Comments about Alesis PercPad Electronic Drum Pad:

As a stand alone practice unit when the entire kit is too big to carry this is ideal to have. It is portable and offers all I need to keep in touch with my drumming. I am starting to attach a velcro strap, for around the left thigh, for easier set-ups. How simpler can it get. Great product.

Comments about Alesis PercPad Electronic Drum Pad:

This unit makes a nice practice pad or an addition to an existing e-drum kit. You can use the contained samples or use the MIDI out to trigger another device (I haven't tried this yet). There are line level outs and a ¼" phone jack for private use with phones. There is even a jack for external "kick" triggering. You might get crosstalk between pads if the pad sensitivity is set too high, but this can be adjusted out. I'm happy with this pad. A deal.

Comments about Alesis PercPad Electronic Drum Pad:

I was looking for something to use with my wedding band to play in those songs that need electronic sounds, especially the kick drum, but I didn't want, or need, a whole electronic kit. This little Alesis Percpad is just what I needed. It is super easy to use, you can tune, pan, add reverb and change sounds in a second. I tried it in a show last Saturday and it worked great. The electronic kick made a world of difference to drive those songs that need an electronic beat. And I could change and tune the sounds in seconds to suit different songs. I also used the shaker, electronic snare, and claps. The price is incredible. I did not buy the adapter though, instead I bought a snare stand which is cheaper, you can also use it for other things, and it gives you many more possibilities for positioning the percpad. I also didn't want to spend a lot of money buying an electronic kick. I plugged in an extra sustain pedal from a keyboard and it worked perfectly, you just have to set the switch in the back of the percpad to "switch" instead of "trigger", it is that easy. This is really a no brainer if you just want to add some percussion and electronic sounds to your kit.

Comments about Alesis PercPad Electronic Drum Pad:

I do a lot of side gigs as a recording artist and co-producer and the PercPad has been an amazing addition to both my home studio where I add drums to other people's stuff, and to my portable recording rig, where I go to folk's houses or to small gigs. Some of the onboard sounds are fine--I recently used the "handclap" of a recording and my colleague found it way better than the one in ProTools he'd been using--but the magic of this unit isn't the sounds--it's the midi. You get 5 channels--in the midi editing mode you can assign the midi note value to whatever the DAW needs to it to be to communicate with it for hi-hats, toms, bass, snare, whatever. I worked in my friend's Protools environment and found all the note values we needed to assign in the PercPad for various plug-ins and in the midi editor. Now we can add, track by track, each of those voices with total isolation. I'd done similar work before using a kit with mesh heads and triggers--now I can do it with a device that's smaller than a snare drum and costs less than just the cables and heads I was using. I augment my PercPad with an Alesis DM5 for further midi capability and live voicings, and a couple cymbals, and I play it live at smaller gigs and with Electronica projects. If you know how to use midi, this thing is an amazing product.

Comments about Alesis PercPad Electronic Drum Pad:

The PercPad is EXACTLY what it says it is, and nothing more. It can be a useful addition to any percussion setup, and because of its compact size, it can easily be added to a regular drum kit.

Using the 25 internal presets, you can combine five tunable sounds to each pad, including the kick input, which brilliantly accepts both momentary pedals and kick pad outputs, giving you access to a wide variety of possibilities.

Unfortunately, the lack of a memory function to remember pad assignments is a major flaw in this unit, and makes wholesale changes of assignments problematic in live performance, especially if any tuning is involved. In those situations, I recommend a "set it and forget it" approach, for the most part. For home recording, where you can take the time to tweak every sound, and take advantage of features like assignable pan, and reverb, it can be incredibly versatile.

I bought it to use as a "drum kit in a box" in conjunction with a kick pad, a hi-hat and a ride cymbal for rehearsals, and semi-acoustic and low volume shows. I just assigned pads to kick, snare and 3 "Hex Toms" the first tuned high, and the third tuned as low as possible. Since the middle "tom" required no tuning, I could reassign that pad to cowbell, hand claps, or whatever was needed, and then change it back without taking too much time. It worked beautifully, and it felt sturdy and durable, mounted on a snare stand.

It's ridiculously simple to use, so you don't have to be a keyboard guru or master of MIDI to get the sounds you want out of it, but if you or someone you work with is so inclined, it can also be used to trigger sounds other than the ones that are built in, or loops, or whatever MIDI events one can imagine. I suppose you could even use the PercPad to trigger changes in the lights, if they're MIDI capable.

All in all, you can get a lot out this workman like electronic drum pad, and it takes up a LOT less room than a set of congas. A real bargain!
