A 24-bit USB recording interface.

The compact Alesis iO2 EXPRESS audio-recording interface is ideal for home studios and portable recording setups. The 2-channel USB interface for Mac and PC-based systems enables you to record at up to 24-bit resolution for input into virtually all DAW, recording, and performance software.

The Alesis i02 EXPRESS recording interface is small enough to comfortably fit into your mobile recording rig, laptop bag, or backpack, yet it contains high-quality components and circuitry suitable for the studio.

Flexible recording and playback
The i02 EXPRESS interface's discrete-design preamplifiers and true 48-volt phantom power ensure that you capture microphones' complete signal. High quality analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters ensure that every detail of your session or performance gets recorded – and played back on your monitoring system. It's class compliant, so you can use the plug-and-play Alesis iO2 EXPRESS with virtually any computer.

The iO2 EXPRESS is USB bus powered so you won't need to carry a bulky power supply, and its performance is optimized for minimal laptop battery drain so you'll be able to track long sessions and gigs remotely.

Complete iO
The iO2 EXPRESS has 2 input channels. Each channel has an XLR microphone input, a 1/4" TRS insert for external effects units, and a 1/4" TS jack that works with line-level sources and can accommodate direct connection of guitars.

The Alesis iO2 EXPRESS sends and receives 2 audio channels on a single USB cable for simple, universal interface. You can monitor your sessions on any studio monitoring or other loudspeaker system via dual 1/4" balanced outputs. For remote tracking and alternative playback, the iO2 EXPRESS has a 1/4" TRS headphone output.

The iO2 EXPRESS features traditional MIDI In and Out jacks for playing and controlling software with keyboard and pad controllers, workstations, and other MIDI-compatible instruments.

Level management
Each channel has a gain trim control, and there's a master level control for optimal gain staging. When monitoring on headphones, you'll appreciate the dedicated volume control.

You can also visually monitor levels and operation using the tricolor, stereo metering tree and lighted status indicators.

Complete the package
The Alesis iO2 EXPRESS comes complete with a copy of Steinberg Cubase LE digital audio workstation (DAW) software. Cubase is one of the most popular DAWs in the world thanks to its intuitive approach to composing, recording, editing, and mixing.

In addition to the included software, the Alesis iO2 EXPRESS is compatible with virtually all audio and MIDI software.

  • Good value for 24 bit recording and 48V phantom power XLR mic inputs

As reviewed by Cello on 6/28/2010

I purchased this interface so that I could use it as part of a mobile setup. The Alesis iO2 Express lacks the solid construction and digital i/o of the original iO2. While the Alesis iO2 Express feels kinda plasticy and lightweight, it seems to be built ok. The iO2 Express comes with a USB cable, a quick start guide and an installation DVD for Cubase LE (Win and Mac OS supported). I did not install the Cubase because I want to run the hardware in Cakewalk Sonar Home Studio 7 so that whatever I produce will be compatible with Sonar 8.5 Producer. To install the hardware you simply plug the interface into the computer via the USB cable to install the generic drivers. When I tested recording vocals using the generic drivers, latency was a big issue. The quick start guide suggests using ASIO4ALL drivers to deal with latency issues--consider installation of ASIO4All a must do item (http://www.asio4all.com). Once you install the ASIO4All drivers and configure them correctly within your DAW, the Alesis iO2 Express interface is quite usable for 24 bit recording with low latency. I give the Alesis iO2 Express 4 out of 5 stars. The unit lost a star for the plastic construction and the lack of a dedicated ASIO driver for the Alesis iO2 Express. Despite its shortcomings, for under $100, the Alesis iO2 Express is a very good value for a USB bus powered interface with 1/4 inch inputs and outputs, 2 XLR mic ins with 48 volts phantom power and midi in and out. Whether you are looking for an entry level 24 bit audio interface with "big boy" inputs and outputs or a second interface for a laptop, you'd be hard pressed to find a better value with all of these features.

  • Decent

As reviewed by Jacob on 7/13/2010

The unit has plenty of nice connections. Being USB powered is a huge plus as well. As for the construction, I would not recommend this unit for stage work but a desktop would be fine. The mic/guitar preamps do have noise if the gains are around 90% or above. This is fine because my guitar and even my dynamics do not need that much gain. This interface works seamlessly with Windows 7's proprietary drivers as well as AISO. On Linux it works with the OSS drivers. I have not tested it with Audacity yet. All around, I am pleased with this device.
