I bought htis on an impilse after falling in love with it while looking for something else. This is probably the best drum machine on the market right now and i strongly encourage you to buy it. Its killer out-of-the-box set ups and its fully custimizable. The lights are a dome visual for live shows and the large LED makes aeverything so much easier. IF you are looking for a great, cheap, productio station for hip-hop, rap, techno, electronica, groove, anything, i strongly suggest this.

MPC on the fly.

By Kyle Sawatzke

from MN

I bought the XR20 for travel use and it has been a great companion. I have owned an MPC1000 for a few years and it wasn't practical to bring across the country. I have been extremely pleased with this Drum Machine as it tides me over perfectly when I am away from my higher end equipment. Decent build quality and responsive pads. Honestly you can't really go wrong with the XR20.

Awesome Product

By Joshua Yamasaki

from Yuma AZ

I bought a used one from guitar center.com, it came in great shape for being used and I'm totally satisfied. For the price, it does amazing stuff. I don't think enough people realize how easy and fun a drum machine (or MPC) is. All of my skeptical musician type friends have said, "Ok, its actually pretty sweet." To which I of course replied, "Right?" Figuring out how to use it isn't too bad, but your satisfaction will double if you read the manual while first playing around. I've been traveling a lot, and its been great to take everywhere. The option to run on batteries is really nice. I have used Apple's Garage Band a lot in the past and I look forward to adding my drum tracks to my previously made songs. So far I've just recorded my songs (from the xr20) into garage band so I have an MP3 of my work. Also its great for jamming with (guitar or any other instrument). As far as features, it does a lot for being one little machine (EQ, panning, different time signatures..). The only thing I would add, would be to allow more than one synth to play at a time. I cheat by assigning the "1 shot" as all the same sound, and then tuning each pad to a different note so I have at least one full octave+ of a different instrument than the "synth". Essentially you have 3 tracks layered going on, "Drums", "1 Shots" and "Synth". Being able to mute each as you please is really fun and a great way to make beats more exciting. I love a great product and this is a great product.

Great Drum Machine

By gristle

from Rip City

Have had this for a while now, used almost every day for the past 6 months or so. Sounds are phenomenal, they are studio quality and very hip hop usable. Very easy to use machine once you spend some time with it. Yea, it's not an MPC and you can't sample any other tracks but it says so right in the description so comparing an mpc to this is useless. Awesome for beginners and great for all users. I would say this is really utilized for hip hop. The one complaint I have is the amount of recording space it has, there should be alot more tracks to use. 99 beats get made quickly. Ok, the synth sucks. The sounds blow in comparison to the drum sounds. The one hits are awesome. I take this thing with me everywhere. Another thing, if the battery gets low the screen will lose the info on it. The XR isn't broken you just need to hook up to the power cord or put fresh batteries in.

Awesome D.J. effects enhancer

By Dj Magic 1

from Westland, MI

I just recently purchased the XR20 because I was looking for some inexpensive equipment to start making my own beats from and I didn't want to spend a thousand dollars or more on an MPC just yet. I still haven't explored all the facets of this machine yet but when I heard some of the beats and samples that were already pre-stored in the unit I decided to use it the next time I Dee-Jayed at a party as an effects unit, and the response that I got was amazing! I Still will be using this for the purpose I bought it for. but I just wanted to say that the 1 shot effects are tight and I really like the way they enhance my music when I'm mixing! Well worth the investment!

Good but not great.

By bandeeto

from Lehi, Ut

First the bad: 1. Can't load new sounds into the machine. 2. All sections of a pattern must be the same length. 3. Not 24 bit sound compatable. The Good: 1. Lots of decent sounds already loaded, especially if your thing is hip-hop or similar. 2. The "song" function is easy to use and very useful. Perfect for song writers that don't need pro quality mixdowns. 3. Compact and easy to use. 4. Difficult, or impossible, to get an expressive drum track using the somewhat unresponsive pads (ie I can make a loud sound, and a soft one, but in between sounds are hit and miss). Final word: I'm keeping it though I will get a full workstation ASAP. Something with more natural drum sounds and that has room for adding even more. I contacted Akai and they said that this machine would not have this capability. Too bad. Otherwise a good basic tool. Good thing it's cheap.
