Hard disk recording and editing, digital signal processing, and CD burning in one easy-to-use box.
The Alesis MasterLink ML-9600 Master Disk Recorder is an easy-to-use tool to tackle a tough job. CD24 technology allows you to record and play back 24-bit, 96kHz CDs using inexpensive CDR media. Its CD recorder is seamlessly linked with a built-in 40GB hard disk recorder and essential tools for digital signal processing, editing, and mastering. Record direct-to-disk using any of the four standard sample rates (44.1, 48, 88.2, or 96kHz) and choice of three word lengths (16, 20, or 24 bit). Built-in signal processing includes equalization, compression, normalization, and peak limiting. Finally, push one button and burn your master onto CD in either Red Book or CD24 format. CD24 format uses the ISO 9660 format and standard audio file formats so its discs can be read by Macintosh, Windows, and Unix computer platforms. Most mastering facilities now accept MasterLink disks, making it an industry-standard mix-down device!
For live recording, there's nothing better-record entire performances in stunning 24-bit/96kHz clarity without ever stopping to change tapes or CDs.
As a songwriter's tool, the MasterLink is perfect for capturing every improvisational idea that any songwriting session can produce. In addition, it is the perfect device to store any songwriter's entire collection of work. Build a custom demo CD at a moment's notice!

The Studio Standard
We originally picked up the Masterlink to have the ability to play CD24's (which more and more of our clients are shipping us now). The sound quality is fantastic, the converters are surprisingly top-notch, and the DPS functions are simple to learn and navigate. The Masterlink has now become an integral part of our mastering chain; sending the 2-buss mix through an Avalon 747 compressor/EQ, then into the Masterlink. While the Alesis ML offers ample compression and EQ, we generally perform those functions with the Avalons, and simply rely on the Masterlink's excellent limiter to catch any peaks which might slip through the chain unexpectedly. The individual track gain adjustments and ability to create several custom playlists are indispensable tools during mastering, allowing you the freedom to match adjacent track levels and make critical track sequencing decisions with ease. The most important part is the sound, and for that the Masterlink should be considered a studio standard. Four years; no problems at all - we love it!

A great piece of hardware for the home studio
I do not have this unit yet, but I will purchase it soon. I communicate with many artists in my local area and on many internet forums. The popular trend I always seem to hear is how good the Alesis Masterlink 9600 is. The unit is very affordable and it can store 40GB of audio (around 75 hours of material)! The unit can burn Redbook quality CD's Which is needed if you work for any clients. The Alesis MasterLink 9600 also has high quality mastering tools which will help free up system resources on your digital audio workstation. I plan on ordering a unit later this week.
