Fantastic product. Just what I needed.

By MARK BERRY

from Portland OR

Comments about Alesis iO Dock Pro Docking Station for iPad:

The Alesis iO Dock Pro will allow you to record just about any instrument directly on to your iPad with crystal clear sound quality. I made a few songs using using my bass guitar, acoustic guitar and condenser mic and I couldn't believe how great they sound. I haven't found anything wrong with it yet.

does NOT support MIDI SysEx

By JOSEPH JANOSKI

from ohio

Comments about Alesis iO Dock Pro Docking Station for iPad:

The title says it all. I thought it was just my iPad app or my settings but after I can't bring it back to GC I find it doesn't support SysEx which the apps I use need. Now SysEx is part of "Core MIDI" and it just doesn't support it at all. Just check the Alesis forums and you will find out this has been a known problem for more than 7 months. At first I thought they would fix it but they haven't.

Almost perfect for me

By Matt Sweet

from Hammond, Wi.

Comments about Alesis iO Dock Pro Docking Station for iPad:

My main musical focus is " open mic's " this is awesome for recording live performances off the mixing board or by mic'ing the main speakers! I wish they would have put some kind of a power indicator light on the face. I didn't realize it was off once and missed a great performance! Bummer! Other than that I love it. IMPORTANT!!!!! YOU MUST TURN OFF THE CROSSTALK PROTECTION In your iPads garage band settings NOT through the app itself!! This will eliminate the terrible noises that will be on your recordings. And yes I said turn crosstalk protection OFF! The only other bad thing is the manual is worthless and Alesis's website isn't much better. Somewhere I read that this will run on batteries, this is not true. Or I'm too stupid to find the battery door, which is entirely possible lol! Enjoy!

Great Interface

By Allan Zieser

from Hiawatha, Iowa

Comments about Alesis iO Dock Pro Docking Station for iPad:

Ok, if you are looking for an interface to get better quality sounds into your Ipad this is the device for you. It has a variety of ports with individual volume adjustments plus a separate set of output jacks as well as a video out RCA plug. A bit of a warning though, this device comes with no apps, nor is there a really good write up on the Alesis site. However They do mention using StudioTrack on the site. I would avoid this app, first of all it is 19.99 and has some serious latency issues. The delays on the notes are horrible using this software. Because of StudioTrack I almost returned this device. Now I have found that the app MultiTrak DAW is an amazing solution to this problem, it has the ability to go to 24 tracks with a paid upgrade, 8 tracks without. MultiTrak DAW has no latency issues at all. If you like the flexibility of the old school digital recording software for the pc then you will find MultiTrak DAW to be a great tool when used with this device. I have been recording grooves off of my Roland V-Drum kit and This device combined with the above mentioned app has proven to be an amazing asset. I have recorded up to five minute multi-tracks so far with no problems at all. Overall if you have an iPad and don't wish to spend six hundred on a Tascam recorder, of equal value then this is a great option. Be aware of the lack of written documentation from Alesis on this device and look to the forums online for assistance. I have been using this with my iPad one and I am loving it! If you have an iPad 2 you will need to order the free adapter off of Alesis's site, before you can use this. So expect some delays in getting started. I also purchased a second set of headphones with 1/4" plug for use with this as well. This device also charges your iPad while you have it on. The only real issue is that you have to have a 110 volt power supply wherever you go with this device as it has no battery support. Also this device does not work with the app Amplitude, but only because amplitude uses the headphone jack instead of the apple port on the device. So it is really an issue with Amplitude not using the current standards and not an issue with this interface at all.

Great product

By Adam Luckhaupt

from Reynoldsburg, OH

Comments about Alesis iO Dock Pro Docking Station for iPad:

At the time of writing this is as much a review of Garage Band as ioDock. As hooking up ioDock and figuring out that usb power wasn't enough to push midi into the ioDock, I was off and running. I hooked up ioDock in my studio and ran the two outs into my main mixing board. I plugged in my main midi synth controller and I was off. This product is simple and stable, especially when using with Garage Band. As far as amplitude, I'm not interested. Give Garage Band a shot because the guitar sounds are amazing, and I'll use NI Guitar Rig 4 for sounds that are not currently in Garage Band. As far as sound quality, I was very impress. No weird hissing or buzzing. As far as other apps (and I'm a soft synth junkie), they work fine so far (Sunrizer, iMS-20, Crystal Synth, miniSynth PRO, Sylo Synth). This product will allow me to take portability to the next level, and I'm sure that tons of other apps with continue to enhance the process. I'm pretty excited.

Sticking/dropping MIDI notes

By Jeff

from Virginia

Comments about Alesis iO Dock Pro Docking Station for iPad:

The main reason I purchased this was for MIDI and hooking up a mic to my iPad 2, primarily using GarageBand. When I first set it up (I don't have the insert yet, so I placed a tablet of paper underneath the iPad 2 to make it more snug), connected via MIDI to my Roland keyboard and opened GarageBand, the MIDI worked and I was excited. However, it didn't take long for me to notice that randomly (but often), certain notes would stick down after being played. For example, when playing one of the organs, I'd be playing and all of a sudden notice some annoying hanging note still coming through even though I wasn't playing that note any more. The note sticks down until you open up another instrument. There were also instances where notes wouldn't even play at all when I pressed them. Finally, roughly 1/5 of the instruments/synths didn't produce ANY sound when I tried to control them with my keyboard. It's like the MIDI connection just disappeared, but only for those specific instruments. I don't know if this is a GarageBand issue or if the IO Dock is to blame. I haven't tried hooking up a mic or guitar yet, but the hanging/dropped MIDI notes issue makes the IO Dock unusable for me. I've read that this is a widespread problem people are having. For such an expensive and hyped-up device, you'd think they would have noticed such a glaring problem before releasing it to the masses. Even worse, I contacted Alesis via their website almost a week ago to alert them of this issue and to ask whether there is some kind of update in the works to fix it, and I still haven't heard a word from them. Apparently they think this problem will just magically go away. I'm at the point where I'm about to return the IO Dock. If it doesn't do what it's supposed to do and they won't even let me know if they're addressing the problems, why should I hold on to what's essentially an expensive iPad charger?

For the guitarist....

By Steve

from Benton, AR

Comments about Alesis iO Dock Pro Docking Station for iPad:

I returned mine. It's cool...and it's a fantastic concept, but for the guitarist it's a little more complicated. I think keyboard players will be in heaven with this and the ability to write music anywhere. But for us axe pickers, we currently have two "big players" in the app store to record guitar with. Those are IK Multimedia's "Amplitube" and Agile's "AmpKit+". You should know right off the bat that Amplitube doesn't work with this interface. At all. So that's out. And AmpKit is notorious for feedback issues (hence the noise gate on every effect). Now you would THINK this interface would completely stop that. It does not. The feedback is still rampant and nearly impossible to get a clean signal. I should mention that it does a good job in Garageband. But you're very limited on effects there. One more thing worth mentioning: Sometimes you get a key sticking issue while using a MIDI device. Do a little Google homework and you'll find this is a substantial problem with lots of folks. And last on the gripe list: No REGULAR usb midi device hookup (for your keyboard). Gotta go buy a different cable for the "type B" input.
