8-channel mixer with built-in effects, EQ, and USB.
The Alesis MultiMix 8USB Mixer with USB and DSP is a compact 8-channel desk. It combines studio-quality components and effects processing with solid construction and a sweet price.
USB port adds computer connectivity for plug-and-play Mac and PC operation. Stereo USB input and output routes the main ouput and the 2-track return through the USB port in 16-bit, 44.1 kHz stereo digital audio, which enables you to use the MultiMix as a soundcard.
4 high-gain preamps with phantom power Equipped with 4 high-gain mic/line (XLR and 1/4" balanced) inputs with phantom power, 2 stereo balanced 1/4" line inputs, plus 100 onboard preset effects including reverbs, delays, chorus, flanging, pitch, and multi-effects. You can select one on-board effect and control its level with the Aux B knob for each channel. Or you can use an external effects processor by sending a signal to the external unit via the Aux Send A and returning it via Aux Return A.
Alesis MultiMix 8 USB additional I/O Other I/O includes 2 aux sends (Aux 1 is pre/post switchable, Aux 2 is post and can send to onboard or external effects), 2 stereo aux returns, 2-track stereo RCA I/O, separate 1/4" balanced main and monitor and headphone outs. Other features include separate pan/balance, listen/solo in place, mute/bus, and 3-band EQ per channel with high/low shelving and mid bandpass/reject.
The MultiMix 8 USB gives you 8 audio inputs in all: 4 mono XLR or 1/4" TRS plus 2 x stereo 1/4" (4 total). If you want to bring external audio sources into a recording or live mix, you can do it in several different ways. Using the 2-Track In, you can add a tape deck, ADAT, CD player or other source to the mix. The 2-Track In also can be used to entertain the audience with a CD as the band is setting up for a live show. The Aux Returns can be used as additional audio inputs when you are not using them for effects.
The MultiMix 8USB ships with Cubase LE for powerful audio/MIDI recording and VST hosting.

Excellent buy
I bought this mixer to use as a USB interface for my laptop. I had previously been using the M-Audio Fast Track Pro for this. The Alesis runs circles around the Fast Track in terms of features, sound quality, and overall ease of use (for the exact same price). The effects aren't great, but they're better than some. The EQ functions are fantastic. The only gripe I have is with the software. The Cubase-LE program is not very self-explanatory, and there is no software documentation with the product (however, the manual for the unit itself is very concise and informative). I'm currently using Adobe Audition 2.0 with Amplitube for effects. Seems to be a pretty good combination for this unit.

Not Vista Compatible
I loved this for the small time recording you can get decent takes and the effects are almost better then the crap ones cubase le gives you. Upgrading Cubase is your only choice if you lack pedals. The biggest problem I have is that when I upgaded computers and got the visita premium home edition the cubase program seems to dislike working. So even though the board and the computer communicate the program and the board do not.

WOW
I used this at my friends house a few weeks ago, and it is ALOT more than what you pay for! The USB connection made me think "meh.." but after trying it out, it really skips alot of steps in recording, and also allows for fast recording and uploading onto the web and such.. great tool! Get it now

Great mixer for entry-to-mid level users
I just purchased my Alesis MultiMix 8USB yesterday, and I must say I'm very impressed. This is the first mixer I purchased, but being accustomed to big studio mixers I wasn't sure if this should be 1st mixer for my personal studio. I'm glad that I made this purchase! The built-in fx are cool, EQ sensitivity is EXCELLENT, as well as the plug-in-play feature. This is a definate MUST-BUY for anyone who's looking to buld their own studio.

A great value for a small price
I purchased this item to use with one of my 4-laptop units that I use for portable recording. I wanted something that I could capture more than 4 lines at one time. The unit is built very well so I think it will last for a long time if used properly. The unit uses USB connectivity which makes it a simple plug and play operation. The unit has onboard effects that are usable but I would recommend using something better if you have it available. There is a 3-band EQ on each channel which is something I needed in a small package (I tend to like manual EQ over using software). The unit comes with Cubase LE which is a very usable recording program if you need a nice portable mixer or a small recording DAW for demos at home you will be very satisfied with this product.
