Overview

Alesis M1 Active 320 powered monitor speakers make a lot of sense on your studio desktop and for field recording and other traveling audio engineers. The Alesis monitors connect via USB to your laptop or computer for plug-and-play listening. These compact speakers are equipped with I/O for connecting a keyboard, mic preamp, guitar effects, mixer, and other audio components for easy computer recording.

M1 Active 320 monitor speakers deliver 16-bit/44.1-48kHz audio quality through a USB 1.1 port--without the need for special drivers. A Bass Boost switch increases the low-end for monitoring in big spaces. Besides the USB cable, the I/O includes quality 1/4" plugs and standard RCA jacks, a TRS headphone output, two unbalanced 1/4" phone jacks inputs, a stereo 1/8" mini-jack input, and stereo RCA inputs. Another nice benefit is that each monitor speaker is magnetically shielded, so you won't have to worry about placing them near TVs or computers.

Quick and effortless plug-n-play monitors. I record with a home studio in Audacity, and the M1Active was recognized alongside my Behringer Xenyx which also has a USB interface (I have a laptop with Windows XP). The change is definitely there because I used to be dealing with my comp's built-in speakers. Everything sounds like it should, and I'm even hearing nuances I've never noticed before. Great flat response for accurate mixing. The Bass Boost feature is phenomenal, too - not overwhelming like you'll get with a lot of these units. Listened to a U2 playlist on my computer today and the sound was massive. Wow! Granted, I am in a medium-scale apartment, so this is more suited for that kind of intimate application. These obviously won't put out the loudest sound but they work very well for what I do.

These monitors are junk, there's simply no other way to describe them. The sound quality is flat and lifeless, the highs are muffled and the bass is distorted and flubby. I didnt have much time to evaluate these, as the right channel/speaker blew out less than a week after I bought them. Summation: Very poor quality masked by a good name. I expected a lot more from Alesis. My local GC made everything right. GC has a great return policy, but if not for that, this purchase would have been a total loss.

These are simply not good speakers/monitors for any type of production work. The sound is horrible. I wouldn't even buy these for children.

USB interface is nice, but cut some corners.

      By Kevin Harrelson

      from Colorado Springs

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

It is natural to compare this to the Alesis Elevate 3 monitors. They are very close. The size is the same, the drivers are the same size, and they look similar. However, internally, they are very different. Simply stated, the Elevate 3 monitors are much better than these. First, the good things. If you need a USB interface, the one built-in to this thing seems quite nice. It will even let you record (not that I tried this, but you are supposed to be able to do this). This also has multiple inputs! You can drive this thing with USB, 1/8", RCA, and 1/4" jacks all at the same time! Wow! That is nice. Now for the down side. When the volume was all the way down (should be off), you could still hear some low-level muddy bass coming from the 1/8" jack. Also, the bass was a little muddy compared to the Elevate 3. Not that it was bad. But the Elevate 3 just sounded better for less money. By the way this does NOT use the same drivers at the Elevate 3. You can look in the back through the bass port, and see that the 3" drivers on this thing simply have a much smaller magnet. So, if you need a USB interface and/or the ability to drive monitors from multiple sources, this speaker is not bad. On the other hand, if you only have one analog source, go for the Elevate 3 -- better sound and less green.

      For Price A Good Buy

      By Anthony Moretti

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

The people that sit there and say these monitors suck are probably comparing them to monitors that cost 10 times the price. Would I rather be listening on a pair of in wall Adams or Dynaudios? Of course. But you get what you pay for with these, would not be in a professional music studio but for someone who doesn't want to pay a lot and wants something to listen to other than consumer speakers. If you pair it with a sub and know what your doing with these speakers they can work

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

The connections are great. It's pretty loud, I had a Fender Ultra Chorus amp, and it had the same sound from the Studio Monitors. That says it all! All of these Alesis Products are rock solid.

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

You definitely get what you pay for. If you are looking for a decent pair of affordable computer speakers go for it,but if you are looking for "Monitors" to actually work with sound to do mixing or mastering....save your money and look for something better.

      Fantastic, compact monitors

      By David Buker

      from Columbus, OH

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

I received these monitors yesterday and was immediately surprised by both their construction and audio quality. These monitors have a surprising amount of bass for their size (even without engaging the "bass Boost") and are also surprisingly loud. They are worth far more than their cost.

      Unexpected!

      By Juline Hobbs

      from Valley Springs, CA

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

WOW! So i asked for these monitors for Christmas and wasn't really expecting that much and was even planning on returning them before i got them...but MAN when i plugged these suckers in i was blown away!!! They sound AMAZING! Especially for what they are priced at! Tons of bass and really nice clean, clear sound! I have to say they don't sound as good through the 1/8th inch input jack as they do through the usb connection. That TOTALLY cleaned up the sound from its muddiness. But i don't see why you would buy these and not use the usb option for your studio anyways. Anyhow i love these speakers and will never return them unless of course they break before the 30 day return policy. If you don't have a lot of money to spend and you want some quality studio monitors than i would DEFINITELY recommend these bad boys! Rock on!

      BUY THESE MONITORS!

      By Marc Whitmore

      from Cleveland, OH

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

I'm an audiophile on a budget, so I figured I'd give these a shot. They are amazing! The high's are so crisp. The only thing they lack is putting out really low frequency bass. But they have 3" woofers, so you can't expect much. I recommend these monitors to anyone!

      Great little guys!

      By Mikey

      from Key West, FL

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 320 USB Studio Monitor Pair:

I got these with a recording bundle that had mics and pro tools. I have had them for almost 2 years now and can't complain. One thing that was odd in the beginning was that there was a crackle sound in one speaker. I didn't know what caused it, and it went away after 2 days. Perhaps it was the speaker cone breaking in to use (if you will)? For rock music I think they are perfect. I personally produce very bass/bottom heavy techno and therefore need something with a bigger wolfer/wider range of sub frequency. I must say though that for the past 2 years I have successfully made house/techno on them and gotten nothing but great feedback on my mixes. I also just plain old take my time when it comes to mixing down. Anyways, for music that doesn't typically call for unusually low lows (rock, jazz etc...) they will be perfect! For those who make hip hop or EDM, you will find that they are great in a pinch with some careful assumption on your part when creating, mixing and mastering the low end, but ultimately you will call for more sub. I say assumption because they really don't reach lower than 80HZ very accurately at all, but them again they weren't made to. So, that really isn't a design flaw, it's just understanding what you are buying. These things have fallen (while connected) off my my desk many times because I live in a zoo and still work fine. The 1/8 wire that connects the speakers seems cheap but hasn't broken or bent after falling multiple times. The rubber knob up front has a nice feel and the diverse hooks up in the back leaves you with alot of options. They are also ready out of the box with no explanation on "how to" at all. So, just plug them in via USB and enjoy! These are great speakers and I will keep mine around as a second audio opinion on all my mixes!
