Keys are unresponsive

from Putnam CT

Comments about Alesis V49 49-Key Keyboard Controller:

My experience with this product has been frustrating and very disappointing. When I first plugged it in I had to poke the keys very forcefully to get any response from this device. I downloaded the V49 editor software hoping that would help me fix the problem, but my Norton Antivirus kept rejecting the exe file. I posted a request for help on the Alesis support website last week - no response. So, I called them on the phone, waited 45 minutes on hold, and a technician told me there was nothing wrong with the V49 Editor software, and that I should try again to load the software and reset the velocity on the keys to "1". When I finally got the V49 Editor installed, I reset the velocity for the keys from 4 to 1 - and this made a marginal improvement - but the keyboard sensitivity at 1 is still unacceptably unresponsive. I also have discovered that the V49 seems to default the velocity on the keys back to 4. So I have to keep resetting the velocity. I really tried to make this work out of customer loyalty to Alesis because I have one of their other products - which I am very happy with - their SR-16 drum machine. However, I am throwing in the towel on this V49 - I am going to return it.

Comments about Alesis V49 49-Key Keyboard Controller:

This has been out of the box for about thirty minutes. It's now going back in the box, ready to be returned. The velocity is all over the board. Playing repeated chords at medium velocity, random keys from the chord suddenly spike to full volume, or near. I have downloaded the editor, and changed the velocity curve, but I'm still getting the spikes. I have put it through a midi monitor, and I can see spikes occuring. Being a piano player, I wasn't expecting a decent action out of this, but it has an awful feel which makes you so disconnected from the music you're trying to make. Couple that with the random velocity spikes, and it's completely unusable.

Comments about Alesis V49 49-Key Keyboard Controller:

I bought this as a temporary solution for a "pop-up" studio setup, didn't really feel the need to purchase a second Axiom. It's plug and play, and looks nice, but good gracious: make sure you allocate enough time in your sessions to go back and re-ediit your midi performances. The velocity is all over the place. Literally. The only benefit this controller has is to save you time from clicking in midi notes by hand...though you spend that time going back to edit the random velocities it generates so I'm not sure how much time you're actually saving. If price is a concern for you, you're better off getting a better brand with less keys and just going nuts on your octave buttons. Seriously.

Comments about Alesis V49 49-Key Keyboard Controller:

I wanted a MIDI controller with enough good features for the price, this one was the best one. I have played MOTIF and high end AKAI keyboards before even though it doesn't compare, for the price its amazing. Out of the box I noticed while I was going into Logic the keys were touchy, the curve of the sensitivity of they keys were way off for me. I tried to see if the software could fix it and there is a curve setting for the keys. I tried changing it from 1-8 which are all the curve settings and it didn't do anything having to find out you have to send the setting to the device(V49) so it will save it. It works great now! The keys feel fine and all the settable knobs and drum pads feel great! They light up too! I highly recommend this one for a home recording studio or a secondary controller for a live set up. Thats exactly what I use it for! Just make sure you have the curve setting that you like and send the setting to the hardware device to change it on the keyboard.

Comments about Alesis V49 49-Key Keyboard Controller:

This is a great product! I love that it comes with Ableton Live 9, I have the professional version. But the light version is good if you just want to do some basic stuff. The keyboard itself feels very good. It's semi-weighted keys are close enough to a piano as to not negatively effect my playing. The drum pads and knobs are also very useful. If you need more the VI-49 is a better product if you really want to pay that much more. If it's just for recording, you really don't need it.

      Only a couple of complaints:

1.The Printer cable sticks out too far and makes e worried that it might come out. It's been about 2 years now, and I haven't had too much trouble with it. So just be careful!

      2. The software is not very good. I can't seem to get it to do anything. Its fine though because you don't really need it. The reason I wanted to use it was to reverse the polarity of my sustain pedal. But I gave up on that after several hours of research.

Comments about Alesis V49 49-Key Keyboard Controller:

I bought this so I could have a wide range of keys to choose from as well as a drum-pad without buying it's big brother (The VI49) for a whopping $230. I like the drum-pad and the knobs allot, however the keys have a tendency to jump when you hit them too hard and not play loud enough the rest of the time. This is not a big deal in post-production if you have a nice recording program, but is really kinda' annoying when you are trying to record something. I can't speak for all of Alesis' MIDI keyboards, but that could be greatly improved on.
