I chose to buy this keyboard because I needed an upgrade from my Behringer UMA25S and I didn't want anything too complicated, like extra knobs and all sorts of buttons. This was a good choice because this keyboard doesn't need any drivers for it to work and it literally began working right away within' minutes on my DAW(Sonar Home Studio 7XL) once I plugged it into my Windows XP computer with the included usb cable. It comes with a Ableton Live Lite disc and small manual also. If you want a quick, simple, affordable keyboard that you can use right away with basic features like octave switching, volume, velocity, pitch, and modulation then this is for you.

The quality and flexibility are fine for the MIDI hobbyist use I'm putting this to; however, there is one serious shortcoming in the design: the keys are too short! It's not that they're non-standard in any way, it's just that the fulcrums are right at the back of the end of the exposed keys--they need to be three or four inches behind this for the touch to feel reasonably uniform along the length of each key. As it is, the touch is light at the front and nearly rigid toward the back of each key. Fine if you're going to pound away on the white keys, but it's impossible to play most chords pianissimo!

Best keys in the price range

By Han Shotfirst

from Cashville, TN

Comments about Alesis Q49 USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller:

This is a monster for the price. Everything you could look for. If you wanna spend a lot more, you can get a lot better. But, in the price range, nothing beats this. Decent sensitivity, pitch bend, mod wheel, octave up and down, and a sustain pedal input gives you everything you need for a home studio. To top it all off, it comes with the Pro Coverage. Is it the hottest midi keyboard controller on the market? Of course not. But it goes well beyond adequate, looks sexy, and GC is standing behind it with the Pro Coverage.

Artist On The Go

By Cedric Hardrick

from Memphis,TN

Comments about Alesis Q49 USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller:

This midi controller is the perfect size to be creative while out and about composing thoughts into complete compositions. It is not complicated with unnecessary buttons. Just connect to your laptop, open your virtual sounds software and away you go. Just that easy and simple to record that moment whether with a choir or just musical pieces during practices with the band.

DO NOT BUY THIS KEYBOARD

By JACK FITZGERALD

from Otsego, MN

Comments about Alesis Q49 USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller:

I bought this keyboard for the first time about a year ago, and within 3 months the usb port broke due to the way the usb chord rests in the socket. So foolishly enough I went out and bought the same keyboard again, and the same exact thing happened, the usb port broke. Thankfully there is a 9V socket, and midi over usb is useless in my workflow. But the first keyboard got fried by the first power adapter I used. I had also purchased the Q25 which I use for school, and would be rendered useless if I had the same usb problem, thankfully it only has a key that doesn't sustain. Again, do not buy these keyboards.

Expensive sound at a bargain price

By Richard Sutterfield

from Denver, Co

Comments about Alesis Q49 USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller:

Excellent product. Couldn't be happier with the general look, feel and sound, and especially the action and sensitivity of the keys. For this price they feel much better than I would have expected, even when playing "very softly". Everything works as it should. Drivers install when you plug in the USB and you're all set. I'm running it through my Reaper DAW and some free software that imitates a Hammond B3, Fender Rhodes, grand piano, etc. and it works perfectly. I sound just like Ray Charles or Gregg Allman. If only I could play like them! Installation is simple, I used the MIDI output as input to my audio interface and it works fine. You can also use the USB connection, whatever seems to work best, your DAW will find them both. It's a 5-pin MIDI jack. I'm running the DAW output through a pair of Alesis studio monitors also from Guitar Center, and it sounds like a million bucks. Just the ticket for amateur recording buffs like us.

Great keyboard at great price

By Bradford Hadley

from Portsmouth, NH

Comments about Alesis Q49 USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller:

I needed a keyboard mostly for recording through a USB port, but also wanted the MIDI output too. This one does it all. They keys are good, especially for the price. Not weighted but the pressure sensitivity is good. I haven't used the midi controls features yet, haven't really figured it out.

USB port socks :(

By Adrian David Ruiz Munguia

from Austin Texas

Comments about Alesis Q49 USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller:

I bought this, and at first instance it seems to be an excellent controller BUT!! it has one particular problem that I have seen many times. The quality of the usb port is terrible, I used it for 5 months and it got broken, when I pulled the USB cable, the inside of the USB port came out with it... I mean, it does work well, but the machinery sock. I dont recommend to buy this controller, get a little more money and buy something better.

excellent buy for basic MIDI control

By Denzil

from Charleston, SC

Comments about Alesis Q49 USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller:

If you know how to play, or have a familiarity with production, you don't need anything more than this. I use it with Ableton Live 9 and it works perfectly. The sensitivity is great. It really picks up on the tension of the touch. The keys are nice and light to the touch, which I prefer. Some players like a more tense feel, but I tend to play lightly on MIDI. This thing was ready to play out of the box. I paid $79 for it, and I think it could easily go for twice that price. Works right out of the box. No special drivers or installation necessary. I tap out drums on it, play melodies, control chopped samples... everything. If you like the bells and whistles and touchpads, this isn't for you. If you want a great MIDI controller at a great price, definitely grab this one if it's on sale.

Worth the purchase price

About Me Experienced

Verified Buyer

Pros

  • useful for practice and experimentation

Cons

  • keys are unevenly stiff and short

Best Uses

  • Practicing

Comments about Alesis Q49 USB/MIDI Keyboard Controller:

The key pressure is uneven over the keyboard and is often very stiff. The keys are about 0.5 inch shorter than standard. Depressing two sharps with one hand is troublesome. This is my second Q49, which is actually better than the first one. Still, the buyer would get value for his money.
