Great for practice and skill boost
This set isn't made for triggering, but the brain is great! You can hook up almost any pads to it and it will work. The pads on this kit resemble to Roland quality without the Roland price. This is a great beginners kit, or for someone that just moved to an apartment and can't bring their acoustic set with them. The sounds are perfect, and it is durable to even the most hardcore drumming styles. The pads are made of real drum shells so you can depend on them, unlike the cheap rubber pads that tend to give out easy.
I plan on getting this very soon!

Gettin' sweaty!
If you are looking for a drumset to play on stage, this probably isn't the set for you... but, if you need a semi-quiet practice kit that has a good sound or a drumset to help you compose your music without the hassles of micing a real set, then this one is the ticket. The pads feel alive and trigger really well even though the non-varying sizes are difficult to accept considering the difference in the sizes of real drums. Once you get used to this, it will help you hit the center of your real drums more accurately. There are enough patches to allow you to write plenty of sets (21). I give it 4 stars because it still sounds like triggered drums. Alesis has given us a wonderful tool and at a reasonable price. Get one and get to sweatin'!

nothing better for price bravo alesis
ive had this set for a year now and like it very much im a advanced player and haven't felt like the set is slowing me down just my foot pedal i already had.don't be fooled get real drum heads it makes all the diference not those rubber things.there are plenty of quality sounds for each drum, cymbals 100 for each and they sound real .one thing that is great is you can really get to find out what sounds you like by changing them kinda like going into a store with 100 different drum sets .the drum set is very sturdy and well built take somtime to use the brain so you dont miss anything.the only soso part is the hihat foot switch it only works open or closed no in between.I recomend using dual zone pad as a high tom making the rim a ride cymbal leaving you with two crash cymbals unless you have $2000 to spend buy this and if you have the cash buy there real brass cymbal kit too awsome idea

Incredibly fun and Easy to Play!
I used to be "anti-digital" when it came to playing drums. I always felt that the warmth and resonance were lost in an electronic kit. Then,I began to see the advantages of a digital kit when it came to recording at home. So, after much research, I decided to get the Alesis Dm5 Pro. The first thing I noticed is that- it sounded great! The voices in the extremely versatile sound module are full of warmth and have lost nothing in the translation. I've had a great time programming my own custom kits and being able to create a kit with sounds to match what I'm recording helps to make the finished product sound professional.
If I have any complaints, it would be that the footswith for the hi-hat cuts out a lot and can be quite annoying, so I'm considering using a real hi-hat for back-up.
Overall, I'm very pleased w/my decision to "go digital". The Alesis Dm5 is awesome!

Great Kit!!!
I bought this kit because I live in a townhouse and absolutely love it. For the price it's easily in competition with other more expensive drum kits. The brain has tons of inputs/outputs and drum sounds (although most of the preprogrammed kits are kind of cheesy). I think the drum pads actually feel more realistic than Roland's mesh pads (plus, because they use standard drum heads, they're cheaper and easier to replace). The variable velocity triggers work very well for both the drums and the cymbals. Also, there's a cross talk setting in the brain to prevent pads from picking up other sounds. I would make a couple of suggestions, though. First, I added a Yamaha TP60 pad (little rubber pad) next to my snare drum for doing rim sticks (the pads are only single trigger). Second, I bought an extra cymbal so I could have two crashes. Two complaints: there isn't any pre-programmed drumless music to practice with and playing an open high hat can be a bit dodgy. All in all I'm highly pleased with this product.

Had a bad experience
I bought this set because I purchased a Simmons 7 set that was dead on arrival. I thought Alesis quality would be better. It was however, it still did not function correctly. The DM5 brain would need to be power cycled every 20 minutes and when I would, it would reverse the hi hat. Open was closed and closed was open. The quality felt much better than that of the Simmons set however, with the technical difficulties, I sent it back and did not want another one. Advice is....play it like crazy in the 30 day warranty period just to make sure all is ok.

Best "bang for your buck" - without a doubt
I've been playing professionally for over 15 years and a total of 22 years. I own a DW Acoustic Kit and a Roland TD-20S e-kit. One of my Students bought this e-kit and I have to say that it's the best e-kit for the money out there - period. With extremely good sounds and accurate feeling pads, I have to say I was truly impressed. The DM-5 Module has four (4) additional trigger inputs for expansion and my Student has added an extra tom, ride, and crash to his kit. The only cons would be "cable management" (nothing some zip ties can't clean up) and could use another center brace for added stability. In fact, I'm so impressed with this kit that I'm going to purchase the DM-5 Pro Kit with Surge Cymbals when it comes out later this Summer for my Students to use (and me too!). I will definitely rate this 5-stars for value, quality, and sound. Good job Alesis for keeping the "cost" down so aspiring musicians can afford a good, quality e-kit, without breaking the bank.

Alesis DM5 Pro Kit
For the money, this is the best kit. You do not get partial open hi hat sounds with the supplied pedal, but you do get open, closed and foot splash sounds. The module took a while to figure out. Especially in control of mix, volume and cross talk. Once you dial it in, it is great! The cymbal pads need to be upgraded. I made my own ecymbals! One of the positive features is that you have 12 inputs! Wish it had more direct outs. You can purchase the dual zone snare pad and use the extra pad as a tom.

GREAT SET!!!
This is an overall great set. I did my research when looking for a good electronic set. This seemed to be the one everyone pointed to and they were right. It is perfect for a beginner! The combinations of sounds seems almost endless. A great buy for anyone looking to play!!
