I bought this mixer to use as a USB interface for my laptop. I had previously been using the M-Audio Fast Track Pro for this. The Alesis runs circles around the Fast Track in terms of features, sound quality, and overall ease of use (for the exact same price). The effects aren't great, but they're better than some. The EQ functions are fantastic. The only gripe I have is with the software. The Cubase-LE program is not very self-explanatory, and there is no software documentation with the product (however, the manual for the unit itself is very concise and informative). I'm currently using Adobe Audition 2.0 with Amplitube for effects. Seems to be a pretty good combination for this unit.

I bought one of these for recording, but it's almost unusable. Whenever the USB cable is connected there's a loud, high-pitched buzzing which is audible through the Control Room out, although it's not audible through the USB recording interface. I encountered a lot of problems with the USB functionality. It can not be both a recording and playback device, even when not using an ASIO driver. If one program is using it as a playback source it will record only silence and vice-versa. Eventually, the USB port stopped functioning entirely; it started out with "a USB device connected to this computer has malfunctioned" and then moved to complete refusal to recognize it on three different computers (Windows XP, Vista, and Ubuntu). It doesn't even show up as unrecognized in the device manager, it's as if the USB port isn't even connected. The Main Mix knob creates a lot of hum around 500Hz if it's turned more than a quarter of the way, so if I want to record from it I have to connect to the Control Room outputs with a seperate USB audio interface. Save yourself a lot of trouble and pay $100 more for a decent mixer.

A great value for a small price

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 8USB Mixer with USB and DSP:

I purchased this item to use with one of my 4-laptop units that I use for portable recording. I wanted something that I could capture more than 4 lines at one time. The unit is built very well so I think it will last for a long time if used properly. The unit uses USB connectivity which makes it a simple plug and play operation. The unit has onboard effects that are usable but I would recommend using something better if you have it available. There is a 3-band EQ on each channel which is something I needed in a small package (I tend to like manual EQ over using software). The unit comes with Cubase LE which is a very usable recording program if you need a nice portable mixer or a small recording DAW for demos at home you will be very satisfied with this product.

Great mixer for entry-to-mid level users

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 8USB Mixer with USB and DSP:

I just purchased my Alesis MultiMix 8USB yesterday, and I must say I'm very impressed. This is the first mixer I purchased, but being accustomed to big studio mixers I wasn't sure if this should be 1st mixer for my personal studio. I'm glad that I made this purchase! The built-in fx are cool, EQ sensitivity is EXCELLENT, as well as the plug-in-play feature. This is a definate MUST-BUY for anyone who's looking to buld their own studio.

Inexpensive but Perfect Quality All-in-One Mixer

By Andy

from California

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 8USB Mixer with USB and DSP:

This is not just a mixer. You can also enjoy AUDIO CARD and DSP effector on it. 44.1 Khz 16 bit Stereo sound can be playback/record from/to your PC using USB 1.1 cable. Of course, there are 3-band EQ per channel and AUX send/return sockets. Excellent DSP effectors remind you of the reputation of Alesis on sound effectors like Quadraverb. All nobs are pretty much smooth, you will not be missing faders in expensive mixers.

Excellent Mixer

By Young'n

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 8USB Mixer with USB and DSP:

If you want clear professional recording through your computer via usb then I strongly suggest this mixer. I use it for my studio and it is great. No problems what so ever, the voice is crisp and clear. I have no problems and no regrets. The only bad thing is that the internal effects aren't all that good, but honestly if your transfering it to your computer then you have programs anyway.

A must have for recording!

By soundman

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 8USB Mixer with USB and DSP:

If you're recording, you must have this mixer. It makes recording on computers so easy and productive. The 4 mic inputs give me all that I need to record a song or a script. I love the control knobs, they're very precise and they do a good job of allowing you to adjust the tone exactly the way you want it to sound. The internal effects further add to the usefulness of this already versatile mixer. An all in one package for recording!

Can't beat this for $150

By Guitarist

from Pittsburgh, PA

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 8USB Mixer with USB and DSP:

I bought this mixer after using a cheap behringer mixer, and the difference was astonishing. The Alesis has a very low noise floor, the USB out is a MUST for anyone recording with a PC. I use my Alesis Multimix 8 USB with Adobe Audition and I get great quality recordings with the USB input into my laptop. I've heard if you have a firewire PC you should opt for the $300 Alesis firewire, but my laptop is only 1.1 usb anyhow. This was a great investment for me for recording my music and I recommend it to any musician looking for a quality mixer at a good price. Don't make the mistake of buying a behringer mixer for $50, you'll get nothing but hiss and noise, invest a little extra for this quality mixer, which also has lots of handy on board digital effects.

It's a mixer. USB Fail...

By FLY

from Cleveland, Ohio

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 8USB Mixer with USB and DSP:

Purchased strictly for the USB recording option, to be used as a stand alone focus group recording system. The USB drivers are not automatic for windows 7 and were not inuclded in software. Also there is NO support from alesis.com for this unit. I was unable to find 3rd party drivers to make it work. Which is shocking. There are 3rd party drivers to connect everything else to windows 7 why not this device? not to mention the crazy amount of heat generated by a mixer with no amp was astounding. Furthermore it's too compact if you have adult fingers turning the pots is difficult without bumping nearby pots. The effects are silly does anyone use these? Alesis could use it's history to offer a built in sequencer that would be worth buying.

Bought this to do some voiceover work on television and video projects...connected with no problem with my Windows Vista PC...something other products won't do. The effects on this board are great. I don't think you can buy a better mixer for the price!

Good for the price.

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 8USB Mixer with USB and DSP:

I got this little mixer for my drum set at my home studio. With the 8 inputs it was perfect for my drum set. The recording program it comes with is works great if you get use to it, but to me I thought it was kind of a hassle. The usb input is fast and accurate, the body of the mixer is strong and durable. The only downsides i found to it was a little bit of his that ended up on recordings, its not much of anything really, you would need good ears for it to bother you. With the multiple outputs and 3 band EQ it doubles as a great small stage soundboard as well. For the money I say that this is a great buy. I would recommend this to any musician wanting a small home studio, or trying to make a good sounding demo cd. Although the live soundboard feature work great on this, I wouldn't recommend this for someone who just wants a soundboard for say a theater or concert hall, you should get a much bigger soundboard.

    Recording on This Mixer

    By MikeVo316

    from Wichita, KS

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 8USB Mixer with USB and DSP:

I bought this Mixer to record my band's music to my computer. It worked really well. It was easy to use. I edited the music with audacity and it sounded good for a 150 dollar mixer. The effects on it are kind of lame, but some of them are good for recording. But if you have the money go for firewire, instead of usb. Fire wire records cleaner sounds and you can record multiple tracks at once. With this mixer i had to record all the instruments seperately to get my songs to sound good. But I think that this mixer is good for how much it costs.

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 8USB Mixer with USB and DSP:

If youre a home recorder, this is the perfect tool. Not only is it one of the cheapest computer interfaces available, its also a mixer! Ive only had a problem once when the USB didnt work, I dont know why but now it works great. Only thing is volume is a little low so you have to turn it all the way up. But you cannot get a better deal. Thumbs up!
