Perfect Product for the price

By Steven Mundschau

from Yorba Linda

I ordered the Alesis Trigger IO because I wanted to convert my acoustic kit to an electronic kit. After plugging the triggers in and installing the drivers on my computer, I was very excited to see how easy it was to set up and get started. The USB-midi connection was simple and leaves my midi ports open. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because there isn't the capability to plug into an amp. But hey, it is a midi box.

Again - Don't use this with Roland pads

By Ian

from Minneapolis, MN

I did the same thing as a previous user. I used this unit with the Roland TD-4 mesh pads. It does work for basic needs, but requires quite a bit of tweaking when you get started. However, the dynamics are fair at best. It has loud and quiet, but not much in between. Again, this might be a great unit for triggering other pads and devices, but it falls short with Roland. I have both my top toms at maximum threshold and x-talk to avoid triggering the "second" trigger on the pad, but it still triggers if I'm not careful. On the upside, I like the fine-tuning it allows. For now, I'm just going to have to be careful with my playing and do a lot of MIDI editing in post. This is a fairly intuitive interface for triggers in a low price range. Maybe there is a cure for the Roland/Alesis combination, but I've yet to find it.

Don't use with Roland pads

By Tim

from United States

The Trigger I/O seems to be a decent little unit, but it is not so great with Roland pads. I read that this was a problem before I bought it, but I decided to test it since it was so cheap. The unit really does not get along well with the output from the roland pads. The velocity curves are all wrong. You can change it so all your hits are too loud, or all your hits are too soft. If you spend more time with it you can get it to the point that your soft hits are soft and your loud hits are loud, but all of your medium hits will be too loud. You just can't get it to feel right. In the end it is frustrating to play. If you have Roland pads I would just invest a little more money and get something like a TD-8 module. It seems like a sacrifice before you do it, but in hindsight, it's totally worth it.
