a single USB cable for simple, universal interface. You can monitor your sessions on any studio monitoring or other loudspeaker system via dual 1/4" balanced outputs. For remote tracking and alternative playback, the iO2 EXPRESS has a 1/4" TRS headphone output.

The iO2 EXPRESS features traditional MIDI In and Out jacks for playing and controlling software with keyboard and pad controllers, workstations, and other MIDI-compatible instruments.

Level management
Each channel has a gain trim control, and there's a master level control for optimal gain staging. When monitoring on headphones, you'll appreciate the dedicated volume control.

You can also visually monitor levels and operation using the tricolor, stereo metering tree and lighted status indicators.

Complete the package
The Alesis iO2 EXPRESS comes complete with a copy of Steinberg Cubase LE digital audio workstation (DAW) software. Cubase is one of the most popular DAWs in the world thanks to its intuitive approach to composing, recording, editing, and mixing.

In addition to the included software, the Alesis iO2 EXPRESS is compatible with virtually all audio and MIDI software.

I purchased this interface so that I could use it as part of a mobile setup. The Alesis iO2 Express lacks the solid construction and digital i/o of the original iO2. While the Alesis iO2 Express feels kinda plasticy and lightweight, it seems to be built ok. The iO2 Express comes with a USB cable, a quick start guide and an installation DVD for Cubase LE (Win and Mac OS supported). I did not install the Cubase because I want to run the hardware in Cakewalk Sonar Home Studio 7 so that whatever I produce will be compatible with Sonar 8.5 Producer. To install the hardware you simply plug the interface into the computer via the USB cable to install the generic drivers. When I tested recording vocals using the generic drivers, latency was a big issue. The quick start guide suggests using ASIO4ALL drivers to deal with latency issues--consider installation of ASIO4All a must do item (http://www.asio4all.com). Once you install the ASIO4All drivers and configure them correctly within your DAW, the Alesis iO2 Express interface is quite usable for 24 bit recording with low latency. I give the Alesis iO2 Express 4 out of 5 stars. The unit lost a star for the plastic construction and the lack of a dedicated ASIO driver for the Alesis iO2 Express. Despite its shortcomings, for under $100, the Alesis iO2 Express is a very good value for a USB bus powered interface with 1/4 inch inputs and outputs, 2 XLR mic ins with 48 volts phantom power and midi in and out. Whether you are looking for an entry level 24 bit audio interface with "big boy" inputs and outputs or a second interface for a laptop, you'd be hard pressed to find a better value with all of these features.

I purchased this unit to replace my EMU 1212 sound card which would not work on my new computer with Windows 7/64. The fist module I received had to be returned because it would only record in mono. That one was replaced with a new unit that seems to work just fine. It sounds pretty good when monitoring through headphones, but when the output is connected to a mixer or even directly to a power amp it produces a very annoying high pitch noise (reminds me of my tinnitus), even with all levels at zero, the noise is there. Fortunately the noise does not seem to get into the recordings but it is always present when monitoring through the speakers.

Comments about Alesis iO2 Express Audio Interface:

I am quite familiar with Microsoft programs and video games and I wasted several hours a couple of times to try to set up this software on my Windows 10 laptop, and the sight would not let me do it . So actually, I have to give this 0 stars because I put it away in the closet .

Product worked for a minute and a half then turned itself off. Connected to another laptop and experienced the same problem. Disappointed in Alesis which I have both the QS7 keyboard and the SR-16 drum machine (excellent products over 10 yrs old). Really disappointed in Guitar Center for selling a product which has been identified as faulty then not accepting returns. Made me rethink doing business with Guitar Center

Comments about Alesis iO2 Express Audio Interface:

I'll abbreviate this as I was kicked out when adding the final period to my lengthy statement. Controls are extremely touchy and pots have very little useable range. Condenser mics have to be turned up almost all the way. The Cuebase software waveform (Cuebase installation nightmare is another post) Waveform looks like overdriven splatter, but playback is fine. A sleigh turn of the pot up or down, however, gives no signal or a truly splattered signal. BTW, it won't power a high end Schoeps mic but works fine with a cheap sony condenser.

BIG PROBLEM - device no longer works with mu recording computer after upgrading to latest Yosimite Mac OS. Service was very helpful, telling me to use a different computer. This is my expensive field laptop. Come on Alesis, this is a current product and current OS on a common computer. You should have drivers that make this work.

Comments about Alesis iO2 Express Audio Interface:

I'm not sure why this unit has so many bad reviews. I've had mine for almost a year now and I've never had a problem with it. It's quiet, (unless you crank the gain all the way up), it's lightweight, and it's surprisingly sturdy. I've traveled with it in my backpack and even had it in checked luggage on a plane. Also, I saw in another review that someone got shocked by metal knobs, the knobs are made of plastic now, so that's not a problem. I track into Reason and it works well. It's completely worth the $100.

            ATTENTION MAC USERS

Do NOT buy this. If you plan on using Cubase with it it won't work on Mac. You have to download a driver for it to sound good and you can't because it's only for PC. I plugged it into Garageband and there was really bad hissing. Bottom line is this is way to expensive for how it works in a studio.

I bought this unit to use at home to record songs and for my son to do voice overs on his projects. I found it's easy to use, has good sound quality and a great price. What more could you ask for? We use Steam for its DAW, very easy to manipulate and they work well together. I've had an Alesis drum machine for about 18 years and it still works so I have no quality worries with this unit.

I am running an older PC with Windows XP. The Alesis plugged right in. Cubase 5LE installed easily. At first, Cubase was very slow. After I went on Steinberg's website and downloaded the drivers I needed, everything has been running very quickly. There are lots of free VST's and plug-ins available on the internet that work great.

The interface works well, sounds very transparent and once you figure out Cubase, is very powerful.

The interface has 2 channels and has MIDI in and out as well. Does not have RCA or SP-DIF connectors, but that's to be expected at the price point.

My first trax were playing back about a half step higher, out of tune, couldn't figure out the problem. I just needed to set the bit rates to match up: drivers, iO2 and Sonar program I'm using, the iO2 is 48k and 24 bit. My drivers work on 16 bit setting and I was also able to get the iO2 to work in the 44k CD default setting!

I got this for my girlfriend so she can play piano and sing at the same time and record all of this on the computer. It does a great job at what it is supposed to do. It took me quite a while to figure out all of the little settings and how to make the sound come out of the right places and what not. But once I figured it out its great. Would definitely recommend to a friend. But just warn them on the difficulty of setup when using and sit down with them for quite a while to teach them what buttons to click.
