Quick and effortless plug-n-play monitors. I record with a home studio in Audacity, and the M1Active was recognized alongside my Behringer Xenyx which also has a USB interface (I have a laptop with Windows XP). The change is definitely there because I used to be dealing with my comp's built-in speakers. Everything sounds like it should, and I'm even hearing nuances I've never noticed before. Great flat response for accurate mixing. The Bass Boost feature is phenomenal, too - not overwhelming like you'll get with a lot of these units. Listened to a U2 playlist on my computer today and the sound was massive. Wow! Granted, I am in a medium-scale apartment, so this is more suited for that kind of intimate application. These obviously won't put out the loudest sound but they work very well for what I do.

These monitors are junk, there's simply no other way to describe them. The sound quality is flat and lifeless, the highs are muffled and the bass is distorted and flubby. I didnt have much time to evaluate these, as the right channel/speaker blew out less than a week after I bought them. Summation: Very poor quality masked by a good name. I expected a lot more from Alesis. My local GC made everything right. GC has a great return policy, but if not for that, this purchase would have been a total loss.

perfect product

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

excellent product - great monitors - plus great USB interface - forget Maudio, forget guitar snake - this does it all, with stereo in and out, plus it is a great pair of studio monitors - even the volume knob (which is also on/off switch) is rubber coated like pro gear, Every thing about this product is heavy and pro quality. Very well packed. Mac and Windows compatible. highly recommended - not sure why this is not more well known (probably because it makes multiple other items obsolete and unnecessary)

Exactly What I Was Looking For!

By The Chief Beat Thief

from McLean, VA

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

These economical mini-monitors sound great and pack a surprising punch. They have a variety of inputs (see pics) and are perfect for a home studio setup, especially if you're like me and you need to take a break from the headphones from time to time. Don't worry, they get plenty loud. For the money, these speakers are well-designed and an exceptional value. If you're looking for cost-effective studio monitors without compromising sound, look no further...and buy these!

Why is the price so cheap?

By Dave

from Philadelphia, PA

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

It doesn't matter how good your monitors sound, it matters how accurate they are, and these have a pretty flat, true sounding frequency response. I needed studio monitors so I could mix my project for school at home. I thought these would be thin or muddy sounding because of the price but I was definitely wrong. Also you're getting very accurate dynamics with these. I eventually upgraded to much more expensive monitors and I realized I really didn't need to, although its still nice to see how your mix sounds on different monitors. My only concern is that the frequency response cuts out at 80hz so your not hearing all the low end so you may want to buy a subwoofer or studio head phones to get all the low end. I would suggest these to anyone needs low priced accurate monitors and has a small room that they mix in.

Nice Studio Monitors

By Alcides Duverge

from Miami, Florida

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

I have a home studio and record my own songs as a hobby, so I found myself in the need of buying a Studio Monitors that fit my needs. This ones are pretty amazing, not only for the price but for the quality. Good response at high and low frecuencys. I love the option of the usb port conexion (no need for intalation's cds, it's plug and play!). For the conexion with my audio interface I had to buy two 1/4" RCA Cables that are not included in the package. As a person in a budget this monitors are definitively the right choice.

Big sound in a small, inexpensive package

By Miles

from Crescent City, Ca

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

These were easy to set up and get going. The moment music started coming out I was surprised at how loud and clear these monitors were. I immediately noticed sound nuances I hadnt heard before, as they actually made the music sound better. You can find a lot of good studio monitors but for less than $100 good luck finding anything that sounds like this.

Great monitors

By Jesse

from Rochester

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

If you're on a tight budget and looking to move away from those cheap computer speakers that you have to plug into the headphone port, then these are the speakers for you. I got these with my M-box 2 recording package and they're simply great. They have two 1/4" inputs (left and right), and a usb connection for high quality audio. I use them for listening to music, monitoring when I'm recording, and even if I'm watching youtube videos. They work for everything. The sound is crisp, clean highs, deep lows, and nothing but good sound.

Impressed for not much $$$

By Reno J

from San Antonio, Texas

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

I was using an Altec Lansing computer speaker setup (subwoofer + 2 satellites) as my studio monitor. They sounded great with plenty of volume, but I feared my mixes were being "colored" by speakers with bass & treble controls designed to make "already processed" music sound good. I wanted something with a "flat" response, but didn't have a lot of money to spend. So, I bought the Alesis M1 Active 320 USB to see how "studio monitor" sound would differ from "computer speaker" sound. Since the Alesis had no subwoofer & puny woofers, I didn't expect much bass. I was wrong. The M1 doesn't have as much bass as the Altecs with subwoofer, but what bass they do have is plenty adequate & much tighter. The whole sound is less muddy and more well defined from top to bottom, and I think that's the whole point. I know one could spend hundreds more for better monitors, but I'm no pro. For the price & for my needs, these work very well.

great for the $

By dick danger

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

These are nice little speaks; there's a bass boost and a volume control that's right there handy so i can switch back and forth easily between the headphones and the external speakers. The sound is crisp yet warm, and in a small space you can get pretty true sound without blasting your eardrums out. Great bargain for a small demo studio. Love'em so far!

Great Product

By Dan L.

from Chicago, IL

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

I've owned these for over a year now. I primarily use them as a small, portable, durable & good-sounding monitor alongside my MV-8800 & small Korg synths. The monitors deliver a combination of portable size & weight and a surprisingly full & punchy sound. These have held up to being thrown around countless times in a backpack ... they still look and sound great. I'd recommend these monitors to anyone.

Bang for the buck

By Nikko

from Fernley NV

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

They are nice. I have to say I am mildly impressed with the quality of sound. Obviously there isn't any super bass with these given there size and only 10W of built in amplification is a touch weak however they are accurate and lets face it that's why you buy them. The mulitpul hookups are nice though I personaly found the USB to be extreamly noisy. Overall a great entry level product and worth the money if your not willing to put big money into monitors.

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

You definitely get what you pay for. If you are looking for a decent pair of affordable computer speakers go for it,but if you are looking for "Monitors" to actually work with sound to do mixing or mastering....save your money and look for something better.

Terribly Built, Mine have issues after only 1 year...

By Pete Wild

from Ashfield, MA

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

Only 12 months after I bought a pair of these (exactly when the 1 year warranty expires!), the left speaker on a regular basis, after just a few minutes of listening at moderate volumes, dropped down in level by about 10db below the output of the right speaker, causing a severe and distracting balance issue, that can only be remedied by turing the volume knob way up on the right speaker (the speaker which houses all the inputs, outputs, and amplifier stages). That would temporarily kick the left speaker back into gear and resolve the balance issue, but the problem will return with a few minutes of listening at regular volumes. I am an audio engineer who troubleshoots complex audio systems on a regular basis, and trust me, I eliminated the possibility of it being a bad cable or audio source. These speakers are cheaply built and I don't trust that they'll work for more than a year or so. I called and the technical support personnel at Alesis did nothing to help, except direct me to take them into have them fixed on my own dime at an authorized repair facility two states away, in New Jersey! (I live in Massachusetts). To sum it up, I wish I hadn't spent my hard earned money on an Alesis product.

Great little guys!

By Mikey

from Key West, FL

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

I got these with a recording bundle that had mics and pro tools. I have had them for almost 2 years now and can't complain. One thing that was odd in the beginning was that there was a crackle sound in one speaker. I didn't know what caused it, and it went away after 2 days. Perhaps it was the speaker cone breaking in to use (if you will)? For rock music I think they are perfect. I personally produce very bass/bottom heavy techno and therefore need something with a bigger wolfer/wider range of sub frequency. I must say though that for the past 2 years I have successfully made house/techno on them and gotten nothing but great feedback on my mixes. I also just plain old take my time when it comes to mixing down. Anyways, for music that doesn't typically call for unusually low lows (rock, jazz etc...) they will be perfect! For those who make hip hop or EDM, you will find that they are great in a pinch with some careful assumption on your part when creating, mixing and mastering the low end, but ultimately you will call for more sub. I say assumption because they really don't reach lower than 80HZ very accurately at all, but them again they weren't made to. So, that really isn't a design flaw, it's just understanding what you are buying. These things have fallen (while connected) off my my desk many times because I live in a zoo and still work fine. The 1/8 wire that connects the speakers seems cheap but hasn't broken or bent after falling multiple times. The rubber knob up front has a nice feel and the diverse hooks up in the back leaves you with alot of options. They are also ready out of the box with no explanation on "how to" at all. So, just plug them in via USB and enjoy! These are great speakers and I will keep mine around as a second audio opinion on all my mixes!

BUY THESE MONITORS!

By Marc Whitmore

from Cleveland, OH

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

I'm an audiophile on a budget, so I figured I'd give these a shot. They are amazing! The high's are so crisp. The only thing they lack is putting out really low frequency bass. But they have 3" woofers, so you can't expect much. I recommend these monitors to anyone!

Unexpected!

By Juline Hobbs

from Valley Springs, CA

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

WOW! So i asked for these monitors for Christmas and wasn't really expecting that much and was even planning on returning them before i got them...but MAN when i plugged these suckers in i was blown away!!! They sound AMAZING! Especially for what they are priced at! Tons of bass and really nice clean, clear sound! I have to say they don't sound as good through the 1/8th inch input jack as they do through the usb connection. That TOTALLY cleaned up the sound from its muddiness. But i don't see why you would buy these and not use the usb option for your studio anyways. Anyhow i love these speakers and will never return them unless of course they break before the 30 day return policy. If you don't have a lot of money to spend and you want some quality studio monitors than i would DEFINITELY recommend these bad boys! Rock on!
