My last review I stated that the unit would stop recording when it felt like it at different intervals. I tried a different card and that did NOT solve the issue. So.. frustrated I exchanged for another at the store. I decided to test it while it was charging via USB on the computer. I hooked it up to the tower USB, and turned the video recorder on, and went to bed. This morning, it showed that it recorded 4:51 hours of video. (pitch black with snoring sounds)... So obviously the battery had not been fully charged enough. But I wasn't satisfied with this. So I let the battery charge up to full capacity again, and I have this unit at work as we speak video taping. I am now at 4:20 hours. Therefore I think my issue with Stop recording on it's own was due to my lack of charging the battery to full capacity. I also wanted to add to the review of the gentle man that had the card get stuck in the unit. When I went to exchange the unit, they must have given me an older unit because it had a different SD card, which, once I pressed in, DID get stuck, and I had to have the GC rep pull out with his fingernail. Unhappy, he gave me another new one. Now I noticed that if you look in the slot where the card goes, there is a date, I am assuming that these are the mfg. dates. The new ones I got that didn't have a prob with the card in the slot were both stamped 08/04/2010. The one that had the card slot problem and different mfg card was stamped 6/?/2010. I am assuming that Alesis had complaints and rectified this issue. So I am back to liking this unit about 90%. I am only saying 90% and giving 4 Stars, because I have not used it in a real bar setting with a band, or in different lighting situations. But I don't expect that the video will be stellar in low light. But to be honest.. the most important part is the sound, and if you can make out our band.. bonus. :)

I wrote two other reviews, I gave this unit test after test, return after return, to just give up, especially after a source confided in me at the place of purchase that they have seen a ton of returns on this unit. First Unit: Would stop recording when it wanted to. Returned for new unit. Second Unit: SD Card went in, couldn't get out. Power button difficult to push on. Also would stop recording at will. Returned for new unit. Third Unit. Would again stop recording when it wanted to on fully charged battery. Assumed that maybe the battery couldn't handle long recordings (although it would stop at various times). Bought a usb power adapter. Problem with this was you can't use a power adapter while using the tripod mount..morons put it right next to each other. Cheap fix was a long bolt to extend the mount, which made the unit wobbly.. not good.. But.. Was able to record 4 hours seamless video without a drop. Yay. Next issue I brought vids into pc using program and noticed synchronization issues between video and audio. I tried several things then when back and watched the video on the unit itself and you could see it going out of synch on the unit. Another issue was that you could hear some "skips" in audio.. like a CD was bumped.. So I did another test recording my drummer while watching the counter.. and sure enough, I watched the counter skip numbers several times. I have brought this unit back as I think, 3 strikes, your out!!! Alesis should spend a little more time making a quality unit than spitting out a pile of doggy doo. As you can see by my reviews I gave this unit a fair shake, I WANTED it to work, and I am sad that it would not. I also contacted tech support, and two times I got no response, 1 time, they said they couldn't duplicate my issue in their office. It is obvious that Alesis did not do any type of test market before putting these out. If you buy this, YOU WILL be the guinea pig my friends. If you have a 30 return policy, be SURE to test yours up down and backwards to make sure you can get your money back if it fails to meet your expectations.

Lesis Video track Rules!!

By PANTHERCOAST

from renton wa

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

I've had this thing a week, and its Great! Sit on your bed (or whatever) and vid yourself playing Gee-tar, then load it onto Youtube with a press of a button. Its so easy to use, even a drummer could figure it out (sorry, no offence) I took my daughter (she's only 5yrs old!) to GC and filmed her playing drums, and BOOM! 30 minutes later, she's on youtube! I've made a lot of "Mini Movies" with my $700 Sony DVD Camcorder, then I tried to put them on Youtube, but to no avail. That stupid camcorder is worthless. So now, i'm gonna transfer all my movies onto my Lesis and load 'em up. I'll play my DVD (from the camcorder) on the DVD player, then film them with the Lesis GET THIS THING, ITS WELL WORTH IT!! ROCK OUT!

Awsome product

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

I wanna start off by saying that this camara met all my expectaions! I had purchesed a zoomh3 about a month ago and used it once because the video was so dark but it did pull through in the audio part. I actually returned it and had been looking for another recording device well i found it! I just purchesed the alesis video track on 10-22-10 and used it the following night to record the band i run sound for and was VERY pleased. The video was much brighter and the audio was excelent!! This Alesis product blowes the zoomh3 out of the water. I can say if they ever make this a HD product i will be first in line to buy one!

Don't waste you time!

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

Ok, SO I bought this item on BF, and thought it would be a decent mini corder for it's intended usage. NOT. This thing is no where near as good as the cheapest HD cam from FLIP. Audio can be fixed easily, but the unit constantly freezes, and the controls are ridiculous. DO your self a favor and get a different camera from Sony, at least you'll get HD, and for Less. Even at the Super cheap deal I got, it is NOT worth it, I'm sorry to report. Alesis should be ashamed selling such junk!

It's nice, but I have an issue..

By Jessica

from Minneapolis, Minnesota

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

I do like this unit, sound is great, video is ok (better than a camcorder!).. but this product states that with the 2gb supplied SD card it can recorded over an hour of video. Upon putting SD card in unit, the counter only shows 42:48 avail. Furthermore, it will not continuously record that whole timeframe. It will stop recording at sporadic times, 34 min, 20 min, 8 min, 15 etc.... I am wondering why this is happening? I can't seem to find an answer on the net. And I am not sure I want to buy a 16gb just to test because if that is not the problem, I have thrown some money out the window..

The worst piece of junk I have ever seen

By Aplus

from Portland, Oregon

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

They have to be kidding. Just like the other reviews said, very poor sound, picture, controls, quality and it is way over priced. Junk or a toy at best. Stay away from this one. I am taking mine back in the morning after one day. Wow I used to like Alesis and I have owned many pieces of their gear over a lot of years from the HR-16 drum machine to synths. But now I am going to think twice about buying anything from them again.

Problem with mine

By Dave Lange

from Gibsonia, PA

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

After receiving my VideoTrack, I was a little dissapointed in the grainy image quality both in video and still pictures. Alesis' print advertising states that the video is clear and crisp...I don't agree. However, you can't expect much in video quality at this price. The main problem I have had is with Recording. Whenever I hit "record" the unit will record for an indeterminate amount of time and then simply stop recording on it's own (with plenty of battery life and recording time left). Sometimes it records for 10 minutes, 7 minutes, 15 minutes, whatever and then stops. Very annoying when you are recording a jam session and come to find out you only recorded 2 of the 10 songs you thought you did.

Unreliable at best!

By TIM

from Bakersfield ca

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

I really wasn't expecting alot for what the cost of the unit was but, what I got was even less than I expected. I tried 3 different times to record in a live setting and all three times the unit turned itself off mid session. (fully charged). There is no navigating video or audio, What you see is what you get. If your in a dim lighted area you will not see any recorded video other than silhouettes. The fact that you can't record audio without video or vise-verso is a minus not to mention it has to have its own proprietary software . I'm not expecting high dollar results from a low priced unit but to call this unit a decent unit for the money would be giving it a HUGE pat on the back.

Figured out why its soo cheap

By kidguitar

from San Diego, CA

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

Recent purchase at Guitar Center on black friday. GRIPE_#1: You can't tripod mount this unit and charge it at the same time! Did you notice that the bottom of the unit is neither shown on the Guitar Center website nor the Alesis website? That's because some Alesis engineer put the USB port/charging port right next to the tripod mount. Now, the tripod mount is off center because the SD card is inserted in the middle of the bottom, so the tripod mount "could" have been moved to the opposite side of the bottom from the USB port. GRIPE_#2: You can't turn off the video and "only" use this unit as an audio recorder. Remember, the microphones are the selling point here. Still putting it through its paces.

Follow up to my review "Worse than junk"

By George

from Paso Robles Ca

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

Wanted to give a "fair-shake" update on the Alesis Videotrack. I did make the trip and return/exchange the camcorder. I was willing to do this because the employee I talked to on the phone assured me they had received no other complaints and a few of the employee's including him had bought one and were very pleased. But I definitely made a point of giving the camera a good run through before I left town. Right off there were several things that stood out. First, the box on the new one was sealed with those round, clear adhesive security stickers which the first one lacked. Also the contents were packaged differently and more "factory" looking. And the tape on the individual plastic bags containing the various items were difficult to remove. On the first one the tape came off like it had been removed before or possibly was not the original sealing tape. Finally the on/off button. The first one was so recessed I had to use my fingernail pushed down into the hole to operate the button. And a couple of times it got stuck. The new one is flush but just the flesh of my finger is sufficient to operate. Now on to the camera. There is nothing to compare actually, the first one was obviously defective so my review is based only on the new one. I am happy with it and it is pretty much what I originally expected. Everything works, the sound is good. Certainly not the best I've ever heard but for the price, what it is and for my purposes it's more than adequate which is mostly a tool to record myself because I often play things off the cuff when I'm writing or jamming and can't remember what I did. Just an audio recording is not always enough to re-cop a cool riff or phrase. But I also wanted something that would make usable recording's/video's of my music or friends bands. And also just stuff to post on YouTube and FaceBook etc. My computer is older and doesn't process HiDef too well so that feature would be wasted anyway. I had a Kodak Zi8 but I had to record on the lower resolution settings so what was the point. For me personally I give the Alesis 4 stars, not great but very good. But for the sake of the review I only give it 3 because most people are going to want HiDef and those are already on the market. And I assume with the drastic price drop Alesis is about to unveil the next generation of the VideoTrack. If you just need something easy to carry and operate that makes good recordings and decent video and don't care about HiDef this is a good choice for $79.99 but I wouldn't pay more than that.

Good deal for 79 bucks

By Dean

from Milwaukee WI

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

bought this online on Black Friday. I wasn't expecting great video because of the reviews that I had read.....and they were right, the video is not terrific, so don't expect to use this to shoot your next commercial release. However, if you just want to get a look at yourself onstage, it's fine. At this point, an HD recorder with similar audio capability could be 3 or 4 times the price. The audio is very good for a handheld recorder. Buy it for the audio, and consider the video a bonus. I wouldn't pay MSRP of $249, but for $79.......sure, why not?

Don't Buy This Product

By John Trice

from Carey, Ohio

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

Absolutely awful. Stops recording for no reason. Audio and video are not in sync after 2 minutes of recording. Playback on the unit stinks. I wish I could think of one good thing to say about this recorder, but I can't. I paid full price and I would have to tape a nickel to this thing so that when I throw it in the trash I could say I threw away something. Alesis, shame on you! I will never buy another one of your products. With all of the bad reviews on here, I think a class action lawsuit would not be out of the question.

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

Bought on Black Friday also. I'm hearing the same hissing sound as other reviewer. Also, I could not get it to zoom in or out while recording. The manual says it can. When I do press zoom, I can hear the sound of pressing the buttons in the recording, popping sound. I'm going to try it tonight for husband's gig. If it doesn't perform as stated I will return it, got 30 days.

Not so sure about this product...

By Jeannie

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

I also got my recorder spur-of-the-moment at Guitar Center on Black Friday. First thing I noticed was that it looked used- cover scratched up, etc. I used it that day to record an outside acoustic jam- picked up a lot of wind noise, but otherwise the sound was OK. I used it the next night to record my husband's electric show. The zoom feature is worthless because the picture is so grainy as to be unwatchable. The sound was not good, either- sounded overloaded & crackly. I had it on the medium setting- maybe should have used the low setting? Will try again before deciding whether to return it. I agree that you get what you pay for

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

I bought this on Black Friday for $79.00. I rushed in thinking for $100 off they would be gone. Brought it home and figured out why the wanted to unload then quick. I was really disappointed with the quality of the sound. It had little volume. Did I get a defected one? I didn't want to take a second chance. I traded up to something I knew would work. You get what you pay for. In this case less.....

Good but not very impressive

By Jeff Daclan

from Torrance, CA

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

Purchased 2 units of video track last Black friday on line and recieved only one unit in a big package. I called GC and promised to take care of the problem. For me, videos and audios are acceptable as in the spec, but I believe the image stabilizer causes a delay in the video and it does n`t comes out in real time. Audio is very sensitive to interference like cell phones. For the bargain price of $79, I have no regret for I only use this non professional application while playing live music in the club every Friday in Long Beach, CA.

Meh. Pretty janky...

By Scottro B.

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

Luckily, I got the Black Friday price. The video is terrible, which I expected from a unit costing 80 bucks, but I also expected it to work properly. Mine stops recording randomly, regardless of battery life or available memory. The audio is just ok. Not nearly as good as the newer handheld audio recorders in the same price range. Features include LIGHT ON/LIGHT OFF. Not much going on with this thing. Save your money. It doesn't do anything very well. It kind of sucks, really
