Overview

The MutliMix 8 USB FX compact mixer comes with built-in effects and doubles as a computer recording interface so you can mix, record, or do both at the same time. Whether you are mixing a band or sub-mixing a group of inputs, such as a drumset, the MultiMix 8 USB FX is easy to use, rugged, and packed with features. Offering microphone inputs with phantom power, guitar-direct inputs, and line-level inputs for connecting everything else, plus a wide range of effects, the MultiMix 8 USB FX delivers clean audio to your PA or recording system with hassle-free computer connection.

This dynamic mixer features four XLR inputs with independent gain pots on channels one through four. These XLR inputs also have a switchable phantom power option to accommodate both dynamic and condenser microphones. TRS Line inputs are also available on all eight channels. New to the MultiMix 8 USB FX is a high-impedance input on channel two, which allows direct connection of a guitar or bass. This is a great convenience for singer/songwriters looking to get a clean, "hot" signal. A Tape RCA stereo input is also included adding the ability to mix in audio from other sources such as a CD or LP player.

MultiMix 8 USB FX includes an internal effects processor to quickly and easily add new colors to your mix. Reverb, Delay, or Phaser can be dialed up simply by adjusting the pre- or post-fader knobs located within each channel strip. MultiMix 8 USB FX also contains Aux Out and stereo Returns, as well as Insert jacks on channels one and two to allow for audio to be processed by external effects engines. This gives you an impressive amount of routing options in such a compact size.

Like the other mixers in Alesis' MultiMix USB series the MultiMix 8 USB FX contains a complete USB recording interface. Musicians and engineers can plug its class-compliant USB connection into their Mac or PC without installing any software drivers and enjoy a digital-direct stereo connection with virtually any audio software application. It enables bidirectional stereo signal, so musicians can record the stereo Main output into their computer and listen back using the mixer as an interface from software to headphones and monitoring loudspeakers.

A number of key design improvements are included on the MultiMix 8 USB FX. Enlarged knob-to-knob spacing improves ergonomics and in-use efficiency. The newly designed mixer introduces a sleek new appearance for the MultiMix series and incorporates removable end caps, which can be helpful for squeezing the mixer into smaller spaces in tightly packed setups. In addition to its improved signal-to-noise ratio specifications, the new mixer consumes 36% less power than its predecessor for reliability and energy efficiency.

Overall this mixer will serve well for solo acts, duos, trios, and bands performing in small venues that have no house PA. It would also work well for setting up a PA at home to practice or just to jam with friends. It has 4 mic inputs, which should be enough for most people unless you want to mic your amps and/ or your drums. I bought mine along with a pair of Kustom 12" powered PA speakers for an affordable, portable PA that I can take with me to perform at nursing homes which I do a couple of times a month. As the guy I play with told me, there's tens of dollars to be made playing nursing homes. So we wanted something that was relatively cheap, but that would still give us enough volume and effects options and we were able to achieve that with this set up.
This mixer has a lot of features for the price range. If you are buying it for the effects you may want to look somewhere else. Through a PA it is difficult to hear the effects unless they are turned almost all the way up. It is a little easier to hear them through headphones, but if you are using it for live applications that doesn't really help. I have not tried using the USB connection, so please refer to the other reviews for the issues with that. I bought this mixer to replace a Yamaha mixer with no built-in effects because the guy I play with wanted reverb for his vocals. There was a Yamaha mixer with built-in effects, but it was a little more than this one and it had a plastic body where as this one is metal. Those were the two factors that led me to buy this one over the Yamaha.
The quality seems fairly good for this price range. I have owned a higher end Mackie mixer and a lower end Yamaha mixer and this falls somewhere in the middle. For the price the quality is really good, but if you have more money to spend then you might want to look at a Mackie instead. It is nice that they have a metal chassis, it makes it feel more road worthy than a plastic mixer. The sliders and knobs seem to all move smoothly.
There are not many mixers in this price range, but this one stands out among the other choices because of it's heavy build and relatively rich features on such a small mixing board.

I was sold on this product's features. Perfect for small studio live performing and recording, all at a reasonable price. However, the quality is very poor. When I first tried out the unit it seemed to work great. After two minutes of using the effects, it hissed with static for 10 seconds and the effects stopped working. This happened on all channels with all effect types. As a result, I returned it to the store the following day. Guitar Center gladly gave me a full replacement. One minute after plugging it in, the power adaptor went up in smoke and it is useless. The power adaptors aren't anything you can simply pick up at your local electronics store to replace either. I'm giving up on Alesis and will consider the Behringer Xenyx 1204 USB or the Peavey PV8 USB.

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 8 USB FX Regular:

I've had this board for about two years now. It's been used to record via the USB interface, for lots and lots practice time, and a handful of live performances. It has held up wonderfully, I get great sound out of it, and the effects are worthwhile. For the price, I honestly couldn't ask for more.

I have owned one of these for around six years and have had four power supplies. I will probably not buy another power supply. I am currently looking fora more reliable mixer.

    Compatibility with Windows8

    By Norman

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 8 USB FX Regular:

I purchased this item last year well into the Windows 8 life cycle and I cannot get it to work with the Windows 8 operating system. I've tried two different Windows 8 computers and just can't get the sound to come through to my computer. I've tried to contact Alesis support and have heard nothing back from them in two days. I'd love to rate this higher but based on functionality that does not work and responsiveness of their support I can only give it two stars. Frustrated Buyer.

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 8 USB FX Regular:

Purchased this to replace an aging, older version of the same model which has been extremely reliable with superb sound. But the new mixer's channels 5/6 and 7/8 appear to not be pre-amped; I use these for keyboards, and they were barely audible. Using the old mixer into the same PA at the same settings nearly blew my windows out. Effects are also very weak compared to the older model. Very disappointed with this unit, but I guess very lucky that I had the older one to compare it to. Musician's Friend was very helpful and prompt in arranging a return.

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 8 USB FX Regular:

I purchased this item about a couple of months ago and it still works as if it is brand new. I am a drummer so I bought a whole mic set as well and the mixer not only gets great sound with the drums but even vocals, guitars, and bass as well!!! The downside is you may have to record every track separately but other than that it's great!!

I use this unit with a pair of powered speakers for small band practice use and DJ applications. I like that this inexpensive unit has built in digital effects. Works well for band practice so I can put a little effect on my vocals.

Compact and easy to transport. My only recommendation would be to include some type of case.

        Perfect so Far

        By Kyle Hughes

        from Chandler, AZ

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 8 USB FX Regular:

As stated in so many ways by others, this is a mixer, not an 9 channel A2D via USB input box for DAW software. Yes, it has a USB port, but it's just for feeding the end-result sound out to a PC for something ruff or minimal. IMHO, a mixer isn't even part of home studio-to-DAW recording equipment, it's for mixing sound from multiple sources into a single set of speakers, or what-have-you, for live performance or practice. If you're truly using a decent DAW software package, mixing will be done via the computer during post processing, not with a mixing board on the way into your DAW. That being said, this has worked perfectly for me thus far. I bought this so I could plug a couple mics, a guitar (see the special channel 2 guitar button), and a keyboard into my guitar amp so the family could practice at home before performing on stage at church each Sunday. Being able to add a little reverb on the mic tracks is just a bonus for our practice sessions. The sound is coming through clean, knobs are nice to work with (Alesis improved the spacing in this model), and all is well. The unit feels very solid, looks sharp, and does what it's designed to do perfectly (mix) at a minimal cost.

        Not recomemnded

        By James Murphy

        from Feeding Hills, Ma

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 8 USB FX Regular:

I bought the Alesis as an inexpensive way to record guitar tracks using Cuebase on my computer. I had many issues with background noise, and most notably a severe latency issue (with USB interface) while my instrument was plugged direct into the mixer. For some reason the playback was a couple of seconds late. I tried decreasing the latency in my program, but it would not make a difference. Even tried downloading different audio drivers. Alesis support did admit to the issue, but was no help in finding an acceptable solution. As the saying goes; "You Get What You Pay For".

This is NOT the USB 2.0 product

        By Bradford Hadley

        from South Berwick, Maine

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 8 USB FX Regular:

I love my Alesis Multimix 4, and have several other Alesis products. I almost ordered the Multimix 8 USB listed here, assuming it was the 2.0 version. They really should have named the USB 2.0 products to clearly differentiate the two lines. The product listed here is USB 1.0-level. This means that it sends just two channels (L-mono and R-mono or one stereo signal). The USB 2.0 product sends 8+. So if you are looking for something to send multiple channels to your DAW, like Garageband, look for the other product. If you just need stereo output, or are using for a live performance mixer, this is a great product at a great price.
