For my first and only drum machine, the Sr-16 is extremely user friendly. After looking through the owner's manual for a few short minutes, I was creating and storing my own patterns. The SR-16 has twelve pads, each of which can be assigned a different tone from it's internal library. You can choose between using the touch sensitive pads or setting the kit to a fixed volume. The huge dynamic range of the SR-16's pads was a bit too much for me to manage, so it's easier for me to layer the beats one tone at a time and select the appropriate fixed volume for each piece as I lay it down. Technology moves fast, but the SR-16 has been around for a long time and still stands up in terms of sound quality. Since they've sort of become "yesterday's" model, you can usually pick one up pretty cheap. With today's technology, you can find pretty good prices on lower-end units packed with features, but even though the SR-16 is fairly basic, the things it does are done very well. The SR-16 might not be the first choice for a high-tech MIDI studio, but the sound quality is great for working out song ideas. I mainly use mine for home demo recordings on my digital 8-track, and with well programmed beats mixed with a little EQ tweaking, things can end up sounding fairly polished.

Its is tough to find out after you buy something like this that it does not have one single Waltz beat programmed into it. Come on guys it seems to me that there are more to music than just Rap or Raggae out here in the real world! If you are using this for Country Music there are so many songs that are waltzes but yet not a single one on the country settings. I see for me to get waltzes into the machine I have to spend at least another $40 to purchase a connector to download it into it. And probably have to purchase the download from Alesis to download it!

Limited and outdated, but maybe right for you.

Comments about Alesis SR-16 Drum Machine:

I rely on patterns (for non hip hop/electronica), rather than making beats. I find the selection of patterns dated and limited. I can't comment on the device's ability to make beats manually, but I would guess that many others would find the sounds (as well as the patterns) dated. In addition, the manual states that one can assign any drum kit to any pattern, but does not tell you how.

Comments about Alesis SR-16 Drum Machine:

I've owned these SR-16s for a lot of years and when one starts to get "wonky" I just buy another. I use them for many things including demo recordings. What many users don't understand is that if you take the time to get to know all the things it can do, this unit can produce sounds and rhythms that others can't tell is not a live drummer. But it takes work and practice to do that.

Comments about Alesis SR-16 Drum Machine:

My partner & I have been together now for 5 yrs. We play @ a little bar on the water weekly N the summer & have some established gigs we play every winter, so we've played out 23X a yr since we've been together.
We both play numerous instruments (banjo, violin, mandolin piano etc.) We added this drum machine N2 our act about 2 months after we got together, it has changed are hole show! We basically turned into a 2 man band. This drum machine is always in time, is never late for a gig & i only had to pay it once! Easy to use, the pre-programed rhythms are fine (i've never used the record your own track option). Worth every penny!

Comments about Alesis SR-16 Drum Machine:

I got mine in the early 90s and used it a lot. No PC, just turn this on and play. Great for practicing and trying ideas out - and the sound is solid. Sadly I no longer have it, but to see that Alesis is still producing this says something! What other musical electronic gear is still in production after 20+ years.

Now mine had the 5 pin midi interface and it might be more modern to be USB Midi and powered. The spec doesn't really what type of Midi it is. That is my only negative comment.

Comments about Alesis SR-16 Drum Machine:

I use this for demo recordings. 30-some years ago I bought a used HR16B and used it with great success. This unit has all of the functionality at half the size. My only complaint is that it uses smaller pads which is not a good thing for a clumsy oaf.
