Prior to buying this I was using a first generation M-Audio Axiom 61 controller. I travel quite a bit now and wanted a portable 25 note controller. I considered the newer Axiom Pro 25, but I realized that I don't use the knobs and other midi controls on my Axiom 61, so I opted for the Alesis Q25 because it simple, straight forward, and very compact since it doesn't have several knobs or sliders, just a conservative number of controls on the left of the unit.
Overall it's a great controller. It supports Aftertouch using the Data Entry slider, which is is actually kind of cool, different, and maybe a little experimental since most people expect Aftertouch on the keys rather than a slider.
The only issue I ran into is the first C# and second D# keys were getting stuck and the note wouldn't always release. Maybe it was a fluke with my unit. Since this is a relatively cheap controller and easy to take apart, plus I'm somewhat competent in my technical skills, I just popped the top and tightened some screws and now it's fine.
Despite my minor quirk with the keys, I think this is the way a 25 key controller should be made. No nonsense, no BS, no wasted desk space for a keyboard that has knobs you will never use. It's also very light weight which is great for traveling.
I'm quite sure I only paid $79 for this at my local Guitar Center. At the time I am writing this the price online is $99.
Bought it about two weeks ago... use it with Reason 5 on my laptop, and what else could I ask for? No it's not like my AKAI MPK49, but for what it is, I have no real complaints.. of course there are only 25 keys, which feel very light.. it is responsive, but to record true dynamics, you would want a controller with better keys... all in all, if you know what you're buying, you shall not be disappointed.
The reason I like this so much is that it has full sized keys while still being compact. I also love that it is simple to use and sturdy. It is a quality product for someone who is not a keyboardist first.
