The Akai Professional MPK249 is a performance pad and keyboard controller that combines deep software integration, enhanced workflow, and core technologies from the iconic line of MPC workstations. Each member of Akai Pro's MPK series comes fully loaded with a comprehensive interface for manipulating virtual instruments, effect plugins, DAWs, and more. MPK249 features 49 semi-weighted keys with aftertouch, 8 assignable knobs, faders, and switches, 16 MPC-style pads with RGB feedback, and onboard transport buttons. Three banks expand the number of knobs, faders, and switches (up to 24 each), and four pad banks expand the number of pads (up to 64 total). Plus, MPK249 is optimized to interface directly with your Mac or PC with USB power and plug-and-play connectivity.

Made To Play
MPK249 comes equipped with 49 semi-weighted, full-size keys and a premium piano-style keybed for unprecedented response and natural feel. Each key is velocity-sensitive and outfitted with aftertouch for dynamic, expressive performances and recordings. In addition, onboard Octave Up and Down controls allow players to access the entire melodic range; play bass lines, piano harmony, solo leads and much more.

Genuine MPC Functionality
Classic MPC Swing, MPC Note Repeat, MPC Full Level, and 16 Levels are all onboard for further inspiration. With MPK249, musicians and composers can incorporate genuine MPC workflow into their productions and create with the tools that producers have relied on for years: MPC Swing lets MPK249 users obtain that tight, organic groove that made Akai Pro's groundbreaking MPC music-making machines so legendary. MPC Note Repeat and 16 Levels make it easy to build beats and construct short melodic sequences using the MPC-style pads. In addition, an arpeggiator, with adjustable resolution, range, and patterns, enables users to explore complex melodic ideas, effortlessly.

Production Software
MPK249 is armed with powerful production software-Ableton Live Lite and MPC Essentials-for out-of-the-box music creation. Ableton Live Lite is a fluid audio/MIDI environment that enables musicians and producers to spontaneously compose, record, remix, improvise, and edit musical ideas. MPC Essentials, a groove/beat production and sample-triggering software, can integrate directly into any DAW, such as Ableton Live Lite, or run standalone. In addition, it extends the power of MPK249 by adding up to 8 pad banks and 4 samples and insert effects per pad.

Virtual Synthesizers
Two high-definition virtual synthesizers bring the best of synthesis technology to MPK249 users. Hybrid 3, by AIR Music Tech, is a versatile virtual synthesizer that combines the warmth of legendary analog synths with a full range of futuristic, digital manipulation capabilities. SONiVOX Twist, a spectral morphing synthesis virtual instrument, makes it easy to create serious sounds using simple controls. Together, these powerful instruments give MPK249 users professional music-creation tools that can jumpstart any project.

Great Midi Controller! - Perfect Action Keyboard and Pads - So-So Quality Control

By Robert

from San Diego, CA

Comments about Akai Professional MPK249 49-Key Controller:

I ordered this and it came fast in 3 days. Pretty well packaged (double box) although the foam inserts were a bit loose. It comes with a basic USB cable and slim quick start guide. You have to download the full manual online. Ugh. But you don't need the manual right off the bat. I played with the controls to make sure everything worked as it should and discovered that some of the keyboard keys were sticking. Hmm...that's a problem. Anyway I hooked it up and this unit performs extremely well. Easy presets are included for Pro-Tools, Ableton, etc. The main thing I wanted it to do was work with the Air Ignite! Software that came with my M-Track Plus interface. It does work well. All the keys and pads work. The recording transport and sound adjustment controls work, but you have to right click them on the screen, then let go (they turn red) then play with the adjustment or button you want to control it. Then it just starts working. Ignite remembers it next time. Ignite! is an incredibly easy to use musician oriented "musical ideas" workshop. It's a free download and activates with a serial number from most M-Audio, Avid, and Akai Prof. Interfaces and Controllers. See their website... Oh yeah, about the sticky keys. So I thought about just sending it back because the keys, when pressed hard, would just stay pressed down! It felt like an adhesive strip was underneath causing them to stick. I didn't feel like hassling with all the shipping and waiting, so I decided to try and fix it myself. Do not attempt unless you have skillz. It was a surprisingly easy fix. 16 screws on the bottom (only the ones in the depressions guys) then the top just lifts off, knobs and all. Be careful of the two ribbon cables connecting the top and bottom. Gently lay the top back, upside down, and examine the Keyboard assembly. Running under the keys in front is a foam strip with adhesive on top (yup that's the culprit) and a sort of felt strip that's supposed to sit on top the adhesive. Mine was shifted off in a few different places, causing the keys to hit adhesive instead of felt. I had to remove about 16-18 of the white keys to get access to the foam/felt strip. This was easy with a little hook tool. I gently hooked and lifted off the springs in back of each key, saved them carefully, and the keys slid forward and off easily. After I re-positioned the felt strip and burnished it to keep it down, I re-assembled the keyboard and case. Total time, about 1 hour. Now I am even more connected to my Midi Controller. It's an amazing piece of hardware and solidly built. Just quality control issue, so, minus 1 star.

I really want to love this controller.

from Plano TX

Comments about Akai Professional MPK249 49-Key Controller:

This controller really is a beast, but there were a few issues I had that were a major problem for me. The first issue is that there are no lights next to the encoders (knobs) to indicate how far the knob has been turned. I realize this isn't entirely fair for me to complain about because I knew it had no lights at the time I bought it. However, without this feature, I absolutely couldn't rely on this controller for playing live (it's quite bulky to lug around anyway). The knobs on this controller are ENDLESS (360?), so in a dark playing environment, indicator lights would be perfect. The only reason I mention the lack of encoder lights is because Akai released the APC40 mkii which includes these lights. The second issue I have is with the arpeggiator and note repeat functions. The internal clock in this controller is EXTREMELY unreliable. I would love to be able to beat sync a locked arpeggio with my DAW, but it's simply not possible with this controller. The controllers clock is about a half of a bpm faster than my DAW is. You can sync the clock inside the MPK with your DAW, but unfortunately, once you do that the arpeggiator is locked. So if I decide I want each note of the arpeggio to fall on the up-beat instead of the down-beat I am out of luck. Those are my main issues. Everything else on this controller is EXCELLENT. Here are the features that I LOVE about this: 1) Everything is configurable from within the controller (no software needed). You can set the midi CC and channel that each control is sent out on individually. Each individual drum pad's CC and channel can be changed. Each individual fader, knob, and button (one button under each fader) can be configured from within the controller. THIS IS BRILLIANT. Other companies need to implement this feature. 2) The drum pads are AMAZING. They are super responsive (I was concerned about this). Each drum pad's on and off color can be changed individually. There are around 16 colors or so to choose from. This feature is superb. 3) The knobs are extremely solid. They feel more solid than maybe any other controller I have felt. I ended up returning the controller because the knobs just weren't up to par for me. I can't live without being able to use those. I wanted to absolutely love this controller, and for the most part I did. The knobs were the deal breaker for me.

Comments about Akai Professional MPK249 49-Key Controller:

I bough this unit as a upgrade from a Novation Launchkey 49. And it was a big upgrade! After 1 year since I purchased, I'm making this review.
The unit is heavier and gives me a lot more reliability. Solid! Great pads, great faders, great knobs, great keys and easy to use interface, almost everything pretty assignable. I add this cons: only 2 colors per pad and infinite knobs. It's great for live performance but not too useful for studio, as it doesn't have a good script for Ableton Live and, even when I created my own script, it doesn't fill my needs (a.k.a. doesn't supply APC or Push functions). Mine unit came with a little problem on the Power Button, easily solved with a new weld.

Comments about Akai Professional MPK249 49-Key Controller:

I've owned about six different MIDI keyboards
Started with FL switched to Abelton because of its ease of use with MIDI controllers.
I've used Alesis, M-Audio and Akai.
Akai has always stood out in over all construction quality. This is the second device I have owned and I think its safe to say I'll be sticking with them.
First off this is by a long shot the easiest MIDI to program. No glitchy software needed. The keys are light weight but feel very responsive. The pads are not overly responsive but feel great to press.
Second its not to heavy yet feels very sturdy I have zero doubts about the button quality or structural quality.
The bottom line is I have NEVER butt this happy with a MIDI keyboard purchase!
    You will not but disappointed!!!!
