With the Alesis ProTrack Stereo Digital Recorder you can capture live audio anywhere and anytime with the convenience of your iPod (Classic and 5th generation) and iPod nano (2nd or 3rd generation). Just slide your iPod into the recorder's integrated sled and you're ready to roll.
You can record audio without additional equipment using the built-in pair of condenser microphones fixed in XY configuration. ProTrack also gives you a pair of XLR inputs and one 1/4" line input so you can connect any professional sound source including external microphones. I was looking for a simple digital recorder to record training seminars and my music. After looking at the other portable digital recorders I noticed that they were limited in their recording capacity of only about 4 to 8 gigs. I already own an ipod that i do not use very much and it holds 20 gigs so I decided to give this system a try and I hve been very happy with the results. I use a samson wireless headset and I run the reciever into the ipod recorder. The recorder is set on mono and I use the limiter. Recording is too easy and I just take ipod out of the unit and plug it into my computer and the recording is automatically downloaded to itunes(too simple). I then burn a disc from itunes and distribute the cd's to my employees for training. The sound quality is first rate. I have used this with acoustic guitar and vocals but not yet with my band. The only drawbacks with this is just the build quality. I have not had any issues yet but because of the all plastic construction I can see how durability can be an issue. Other than the quality issue I am very happy with this ipod recorder.
...I bought it to replace my older Belkin iPod mic that had died on me. As of yet, it's improved the sound quality of our rehearsal recordings and is much more reliable. Partially, I believe this is a reflection of the ProTrack's power adapter providing the charge for my iPod so that it's not draining precious battery during rehearsals. So far, it's done its job, and done it well. If your band's rehearsals are LOUD, the Auto-Limiter switch comes in extremely handy as it balances the recording to a listenable volume while retaining the integrity of the recording. It seems to be worth the cost...
P.S. Pretty good quality recordings without even utilizing the XLR mic inputs... the onboard mic works very well.
Works great with little effort. Took it to rehearsal and was very happy with the recording. Backed up Ipod to Itunes and then imported it to Pro tools LE and cut and added effects. with no manual reading. Then uploaded to My Space. If it broke I would get another one. That is why I purchased the warranty coverage.
