Improving with time!

First we have owned the Alesis IO|26 for nearly 6 months and even though we had some initial issues, they were easily worked out. For the potential buyer, note that our unit arrived with the old firmware loaded. The instructions (if you read them) actually warn you about this as they have free firmware updates on their website. We did experience the volume issue discribed below by another owner but overcame that with better cables. I can also configure an output port to drive the head phones (which is nice considering the output ports have more configuration control). All in all the unit has performed well for live use and we are about to use it in a studio environment due to its versatility.

Which Platform: PC or MAC

It is essential that reviewers note which computer platform (PC or MAC) and which operating system the are using. Otherwise readers can not know whether the concern is relevant!

Nice, but not easy

This interface started working out great. I use the MacPro and Cubase 4. The a/d converters are excellent- the sound is perfect. However, the drivers for this thing are terrible, atleast for Mac and Cubase. After a few months of owning it, I noticed that it would flutter out and I would have to pull the firewire plug and re-insert it. This went on for a while until the interface completely stopped working. I had to completely erase the drivers and re-install them twice. For some reason it's working fine now, but we will see. Make sure you get the updated drivers from the alesis website.

Drivers or firewire port are terrible

Had this thing for almost 2 years. Had problems with it on 4 different PC's but too late to return. Read about users with same problems I'm having using Sonar, Cubase, PC and MAC, don't know about other DAW's. Alesis firewire drivers shut down the audio engine in Sonar after 2-4 minutes. Have to unplug the device and replug (not supposed to with firewire but had no choice) or you can restart the whole computer. Replaced it with Mbox2Pro and M-Audio ProjectMix IO, both worked fine with same computers and software that I tried with the Alesis. Only the Alesis is so buggy/flakey that it's unusable. Would love to sell it for $50 to help recover some of what I wasted on this product. I loved Alesis products since the 80's until this product. I think it's firewire port is not fully compatible with true IEEE1394 standards. It makes an okay preamp though but too expensive for just that. Oh well, live and learn!!! DON'T BUY THIS!!!! Read on Internet BBS's that some people had luck with this but MANY didn't!!!!

COMPARE TO TASCAM

First. I am PC Laptop - Core2 Duo 2.2 GHz w/ 6MB L2 cache, 2 gig ram, 4 pin firewire, Vista Home Premiun Tower - DualCore 2.8 GHZ, Asus SLI motherboard, 3.25 gig RAM (that is what the computer sees), XP Home, SMP SeeSaw Pro(free download, lets me run Windows and all hardware drivers on one core, Cubase has a the other core to itself, drastically reduces hiccups and dropouts) I have MOTU 2408 w/ PCI324, Tascam US1641, and Alesis io26. Hands down, MOTU is the quickest and easiest to set up and use. Very stable multi-track recording. For 8 hours, continuously recorded live shows for local radio station using all 24 inputs(ADAT A/DD/A converter)But this will only work with a tower, monitor, keyboard and mouse. Efficient, bulky, not portable. 8.3 ms input latency, 8.1 ms output latency. Tascam US1641 - noisy with my laptop, fine with tower. Drivers will load CPU down about 40%. When multitrack recording and using outputs for live monitors, output latency changes drastically (about 80 ms) Audio quality is fine with my tower. Recorded 10 tracks simultaneously, computer froze after about an hour. Used system to run live show without any problems, including latency issues. 2.1 ms input latency, 11.2 ms output latency. LOWETS OVERALL LATENCY. io26 - noisy (quieter than Tascam) with laptop, drivers take up about 8% CPU. Haven't recorded a "song" longer than ten minutes using all 8 pre's, no ADAT inputs. no, none, zero, zip, nada issues. Tower - no noise. No problems. Just studio work using the built in pre's now. Latency so close to the MOTU, it ain't funny. Most portable with more ins than MOTU and Tascam. I use the Tascam more because of the lowest overall latency. 30% more CPU load for about 5ms less latency.
