Highly recommended set for practice and recording

Comments about Alesis Forge 8-Piece Electronic Drum Kit:

The initial setup took a while as I am left handed.. However, right-handed players shouldn't have a problem assembling. It was well packed and all items clearly labeled. Out of the box, it sounds great through studio quality headphones, through a PA, or amp. I love the chrome drum frame.

It is completely customizable and allows many options for setup configurations. It is very solid once properly assembled. I was surprised at the quality... much better than Simmons or entry-level Roland. I haven't had an electronic drum set since my Roland kit back in 2001. What I like most is that I was able to integrate my existing Roland cymbal pad bass drum pedal/pad into the set, as well as midi my Alesis Performance Pad to add additional cymbals and percussion. It went from an 8-piece set to 18 piece. The expanded set allows for a more varied and interesting playing experience using a variety of cymbals.

Let me preface this by saying that I have been playing drums since 1981. I play progressive rock, jazz and metal, so I am no stranger to drumming. As far as playability, this set is tight. Yes it is all rubber heads, but it is an electronic drum set. If you want a real feel, get a real acoustic set. The the snare and tom pads are responsive and allow for fast and accurate playing. I read some negative reviews about the bass drum setup, but I have experienced no problems. It plays well when the pedal tension is properly set. Once you get accustomed to the hi-hat pedal and hats performance, doing tight hi-hat barks and chops is easy.

The Forge module itself is easy to operate, there's plenty of kits to fit whatever style you're looking for and it's easy to save custom setups. that was the first thing that I did... I created 10 custom setups with various voices and triggering settings.

As far as playing out with this set (or any electronic set), I don't think I would want to break it down, move it and set it up. Not that It wouldn't perform superbly for live use. 5 STARS!

Comments about Alesis Forge 8-Piece Electronic Drum Kit:

This kit has over 50 presets with 20 for you to fill, it sounds and looks legit and the module is really user friendly. I really like this set after owning a Yamaha DTX400 and hating electric kits because of that kit.

The Forge is the real deal, for the price, this kit rocks.
