I bought this to replace my twenty year old Korg X-3, which I was basically using as a midi controller anyways. That one had those plastic light keys.

This new one is full sized and keys are semi-wieghted. They are little stiff and they spring up, but I'm getting used to them.

I plugged it into my Mac laptop with USB and launched Garageband and it just simply worked.

I plugged in my 20 year old damper pedal and it just worked.

The keyboard has no power supply, the USB powers it. Cool!

It's NOT a free standing keyboard. It doesn't do anything without a computer and a softsynth or midi program.

Overall it feels like a nice, high-quality instrument. It's solid.

For less than two hundred b u c k s with free shipping, though, is a crazy price. When I thought I needed a new keyboard, I thought it was going to be a thousand plus purchase. If this thing breaks in a couple years, I'll throw it away and get a new one.

I owned an Alesis QS8.1 for many years and bought it because of the feel of the semi-weighted keys. The Q88 on the other hand is a huge disappointment when it comes to semi-weighted feel. It is really mushy and very similar to a Casiotone... except with bigger keys. Hey Alesis, go ahead and charge more for a real semi-weighted feel, or call it what it is, a budget 88-key controller.

Using the Q88 with a ProTools HD system and an Edirol SD-90 Sound Canvas. No problems with the hookup and the keyboard is great, functions are logical and easy to access.

You need a space and support for this unit (not a complaint, just an observation) you should add this comment to the unit discription. Again, my grandson is very happy with the Q88.

                  Comments about Alesis Q88 88-Key USB/MIDI Controller:

Very nice Midi controller. Wish it had a dual voice and split keyboard control too. Have a hard time finding a power supply for it. Purchased one from MF with pin negative and simply cut and reversed polarity. You would think Alesis would have a power supply for their equipment. Purchasing a second one so will have equal action for stage use. Wish there was a better fitting gig bag too. Oh well, can't have everything.

                    Comments about Alesis Q88 88-Key USB/MIDI Controller:

I bought this because I needed a controller at my computer to play keys with - I don't seem to practice near enough anymore.
I didn't expect much. I got more then I expected but this is still not a serious road worthy, piano like keyboard but that is coming from the perspective of a 52 year old man that started playing piano at age 2.5 on a 12 foot steinway piano. Most people will love this to death.
It is well made but light. It plays well and fast but the keys bend a little under my hand when playing hard and fast. The keyboard is light weight and that is great and horrible. It moves easy when you want to move it and it moves easy when you don't want to move it. I am probably going to attach some supper duty velcro to it to hold it into place - problem solved.
I have only had this about 3 weeks so it is unlikely anything would break in that time. It seems to be well built and short of beating on it, will probably last longer then it needs to.
Buy this with confidence. It blows the M-Audio boards away and they have the worst customer support known in the industry. Alexis has always lasted and they have always been there for support.
As for easy, I plugged the USB plug into a USB 1 hold hub I have connected to my new mac and it worked immediately.

                    Comments about Alesis Q88 88-Key USB/MIDI Controller:

I loved using this keyboard the first day I had it. I used it to program stuff for a recent album I co-produced. I also played it at gigs by sampling tones onto it from Logic. One day, I had the keyboard in my car while driving home one afternoon, and when I got home, I saw that part of the Alesis logo at the right side of the keyboard had melted, as if someone had deliberately burnt it with flame, and since then the keyboard seized functioning. I admit that the temperatures that day was on the high side, but I wasn't expecting that to happen. I am going to get another one soon because I love action of this keyboard, and it's cheap. But if this happens again, I will find something else.

Works i use an iphone power adapter to power it via usb for live and it does the trick so you really don't need a power adapter. The only thing is lack of sliders for organ tone wheel control but for the price you get what you get. and it is good for the price
