Overview

This pair of Alesis M1 Active 520 Near-Field Reference Monitors offers incredible definition and flat frequency response with the help of high-precision drivers and a carefully designed crossover. The rear-port provides deep bass-extension and high SPL output, and the rear-mounted EQ switches allow the user to tailor the speaker to the studio environment. A 1"-thick front baffle minimizes speaker resonance and the acoustic waveguide evenly disperses high-frequency sound. The Bass Density control lets you dial in balanced sound regardless of room or placement. The Alesis M1 520 monitor's top-mounted power/clip indicator lets you know if the speaker is clipping.

If you're tight on $$ and you need some adequate studio monitors, you just can't go wrong with these Alesis M1s. They deliver great bass response and better highs than some of the more expensive brands! I listened to about 7 pairs of slightly more expensive monitors in-store and couldn't figure out why these more affordable monitors sounded better! But I didn't care, my ears don't lie. I do House/Dance music, so my monitors must be able to handle both great highs ans well as lows and these babies are more than up to the job!

As a full-time audio professional, I have spent at least 5-6 days a week in several professional studio facilities for the better part of the last 20 years. Having worked with hundreds of studio monitors (Genelec, Dynaudio, JBL Professional, KRK, Yamaha, Event, etc.), I chose the Alesis M1 Active 520 as the main monitoring system for my home project studio because of the Alesis name and the sound quality of these speakers for cost. They sounded great when they worked: neutral and accurate; never any surprises when I heard my work in other studios with much nicer/expensive professional monitors. When I auditioned these in a brick and mortar store, the salesperson at Guitar Center in Southfield, MI called these and their big brother, the M1 Active 620, "boomerangs", because they almost always came back. Unfortunately, I didn't listen to him. I used these for about 6 months and was very happy with them. I stored them in the original packaging in a closet with all of my other equipment when my home studio was converted into a nursery for our baby and moved them to another studio after about 6-7 months. Upon reinstalling them in the new studio, I powered them up and one of them turn-on, but the LED on one of the monitors was red, instead of blue. I called Alesis support and they said that they could not help me as the speakers were a month out of warranty, which is understandable. I asked the tech if this was a common issue and he said an emphatic "no". After getting off the phone, I Googled the problem, and sure enough, it is a common issue with these studio monitors! Take a look at the Alesis website, there is a large supply of these units in the refurb area. Why? Because the quality of these units is lacking! I'm guessing that if these were still under warranty, Alesis may have stood behind their product and replaced or repaired my unit. However, when the market is crowded with many options for low-cost, bang for the buck studio monitors, Alesis should know better than to put a piece of garbage on the market. If you are considering these lemons for whatever reason, stay away! Instead, opt for similar products from Event, M-Audio or KRK; I have worked in edit suites equipped with these monitors that have been in operation for several years and the aforementioned brands have offered bang for the buck just as good as Alesis, with proven durability after being used day after day for years on end. Don't waste your time with these studio monitors, there are many higher-quality alternatives on the market for the same price.

Can not get rid of the buzz

    By Jim-aGuLB

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 520 75W Active Near-Field Reference Monitor Pair:

Got a new pair, sounded pretty good but I got a buzz on one side when the bass hits hard, thinking it was overloading I lowered the bass to get the buzz to go away, but the more I use it the more buzz there is. I switched channels and it followed the speaker.I've tried to call tech support at Alesis but I never get through and they do not call back. For quality I give it a low mark because Alesis just isn't helping. I may have done something to them and I'm willing to pay to send them to have them checked out but if they do not call me how am I going to get it fixed?

    Great features

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 520 75W Active Near-Field Reference Monitor Pair:

After opening the box, I set them up and did a quick mix using the default settings. I played them back in my car and noticed that the mix was a bit on the bright side. I engaged the treble boost feature...re-mixed the song and got much better results. Great speakers for the money with good features and very user friendly.

I bought these thinkin that they would be fine. Nothing special cuz I jus hated the monitors I had before. When I got them last night man..... it blew my mind. I thought it took a lot of money to get quality like this. I'm gonna cop a pair of the more powerful set too. These are hot

    Owned for years

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 520 75W Active Near-Field Reference Monitor Pair:

The rating I gave these speakers may seem weird to you, as will this review. The speakers, in general, are fine. The blue light changes to red when the speaker clips, which is nice... however these speakers cannot handle a very high SPL. What is odd about this speaker is that I am TOTALLY UNABLE TO MIX with them. Everything I do to the mix sounds good. Why is this a problem? Because when I burn a CD and take it to my car, the mix is utter crap. Utter Crap. So I go back, and I listen to the CD through these speakers and it sounds fine. Ok... So I started writing down adjustments in my car that I needed to make. I make them and the mix sounds better, but it's guess work. You don't get an accurate image with these at all. I have no idea why. I just can't mix with them.Fair warning.

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 520 75W Active Near-Field Reference Monitor Pair:

Not a very good set of monitors. It has a high pitched tone when it is on that can be very irritating. Also the power lights dim when the speaker is working at half volume suggesting that it is loading the supply.Alesis tech support says these are not issues and is perfectly normal for this monitor - go figure. Guess they set their product expectations quite low...

hit the mark and exceeded my expectations

    By RockGearReviews.com

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 520 75W Active Near-Field Reference Monitor Pair:

My home studio needed some quality monitors, but nothing as big and bulky as an 8" Goliath. So I headed on over to the local music store to take a listen to some smaller options. These Alesis speakers hit the mark and exceeded my expectations. Here's what I love about them: after mixing a couple tracks at home and comparing them to tracks done in my commercial studio, I was stunned. The home studio mix was three times better! Unbelievable, I know. But it's the truth. The bass was tighter despite these monitors only having a 5" driveer. And the highs aren't all hyped up like some of the more popular monitors on the market. The best part is the selectable bass control on the back. I needed it because I mix in the corner of a room. The option to roll the lows off and control them more precisely was just what I needed. That option alone makes these the perfect choice for any home studio. Go try them yourself. You won't be let down.
